Currently, permanent-magnet-type traction motors drive most electric vehicles. However, the potential demagnetization of magnets in these motors limits the performance of an electric vehicle. It is well known that during severe duty, the magnets are demagnetized if they operate beyond a ‘knee point’ in the B(H) curve. We show herein that the classic knee point definition can degrade a magnet by up to 4 grades. To prevent consequent excessive loss in performance, this paper defines the knee point k as the point of intersection of the B(H) curve and a parallel line that limits the reduction in its residual flux density to 1%. We show that operating above such a knee point will not be demagnetizing the magnets. It will also prevent a magnet from degenerating to a lower grade. The flux density at such a knee point, termed demag flux density, characterizes the onset of demagnetization. It rightly reflects the value of a magnet, so can be used as a basis to price the magnets. Including such knee points in the purchase specifications also helps avoid the penalty of getting the performance of a low-grade magnet out of a high-grade magnet. It also facilitates an accurate demagnetization analysis of traction motors in the worst-case conditions.

To coordinate the economy, security and environment protection in the power system operation, a two-step many-objective optimal power flow (MaOPF) solution method is proposed. In step 1, it is the first time that knee point-driven evolutionary algorithm (KnEA) is introduced to address the MaOPF problem, and thereby the Pareto-optimal solutions can be obtained. In step 2, an integrated decision analysis technique is utilized to provide decision makers with decision supports by combining fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering and grey relational projection (GRP) method together. In this way, the best compromise solutions (BCSs) that represent decision makers’ different, even conflicting, preferences can be automatically determined from the set of Pareto-optimal solutions. The primary contribution of the proposal is the innovative application of many-objective optimization together with decision analysis for addressing MaOPF problems. Through examining the two-step method via the IEEE 118-bus system and the real-world Hebei provincial power system, it is verified that our approach is suitable for addressing the MaOPF problem of power systems.

The influence of Al doping on the magnetic properties and magnetic entropy changes (ΔSM) of the La0.8-xAlxCe0.2Fe11.4Si1.6(x = 0-0.2) compounds have been investigated around their Curie temperature TC. The incorporation of Al atoms is unfavorable for the formation of the NaZn13-type phase, however, it increases the TCby ~40 K, effectively decreases the magnetic hysteresis loss, and broadens the ΔSM-T curve at expense of the (ΔSM)maxof the compounds. It is also revealed that Al doping content of x = 0.06 is an important composition knee point where the doped Al start to occupy the site of Rare-earth elements, leading to a turning point for the lattice constant, TC, and magnetic transition type.

The paper considers a method of geometric modeling applied when solving basic twodimensional problems of the theory of elasticity and structural mechanics, in particular the applied problems of engineering. The subject of this study is vibrations of thin elastic parallelogram plates of constant thickness. To determine a basic frequency of vibrations, the interpolation method based on the geometric characteristic of the shape of plates (membrane, cross sections of a rod) is proposed. This characteristic represents a ratio of interior and exterior conformal radii of the plate. As is known from the theory of conformal mappings, conformal radii are those obtained by mapping of a plate onto the interior and exterior of a unit disk. The paper presents basic terms, tables, and formulas related to the considered geometric method with a comparative analysis of the curve diagrams obtained using various interpolation formulas. The original computer program is also developed. The main advantage of the proposed method of determining the basic frequency of plate vibrations is a graphic representation of results that allows one to accurately determine the required solution on the graph among the other solutions corresponding to the considered case of parallelogram plates. Although there are many known approximate approaches, which are used to solve the considered problems, only geometric modeling technique based on the conformal radii ratio gives such an opportunity.

Bionics has been widely used in many fields. Previous studies on the application of bionics in locomotives and vehicles mainly focused on shape optimisation of high-speed trains, but the research on bionic shape design in the electric locomotive field is rare. This study investigated a design method for streamlined electric locomotives according to the principles of bionics. The crocodiles were chosen as the bionic object because of their powerful and streamlined head shape. Firstly, geometric characteristic lines were extracted from the head of a crocodile by analysing the head features. Secondly, according to the actual size requirements of the electric locomotive head, a free-hand sketch of the bionic electric locomotive head was completed by adjusting the position and scale of the geometric characteristic lines. Finally, the non-uniform rational B-splines method was used to establish a 3D digital model of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive, and the main and auxiliary control lines were created. To verify the drag reduction effect of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive, numerical simulations of aerodynamic drag were performed for the crocodile bionic and bluff body electric locomotives at different speeds in open air by using the CFD software, ANSYS FLUENT16.0. The geometric models of crocodile bionic and bluff body electric locomotives were both marshalled with three cars, namely, locomotive + middle car + locomotive, and the size of the two geometric models was uniform. Dimensions and grids of the flow field were defined. And then, according to the principle of motion relativity, boundary conditions of flow field were defined. The results indicated that the crocodile bionic electric locomotive demonstrated a good aerodynamic performance. At the six sampling speeds in the range of 40–240 km/h, the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the crocodile bionic electric locomotive decreased by 7.7% on the average compared with that of the bluff body electric locomotive.
