The article consideres the problems of determining the need to modernize the base stations of the cellular network based on the mathematical apparatus of the theory of fuzzy sets. To improve the quality of telecommunications services the operators should send significant funding for upgrading the equipment of base stations. Modernization can improve and extend the functions of base stations to provide cellular communication, increase the reliability of the base station in operation and the functionality of its individual elements, and reduce the cost of maintenance and repair when working on a cellular network. The complexity in collecting information about the equipment condition is determined by a large number of factors that affect its operation, as well as the imperfection of obtaining and processing the information received. For a comprehensive assessment of the need for modernization, it is necessary to take into account a number of indicators. In the structure of indicators of the need for modernization, there were introduced the parameters reflecting both the degree of aging and obsolescence(the technical gap and the backlog in connection with the emergence of new technologies and standards). In the process of a problem solving, the basic stages of decision-making on modernization have been allocated. Decision-making on the need for modernization is based not only on measuring information that takes into account the decision-makers, but also on linguistic and verbal information. Therefore, to determine the need for upgrading the base stations, the theory of fuzzy sets is used, with the help of which experts can be attracted to this issue. They will be able to formulate additional fuzzy judgments that help to take into account not only measuring characteristics, but also poorly formalized fuzzy information. To do this, the main indicators of the modernization need have been defined, and fuzzy estimates of the need for modernization for all indicators and a set of indicators reflecting the need for upgrading the base stations have been formulated.

Relying has in use for decades to tackle some of the challenges of wireless communication such as extending transmitting distance, transmitting over rough terrains. Diversity achieved through relaying is also a means to combat the random behavior of fading channels. In this work, effect of time and power allocation on relay performance is studied. The channel considered is the three-node channel with half-duplex constraint on the relay. The relaying technique assumed is decode-and-forward. Mutual information is used as the criteria to measure channel performance. There is half-duplex constraint and a total transmission power constraint on the relay source node and the relay node. A model is established to analyze the mutual information as a function of time allocation and power allocation in the case of AWGN regime. The model is extended to the Rayleigh fading scenario. In both AWGN and Rayleigh fading, results showed that the importance of relaying is more apparent when more resources are allocated to the relay. It was also shown that quality of the source to destination link has direct impact on the decision to relay or not to relay. Relatively good source to destination channel makes relaying less useful. The opposite is true for the other two links, namely the source to relay channel and the relay to destination channel. When these two channels are good, relaying becomes advantageous. When applied to cellular systems, we concluded that relaying is more beneficial to battery-operated mobile nodes than to base stations.

Fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks and beyond will be heterogeneous in nature, with a mixture of macro and micro radio cells. In this scenario where high power macro base stations (MBS) coexist with low power micro base stations (mBS), it is challenging to ensure optimal usage of radio resources to serve users with a multitude of quality of service (QoS) requirements. Typical signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR)-based user allocation protocols unfairly assign more users to the high power MBS, starving mBS. There have been many attempts in the literature to forcefully assign users to mBS with limited success. In this paper, we take a different approach using second order statistics of user data, which is a better indicator of traffic fluctuations. We propose a new algorithm for user association to the appropriate base station (BS) by utilizing the standard deviation of the overall network load. This is done through an exhaustive search of the best user equipment (UE)–BS combinations that provide a global minimum to the standard deviation. This would correspond to the optimum number of UEs assigned to every BS, either macro or micro. We have also derived new expressions for coverage probability and network energy efficiency for analytical performance evaluation. Simulation results prove the validity of our proposed methods to balance the network load, improve data rate, average energy efficiency, and coverage probability with superior performance compared with other algorithms.

Abstract The rapid growth of small cells is driving cellular network toward randomness and heterogeneity. The multi-tier heterogeneous network (HetNet) addresses the massive connectivity demands of the emerging cellular networks. Cellular networks are usually modeled by placing each tier (e.g macro, pico and relay nodes) deterministically on a grid which ignores the spatial randomness of the nodes. Several works were idealized for not capturing the interference which is a major performance bottleneck. Overcoming such limitation by realistic models is much appreciated. Multi-tier relay cellular network is studied in this paper, In particular, we consider $${\mathscr {K}}$$ K -tier transmission modeled by factorial moment and stochastic geometry and compare it with a single-tier, traditional grid model and multi-antenna ultra-dense network (UDN) model to obtain tractable rate coverage and coverage probability. The locations of the relays, base stations, and users nodes are modeled as a Poisson Point Process. The results showed that the proposed model outperforms the traditional multi-antenna UDN model and its accuracy is confirmed to be similar to the traditional grid model. The obtained results from the proposed and comparable models demonstrate the effectiveness and analytical tractability to study the HetNet performance.

This paper analyzes the cell edge mobile user performance in the downlink cellular system. We develop frame-work for coverage probability and spectral efficiency. In particular, we analyzed the performance of multi-antenna mobile users under multi-antenna base stations (BSs). The expressions of coverage probability and spectral efficiency are derived for cell edge user using stochastic geometry. We investigate how much the performance of cell edge user is improved when distances connecting BSs and cell edge users are modeled with cell edge null probability distribution. The probability of coverage and spectral efficiency is studied using zero-forcing beam-forming and the performance metrics are compared between coordinated scheduling (CS) and without coordinated scheduling (w/o CS). The interesting observation from our results is that the edge user coverage and rate is closely approaching towards the inner cell typical mobile user's rate and coverage, and the performance is verified with relative probability of coverage gain analysis.
