The goal of this work is to describe pre- and in-service science teacher education and science education research in Indonesia in an effort to better inform the global science education community about historical developments and present challenges. We begin by providing an historical overview of the general education system to provide readers with context needed to understand current reform initiatives. Next we describe the current-day process for preparing and certifying science teachers and we describe some of the challenges facing teachers, students, and researchers in Indonesia’s science education context today. We follow this discussion with an introduction to some existing professional organizations for teachers and researchers in Indonesia that are working to develop important channels for disseminating current research on teacher practice, curriculum innovation, and student learning that have the potential to positively influence on teaching and learning in the future. We conclude by highlighting some areas that would benefit from additional research and by inviting more international collaborative research initiatives with colleagues in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Achievements in the sphere of automatization and telecommunication are an essential component of transformation of the international peace and security system. This article presents, that consequences of changes are of a dual character. On the one hand, new technologies are becoming an important component of society modernization strategies in developing countries, on the other hand, they can be used for armament modernization or creation of new means of confrontation in modern international relations. APR countries face the most relevant issue of information technologies usage. The article deals with the process of discussion of new challenges and threats to international security, emerging as a result of development and large-scale implementation of information-communication technologies. Positions of states regarding the adoption of resolution in the sphere of international information security were studied through examples of Japan, India, and China. It is proved in the article, that information technologies have become an important component of the security system in the world. Technologies usage may lead to steady international development as well as to information arms race. That is why working out a common position on international information security issues is of crucial importance. It is within the framework of the UN, that different states of the world are given an opportunity to express their visions of the problem of international information security and work out common approaches to its solution. The article shows, that states’ positions have similar as well as different features. For instance, all states express concern regarding possible limitation of technology transfer for the establishment of a more controlled international political environment. But states’ positions have major differences as to mechanisms of information security provision. Thus, Japan and India strive to achieve a balanced system of international information security, which should at the same time have preventive mechanisms against the emergence of threats in the information and science and technology spheres and guarantee continuation of scientific-technological development, which is a crucial component of development and modernization strategies in many countries of the world. China came forward with position of strong regulation of international information security issues and suggested framing of corresponding regulations of the states’ conduct in the cyberspace.

This article sets out to look critically at the use of systematic reviews in the cross-disciplinary field of early childhood and international development. Systematic reviews – a specialist methodology involving the secondary analysis of existing knowledge on a particular topic – is prevalently used to address complex questions in social and health-related policy and is an established tradition in the life and health sciences. In education and the social sciences, there is burgeoning interest in systematic methodological approaches, although its usage remains comparatively lagging compared to the medical field. Drawing on an interdisciplinary systematic review of empirical research on early childhood development and peacebuilding in the Asia Pacific region, this article reflects on the use of the methodology and its potential to inform new conceptual and methodological developments. The article argues that our knowledge of children and the early years can be significantly advanced by furthering debates on systematic reviews particularly in cross-disciplinary fields and its application, as well as relevance for how evidence is evaluated and applied. This is especially pertinent in a sector driven by increasing calls for more reliable and timely information to influence practice and policy decision-making.

Although extant reconstruction of the limits of international development practice has been implicated in the budding involvement of China in Africa, debates on China's actual intents and prospects have continued to rage. Engaging an exploratory design and a political-ecology approach, which affirms the significance of human factors in contextualising, structuring, and contesting the natural world, this study assesses specific short-term and long-term outcomes of China's Gansu-modelled water conservation project in Kano, Nigeria. The shared ecological interface between China and Nigeria has facilitated transfer of relevant technology to the Guinea and Sahel regions in Northern Nigeria. Chinese involvement in the Nigerian water/agricultural sector has resulted in improved indigenous farmers’ skills, yields, and incomes. Sustaining the trend of ongoing intervention would imply a significant boost to Nigeria's drive towards self-reliance, though a long-term cleavage towards such Chinese interventions might eventually imply neo-dependency.
