As wireless local area networks grow in size to provide access to users, power consumption becomes an important issue. Power savings in a large-scale Wi-Fi network, with low impact to user service, is undoubtedly desired. In this work, we propose and evaluate the eSCIFI energy saving mechanism for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). eSCIFI is an energy saving mechanism that uses machine learning algorithms as occupancy demand estimators. The eSCIFI mechanism is designed to cope with a broader range of WLANs, which includes Wi-Fi networks such as the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) SCIFI network. The eSCIFI can cope with WLANs that cannot acquire data in a real time manner and/or possess a limited CPU power. The eSCIFI design also includes two clustering algorithms, named cSCIFI and cSCIFI+, that help to guarantee the network’s coverage. eSCIFI uses those network clusters and machine learning predictions as input features to an energy state decision algorithm that then decides which Access Points (AP) can be switched off during the day. To evaluate eSCIFI performance, we conducted several trace-driven simulations comparing the eSCIFI mechanism using both clustering algorithms with other energy saving mechanisms found in the literature using the UFF SCIFI network traces. The results showed that eSCIFI mechanism using the cSCIFI+ clustering algorithm achieves the best performance and that it can save up to 64.32% of the UFF SCIFI network energy without affecting the user coverage.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be deployed as backup aerial base stations due to cellular outage either during or post natural disaster. In this paper, an approach involving multi-UAV three-dimensional (3D) deployment with power-efficient planning was proposed with the objective of minimizing the number of UAVs used to provide wireless coverage to all outdoor and indoor users that minimizes the required UAV transmit power and satisfies users’ required data rate. More specifically, the proposed algorithm iteratively invoked a clustering algorithm and an efficient UAV 3D placement algorithm, which aimed for maximum wireless coverage using the minimum number of UAVs while minimizing the required UAV transmit power. Two scenarios where users are uniformly and non-uniformly distributed were considered. The proposed algorithm that employed a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-based clustering algorithm resulted in a lower number of UAVs needed to serve all users compared with that when a K-means clustering algorithm was employed. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm that iteratively invoked a PSO-based clustering algorithm and PSO-based efficient UAV 3D placement algorithms reduced the execution time by a factor of ≈1/17 and ≈1/79, respectively, compared to that when the Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based and Artificial Bees Colony (ABC)-based efficient UAV 3D placement algorithms were employed. For the uniform distribution scenario, it was observed that the proposed algorithm required six UAVs to ensure 100% user coverage, whilst the benchmarker algorithm that utilized Circle Packing Theory (CPT) required five UAVs but at the expense of 67% of coverage density.

In a round-trip carsharing system, stations must be located in such a way that allow for maximum user coverage with the least walking distance as well as offer certain degrees of flexibility for returning. Therefore, a balance must be stricken between these factors. Providing a satisfactory system can be translated into an optimization problem and belongs to an NP-hard class. In this article, a novel optimization model for the round-trip carsharing fleet placement problem, called Fleet Placement Problem (FPP), is proposed. The optimization in this work is multiobjective and its NP-hard nature is proven. Three different optimization algorithms: PolySCIP (exact method), heuristics, and NSGA-II (metaheuristic) are investigated. This work adopts three real instances for the study, instead of their abstracts where they are most commonly used. They are two instance:, in the city of Luxembourg (smaller and larger) and a much larger instance in the city of Munich. Results from each algorithm are validated and compared with solution from human experts. Superiority of the proposed FPP model over the traditional methods is also demonstrated.

Purpose Because of the extensive user coverage of news sites and apps, greater social and commercial value can be realized if users can access their favourite news as easily as possible. However, news has a timeliness factor; there are serious cold start and data sparsity in news recommendation, and news users are more susceptible to recent topical news. Therefore, this study aims to propose a personalized news recommendation approach based on topic model and restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM). Design/methodology/approach Firstly, the model extracts the news topic information based on the LDA2vec topic model. Then, the implicit behaviour data are analysed and converted into explicit rating data according to the rules. The highest weight is assigned to recent hot news stories. Finally, the topic information and the rating data are regarded as the conditional layer and visual layer of the conditional RBM (CRBM) model, respectively, to implement news recommendations. Findings The experimental results show that using LDA2vec-based news topic as a conditional layer in the CRBM model provides a higher prediction rating and improves the effectiveness of news recommendations. Originality/value This study proposes a personalized news recommendation approach based on an improved CRBM. Topic model is applied to news topic extraction and used as the conditional layer of the CRBM. It not only alleviates the sparseness of rating data to improve the efficient in CRBM but also considers that readers are more susceptible to popular or trending news.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication can be used in overcrowded areas and either during or postdisaster situations as an evolving technology to provide ubiquitous connections for wireless devices due to its flexibility, mobility, and good condition of the line of sight channels. In this paper, a single UAV is used as an aerial relay node to provide connectivity to wireless devices because of the considerable distance between wireless devices and the ground base station. Specifically, two path loss models have been utilized; a cellular-to-UAV path loss for a backhaul connection and an air-to-ground path loss model for a downlink connection scenario. Then, the tradeoff introduced by these models is discussed. The problem of efficient placement of an aerial relay node is formulated as an optimization problem, where the objective is to maximize the total throughput of wireless devices. To find an appropriate location for a relay aerial node that maximizes the overall throughput, we first use the particle swarm optimization algorithm to find the drone location; then, we use three different approaches, namely, (1) the equal power allocation approach, (2) water filling approach, and (3) modified water filling approach to maximize the total users’ throughput. The results show that the modified water filling outperforms the other two approaches in terms of the average sum rate of all users and the total number of served users. More specifically, in the best-case scenario, it was observed that the average sum rate of the modified water filling is better than the equal power allocation and ensuring 100% coverage. In contrast, the water filling provides a very close average sum rate to the modified water filling, but it only provides a 28% user coverage.

