The Network Code for HVDC systems introduces a requirement for such systems to remain in operation in an AC network during short-circuits. This requirement (among others) is determined by a time curve of a minimum voltage in HVDC connection point. The HVDC system is not allowed to be turned-off while the voltage value exceeds the values of the curve, however the HVDC system in LCC technology does not meet this requirement. The Network Code introduces the possibility of blocking the LCC systems. After the LCC system is blocked it stops transmitting the power, which prevents the LCC system from being turned off during a short-circuit in the network but results in a lack of power exchange between the network and the LCC system. Therefore, the authors developed a proposal to limit the power level being transmitted by the LCC system, thus there is no necessity to block the LCC system operation. The simulation research carried out clearly indicate the validity of this idea. In addition, the authors presented the concept of an automation system that adaptively adjusts the scale of the LCC system power level reduction to change the network operating conditions during a short-circuit in the network. The operation of this automation system is presented for the practical LCC system model installed in the Polish Power System.

Cross-flow microfiltration (CFMF) has potentially wide application in the processing of industrial and domestic waste waters. Optimum design and operation of CFMF systems necessitates a knowledge of the characteristic system behaviour, and an understanding of the mechanisms governing this behaviour. This paper is a contribution towards the elucidation and understanding of the behaviour of a woven fibre CFMF operated in the turbulent flow regime. The characteristic flux-time curve and effects of operating variables on flux are presented for a limestone suspension cross-flow filtered in a 25 mm woven fibre tube. The phenomena contributing to the shape of the flux-time curve are discussed. A model of the mechanisms governing cake growth and limit is presented. Predicted steady-state fluxes show a notably good correspondence with experimentally measured values. It is also found that the flux may not be uniquely defined by the operating conditions, but may also be a function of the operating path taken to reach the operating point. This is of significance in the start-up and operation of CFMF units.

Protecting inverter-interfaced microgrids is challenging as conventional time-overcurrent protection becomes unusable due to the lack of fault current. There is a great need for novel protective relaying methods that enable the application of protection coordination on microgrids, thereby allowing for microgrids with larger areas and numbers of loads while not compromising reliable power delivery. Tools for modeling and analyzing such microgrids under fault conditions are necessary in order to help design such protective relaying and operate microgrids in a configuration that can be protected, though there is currently a lack of tools applicable to inverter-interfaced microgrids. This paper introduces the concept of applying an optimization problem formulation to the topic of inverter-interfaced microgrid fault modeling, and discusses how it can be employed both for simulating short-circuits and as a set of constraints for optimal microgrid operation to ensure protective device coordination.

The rail transit system is a large electric vehicle system that is strongly dependent on the energy technologies of the power system. The use of new energy-saving amorphous alloy transformers can not only reduce the loss of rail transit power, but also help alleviate the power shortage situation and electromagnetic emissions. The application of the transformer in the field of rail transit is limited by the problem that amorphous alloy is prone to debris. this paper studied the stress conditions of amorphous alloy transformer cores under different working conditions and determined that the location where the core is prone to fragmentation, which is the key problem of smoothly integrating amorphous alloy distribution transformers on rail transit power supply systems. In this study, we investigate the changes in the electromagnetic field and stress of the amorphous alloy transformer core under different operating conditions. The finite element model of an amorphous alloy transformer is established and verified. The simulation results of the magnetic field and stress of the core under different working conditions are given. The no-load current and no-load loss are simulated and compared with the actual experimental data to verify practicability of amorphous alloy transformers. The biggest influence on the iron core is the overload state and the maximum value is higher than the core stress during short circuit. The core strain caused by the side-phase short circuit is larger than the middle-phase short circuit.

A variety of electrical apparatus used in daily life can cause fires because of internal or external factors. During cause identification of an electrical fire, the first short circuit melted marks of copper wire have been considered highly important because they are direct proofs. Additionally, overloaded short circuit caused by the overload of current due to excessive electrical usage can give rise to an electrical fire. Despite extensive research on the first short circuit in fire scenes, the overloaded short circuit remains difficult to be distinguished because of the limitation of commonly used testing methods. Conventional metallographic method is intuitionistic and simple, but may not provide detailed data of crystals such as misorientation of grains. Here a new method (electron backscattered diffraction, EBSD) is applied for identification of the first and overloaded short-circuited melted marks of copper wires in electrical fire scenes. Results show obvious morphological distinctions in melted marks of copper wires between the first and overloaded short circuits. Qualitative and Quantitative differences obtained from the contrast of the above two short circuit situations may assist for cause identification of electrical fires in the future.

This paper proposes a simple design procedure to solve the problem of controlling generator transient stability following large disturbances in power systems. A state-feedback excitation controller and power system stabilizer are designed to guarantee robustness against uncertainty in the system parameters. These controllers ensure satisfactory swing damping and quick decay of the voltage regulation error over a wide range of operating conditions. The controller performance is evaluated in a case study in which a three-phase short-circuit fault near the generator terminals in a four-bus power system is simulated.

This paper investigates the impact of parameter variation between parallel connected SiC MOSFETs on short circuit (SC) performance. SC tests are performed on parallel connected devices with different switching rates, junction temperatures and threshold voltages (VTH). The results show that VTH variation is the most critical factor affecting reduced robustness of parallel devices under SC. The SC current conducted per device is shown to increase under parallel connection compared to single device measurements. VTH shift from bias–temperature–instability (BTI) is known to occur in SiC MOSFETs, hence this paper combines BTI and SC tests. The results show that a positive VGS stress on the gate before the SC measurement reduces the peak SC current by a magnitude that is proportional to VGS stress time. Repeating the measurements at elevated temperatures reduces the time dependency of the VTH shift, thereby indicating thermal acceleration of negative charge trapping. VTH recovery is also observed using SC measurements. Similar measurements are performed on Si IGBTs with no observable impact of VGS stress on SC measurements. In conclusion, a test methodology for investigating the impact of BTI on SC characteristics is presented along with key results showing the electrothermal dynamics of parallel devices under SC conditions.

The increasing demand for electricity along with the development of distributed generators showed that improving transmission efficiency and reliability is an indispensable requirement in the operation of the power system. Advanced technologies need to be applied to modern power systems for purposes of conveying large power flows, mitigating the risk of faults. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is now considered an effective solution for investment in large-length power lines, replacing the conventional high-voltage alternative current (HVAC) transmission system, especially in period of increasing generation capacity due to the penetration of renewable energy sources. This study assesses the performance of the HVDC system on an actual power grid based on planning and improvement demands. The calculation results of power flows, power losses and short-circuit faults were investigated using ETAP software X
