Abstract Background The theoretical knowledge of nursing underpins the practice, while the practice environment determines the circumstances within which the theoretical knowledge is applied. The biggest challenge facing nursing as an academic field is the theory-practice gap, which is a universal issue in nursing. This study aimed to raise solutions to close the gap between theory and practice in nursing education through the eyes of nursing students in UAE. Methods A qualitative descriptive approach was followed; whereby 25 Emirati nursing students were interviewed. Results Two main themes are discussed in this study: ‘Clinical Culture Creation’ and ‘Curriculum Content Reformation’. The students suggested to decreased the loud and stress on their clinical educators. They also suggested creating synchronization between what is taught in classrooms and labs and what is offered in the clinical training. Moreover, some of the students expected to have more benefit if they get their clinical training in health institutions owned by their college. On the other side, many of the participants suggested to move from the integration system to the block system. Another interesting suggestion includes having the same college staff to teach the theory and the clinical. The final suggestion includes decreasing the paper work during clinical training. Conclusions This study explored the solutions to bridge the theory-practice gap in nursing education in the UAE. The study has implications for nursing education and practice within the UAE and is imperative for graduating workplace ready professional nurses within the country.

This paper conducts an in-depth study on the catering recommendation space based on different situations. By consulting the literature, visiting relevant experts, condensing the theoretical knowledge of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) constitutional dietotherapy theory, it has extracted some key factors that can be effectively utilized in catering theory. The variable framework of the situational catering recommendation system is preliminarily constructed. Also, it has designed a mixed catering recommendation space that combines TCM Constitutional Theory and user situation, which not only meets individual preferences but also improves the users’ sub-health status. Finally, through the questionnaire survey, the importance of each attribute in the eyes of consumers has been recognized; then this essay provides a guidance for the recommendation ranking method in the design of the catering recommendation system after making the cross-analysis.

Background: Incivility is the display of intimidating, rude, disruptive or undesirable behaviours. Incivility in nursing has the potential to impact on the learning environment, student wellbeing and patient outcomes. Although it is a globally recognised phenomenon, relatively little is known about it in the context of nurse education in the United Kingdom, where the students’ time is divided equally between theory and practice and a nurse mentor is allocated to each student when on clinical placement. Methods: A phenomenological qualitative design was used to explore the experiences of ten student nurses studying on a three year degree level pre-registration (pre-licensure) nursing programme. Data was collected by in-depth, semi-structured, face-to-face interviews which were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was conducted using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis as a framework. Results: Student nurses can experience incivility in both classroom and clinical settings with negative consequences in terms of learning and personal wellbeing. Four superordinate (main) themes (Knowing-Not Knowing/Positioning/The Invisible Student/Distraction) were identified along with a further fifteen subordinate themes which included misuse, being nameless and feeling a burden. Conclusions: These findings add further to our understanding of incivility in nursing education and specifically the potential for incivility to impact on learning and students’ emotional wellbeing. Incivilities related to ‘the Invisible Student’ and ‘Knowing-Not Knowing’ are particularly worthy of further exploration as they reveal a hitherto unappreciated dimension of this complex, globally recognised phenomena.

There appears to be a continuing and inconclusive debate amongst scholars whether theoretical knowledge or practical experience is more important in related and associated areas such as education, recruitment and employability. This research, limited to a literature review and face to face interviews, conducted a systematic investigation to obtain and analyze valid and reliable research data to establish whether theoretical knowledge or practical experience are of paramount importance. The outcome of this research suggests that a hybrid approach should be adopted, with the major focus being on practical experience supported by relevant theoretical knowledge and not the converse. A number of additional recommendations are presented how to balance and close the gap between theory and practice including a redesign of ordinary and advanced level educational teaching. Far greater emphasis needs to be placed on young people gaining early practical experience inside and outside the classroom. This can be achieved by developing practical workshops (pilot studies) for use in safe laboratory-type environments and by extending work placements within organizations during term times.

From the East Asian social and cultural perspectives and contexts, this study aimed to understand the relationships and behaviors between nursing students’ sense of filial piety and their decision-making behind selecting nursing education as their major. Forty-two traditional-age nursing students (i.e., six men and 36 women) at their final year of a bachelor’s degree program in nursing were invited. The findings indicated that many nursing students disliked their university major and the potential career pathway as a nursing professional, as none of them selected the major based on their choice and interest. The environmental context and family’s recommendations were the major impacts to influence the decision-making process of the participants. The result also indicated that filial piety, parents’ recommendations, and elderly people’s suggestions were the key factors to influence the selections and decisions of university major and career development pathways. The study provided a blueprint for related staff and professionals to create and design career counselling and services for East Asian youths to enable life investment and development.

Do teams with motivation to learn actually engage in the behaviors that produce learning? Though team learning orientation has been found to be positively related to team learning, we know little about how and when it actually fosters team learning. It is obviously not the only factor that may impact learning in teams. Team psychological safety, or the way team members feel about taking interpersonal risks, is another important factor associated with team learning. Team open-mindedness, or the degree of curiosity that teams have for new ideas, is also likely to impact team learning. So far, these factors have been investigated independently of each other. In this article, we draw from theory on team development and goal achievement to develop a model of team learning that includes them. We report the results from a time-lagged, survey-based study designed to test our model. We found that the relationship between team learning orientation and team learning is mediated by team psychological safety. Yet, this is only true when team open-mindedness is low, not when it is high. We thus reveal initial patterns of interaction and discrimination among key factors that are related to team learning in ways that contribute to both theory and practice.

In the teaching process of Urban and Rural Planning, students not just need to learn relevant theoretical knowledge, but also should flexibly apply relevant theoretical knowledge to practice urban and rural planning. Virtual simulation technology can construct the teaching situation which organically combines theory and practice for the course of Urban and Rural Planning, help students deepen the understanding of theoretical knowledge and enhance theoretical knowledge application and practice ability so as to make up for the defects in Urban and Rural Planning teaching. Thus, virtual simulation technology was integrated in Urban and Rural Planning teaching to form the complete teaching mode in this paper. Practical teaching application shows the teaching mode has good effect on improving students’ theoretical knowledge study and practical ability.

At present, there is a big gap between education level of Chinese universities and that of North American universities, especially compare with US universities. The paper studied the key factors for the success of North American university education according the authors experience and analyzed the problems existing in Chinese university education. Taking the curriculum of Data Structure as an example, the paper developed a teaching reform scheme focusing on cultivating students abilities. Two years practical teaching results showed that the teaching reforms proposed in this paper can stimulated the students initiative to learn. The students were able to apply the theoretical knowledge to solve the practical problems. Accordingly teaching efficiency has been improved significantly.
