Nurse managers’ workload is considered overwhelming and the resources and support insufficient. Stress from workload has adverse psychological and physical effects and impedes strategic, visible and active leadership. This study aimed to examine nurse managers’ stress from workload and its associations to overall job stress, job satisfaction and practice environment. A survey comprising the Nursing Context Index was administered to 490 nurse managers in Finnish central hospitals. The study was reported using the STROBE statement. The response rate was 42.7% ( n = 209). A statistical analysis revealed that almost every fifth nurse manager experienced high stress from workload with connection to higher job stress overall, higher intent to leave the organization, lower job satisfaction overall, personally and professionally, as well as a more negative perception of the practice environment. Nurse managers’ jobs require adequate resources, clear division of work and better empowering structures.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to describe council structure, its benefits, supportive and obstructive factors and developmental needs as a part of shared governance in a university hospital. Design/methodology/approach This is a descriptive study, where semi-structured interviews with 12 nurses was conducted in 2014 and documents from 75 council meetings from 2009 to 2014 were gathered and analyzed. Qualitative content analysis method was used on the data. Findings The study hospital has been developing nursing shared governance with unique structure and processes of councils. Professors and university researchers act as chair and members are voluntary nursing staff. The factors supporting the councils are nurse managers’ support, enthusiastic personnel and neighboring university. The factors obstructing the councils are lack of time, understanding and skills. The work of the councils benefits the organization by improving patient care, harmonizing nursing practices and informing decision-making. The council’s developmental needs were more visibility, concentration into everyday problems and interprofessionality. Research limitations/implications Applying nursing shared governance structures into an organization improves the professional practice environment of nursing personnel. Practical implications The study hospital has its own, unique council structure. It did not cover the whole hospital or all of the nursing personnel, but it is already producing promising results. It should be given an official status and more support from nurse managers, and it should be developed into an inter-professional discussion. The results presented here indicate that shared governance, even, in its early stage, contributes positively to the quality of care, harmonizes nursing practices and informs decision-making. Applying shared governance structures into an organization improves the professional practice environment of nursing personnel. The study showed concrete supporting and obstructing factors that should be notified in nursing leadership. Originality/value Despite the extensive empirical studies on nursing shared governance, there is very little research on councils in the Scandinavian countries.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the studies that approach bullying in the nursing practice environment. Method: Integrative review, conducted between April and December 2018, by combining the descriptors "bullying/bullying" AND "nursing/nursing/nurse" AND "workplace/workplace". We identified 224 studies of which 38 met the inclusion criteria. Results: The studies on nursing bullying presented three main approaches related to the prevalence in nursing practice, the repercussions for health and professional development, and the construction of theoretical models for bullying and nursing work environment variables. Conclusion: Bullying is a negative behavior present in the nursing practice environment and has a direct impact on professional performance, impairing general health and professional performance. Despite being a behavior with recognized negative potential in the work environment, few studies propose effective actions to prevent or control this phenomenon in health institutions.

Based on calculations of data and analysis used, the regression equation is obtained: Y = 11.733 + 0.320 X1 +0.334 X2 + ε, by using the equation regression analytical method can conclude that (X1) take effect positively against employees performance. With t value in amount of 2,219 (bigger than t in table in amount of 1,690) and significance value in amount of 0,33. By applying significance limited value in amount of 0,05, it means, hypothesis that claim if work motivation take effect against employees performance can be accepted. There is a positive and significant correlation between work environment variables (X2) against employees. With t value in amount of 2,219 (bigger than t in table in amount of 1,690) and significance value in amount of 0,33 (smaller than 0,5). Simultaneously, work motivation take effect positively and significantly against employees performance with the F value in amount of 11,562 (bigger than 0.05), then obtained significance value 0.000.