AbstractThis work analyses the performance of Reinforcement Learning (RL) versus Swarm Intelligence (SI) for coordinating multiple unmanned High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) for communications area coverage. It builds upon previous work which looked at various elements of both algorithms. The main aim of this paper is to address the continuous state-space challenge within this work by using partitioning to manage the high dimensionality problem. This enabled comparing the performance of the classical cases of both RL and SI establishing a baseline for future comparisons of improved versions. From previous work, SI was observed to perform better across various key performance indicators. However, after tuning parameters and empirically choosing suitable partitioning ratio for the RL state space, it was observed that the SI algorithm still maintained superior coordination capability by achieving higher mean overall user coverage (about 20% better than the RL algorithm), in addition to faster convergence rates. Though the RL technique showed better average peak user coverage, the unpredictable coverage dip was a key weakness, making SI a more suitable algorithm within the context of this work.

Abstract Advancement in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technology supervised us to use them in many situations like seismic survey of an area, border and restricted area surveillance, disaster rescue, agriculture monitoring, and many others. The deployment of UAVs for expansion and extension of wireless network coverage for surveillance and rescue during and post disaster situations is fenced with promising challenges. The dense user coverage, quality of service (QoS), user data rate requirement, limited short flying time, and optimal trajectory path are some of the pertinent issues that UAVs are encountering. In this work we develop some algorithms for fast deployment of UAVs for application in disaster scenarios and optimal trajectory of each UAV in some specified area. The main aim of the work is to reduce the time complexity for optimal deployment of UAVs in order to optimize diverse parametric constraints. We propose a highly time efficient algorithm for UAV deployment through Lloyd and FCM as the initial localization of position in conjunction with the evolutionary algorithm namely Differential Evolution (DE) and Hybrid Differential Evolution with Learning (HDEL) for finding the optimal location of UAVs. We also develop an algorithm for finding out the optimal trajectory to reach the intended location for effective deployment of UAVs to ensure optimal resource allocation and user coverage. Comprehensive simulation of various performance measuring metrics is obtained and the result shows that the proposed algorithms are well efficient as compared to some of the standard algorithms used in deployment of UAVs.

The paper provides general information on the architecture of the new generation National Research Computer Network (NIKS), operated and developed by JSCC RAS on the assignment of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation as an administrator and operator since 2019. The key functions and directions of functioning of NIKS today and in the short term development, some urgent tasks of the sphere of science and education of the country, requiring the engaging of the existing infrastructure and service capabilities of the network, as well as its progressive comprehensive modernization. Information is provided on the current state of NIKS with the geographical and target user coverage within the country, the groundwork formed and the potential expansion of areas of international cooperation with foreign national research and education networks and network consortia in the interests of the sphere of science and education of Russia. The opportunities provided by NIKS for improvement of a Common digital space of scientific knowledge, increasing the level of accessibility, information security and network protection of its resources and services are denoted. Individual specialized scientific services, information technology services and services for collective use functioning on the basis of the NIKS infrastructure, built, including on promising and massively exploited technologies of federated authentication and developed in cooperation with the global research and education community are presented.

Background Several countries have released digital proximity tracing (DPT) apps to complement manual contact tracing for combatting the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. DPT aims to notify app users about proximity exposures to persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 so that they can self-quarantine. The success of DPT apps depends on user acceptance and the embedding of DPT into the pandemic mitigation strategy. Objective By searching for media articles published during the first 3 months after DPT launch, the implementation of DPT in Switzerland was evaluated to inform similar undertakings in other countries. The second aim of the study was to create a link between reported DPT implementation challenges and normalization process theory for planning and optimizing complex digital health interventions, which can provide useful guidance for decision-making in DPT design and implementation. Methods A Swiss media database was searched for articles on the Swiss DPT app (SwissCovid) published in German or French between July 4 and October 3, 2020. In a structured process, topics were extracted and clustered manually from articles that were deemed pertinent. Extracted topics were mapped to four NPT constructs, which reflected the flow of intervention development from planning, stakeholder onboarding, and execution to critical appraisal. Coherence constructs describe sense-making by stakeholders, cognitive participation constructs reflect participants’ efforts to create engagement with the intervention, collective actions refer to intervention execution and joint stakeholder efforts to make the intervention work, and reflexive monitoring refers to collective risk-benefit appraisals to create improvements. Results Out of 94 articles deemed pertinent and selected for closer inspection, 38 provided unique information on implementation challenges. Five challenge areas were identified: communication challenges, challenges for DPT to interface with other processes, fear of resource competition with established pandemic mitigation measures, unclear DPT effectiveness, and obstacles to greater user coverage and compliance. Specifically, several articles mentioned unclear DPT benefits to affect commitment and to raise fears among different health system actors regarding resource competition. Moreover, media reports indicated process interface challenges such as delays or unclear responsibilities in the notification cascade, as well as misunderstandings and unmet communication needs from health system actors. Finally, reports suggested misaligned incentives, not only for app usage by the public but also for process engagement by other actors in the app notification cascade. NPT provided a well-fitting framework to contextualize the different DPT implementation challenges and to highlight improvement strategies, namely a better alignment of stakeholder incentives, or stakeholder-specific communication to address their concerns about DPT. Conclusions Early experiences from one of the first adopters of DPT indicate that nontechnical implementation challenges may affect the effectiveness of DPT. The NPT analysis provides a novel perspective on DPT implementation and stresses the need for stakeholder inclusion in development and operationalization.
