Abstract Background/Introduction Elevated resting heart rate (RHR) is a known risk factor for HF. Whether elevated RHR is also associated with cardiomyopathy (CM), a common cause of heart failure in the young, is unknown. Purpose To investigate the association of resting heart rate (RHR) measured in late adolescence with long term risk of various subtypes of CM with special attention to cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), an important predictor of RHR and myocardial dysfunction. Methods We followed a cohort of Swedish men enrolled for conscription in 1968–2005 (n=1,008,485; mean age=18.3 years) until December 2014. Outcomes of CM were collected from the national inpatient- (IPR), outpatient- (OPR) and cause of death registries and were divided into categories: 1) dilated, 2) hypertrophic, 3) alcohol/drug-induced, and 4) other. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the longitudinal association between RHR and outcomes while adjusting for potential confounders, including body mass index (BMI), arterial blood pressure and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). CRF was measured by maximum capacity ergometer testing as part of the enlistment protocol. Results During a mean follow up of 34 years, there were 3500 cases of a first hospitalization for CM (mean age at diagnosis, 50.1 years). Comparing the highest with the lowest quintile of the RHR distribution, we found a positive association between RHR and dilated CM (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.58 [confidence interval (CI) = 1.37–1.82]) after adjustment for BMI, age at conscription, conscription year, test center, and baseline comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, congenital heart disease). There no significant association with alcohol/drug-induced (HR=1.32 [CI=0.94–1.85]) or other categories of CM. Conclusion Adolescent RHR is associated with future risk CM, independently of blood pressure, BMI and CRF. The association was driven by dilated CM. These findings are suggestive of a causal pathway between elevated heart rate and adverse cardiac remodeling that warrants further investigation. AbstractBackgroundLow resting heart rate (RHR) is a consistent biological correlate of antisocial behaviour (ASB), however potential mechanisms have been largely unexplored. We hypothesise that lower RHR will be associated with higher ASB levels in mid-adolescence and persistence into adulthood, and that these associations will be explained, in part, by sensation seeking and callous-unemotional traits.MethodsASB was assessed repeatedly with young people from ages 15 to 21 years in a population-based birth cohort (ALSPAC). A longitudinal trajectory was derived and showed ASB decreasing across adolescence before stabilising in early adulthood. RHR was recorded at age 12 years, and mediators were assessed at age 14 years.ResultsAfter adjusting for socio-demographic confounders, there was evidence for a total effect of RHR on ASB levels in mid-adolescence [b(95% CI) = −0.08 (−0.14 to −0.02)], reflecting 0.08 more types of antisocial activity in the last year per 10 fewer heart beats per minute. This effect was almost entirely explained through sensation seeking [b(95% CI) = −0.06 (−0.08 to −0.04)]. After additionally adjusting for child and parent-related confounders, all effects weakened; however, there was still evidence of an indirect effect of RHR, via sensation seeking, on ASB levels in mid-adolescence [b(95% CI) = −0.01 (−0.03 to −0.003)]. There was no evidence for a total effect of RHR on ASB levels in early adulthood, and weak evidence of an indirect effect, via sensation seeking [b(95% CI) = −0.01 (−0.01 to −0.00)].ConclusionsLower RHR in childhood was associated with higher ASB levels in mid-adolescence, indirectly via sensation seeking.

Adolescent girls have always been a relevant presence in the juvenile justice system but have received limited attention from researchers. In response to the dearth of studies on female juvenile offenders, federal study groups and reviewers have called for more research to advance our understanding of the risk factors for antisocial behavior among adolescent girls. To date, however, much of the research on antisocial behavior in adolescent girls has had relatively serious methodological limitations, including relying on correlational or cross-sectional designs and focusing on a limited range of risk factors (e.g., family or school). The current study addressed these limitations by longitudinally examining how risks assessed in early adolescence across multiple domains of youths' social ecology (i.e., individual, family, peer, school, and neighborhood) predicted antisocial behaviors in late adolescence and early adulthood for both females and males. A representative national sample of 1,033 youths and their caregivers completed structured interviews that assessed risk factors in early adolescence, and these risk factors were used to predict subsequent antisocial behaviors. Results of path analyses indicated that peer relationship variables and low levels of academic commitment were most predictive of male antisocial behavior in late adolescence, while physical abuse and age were most predictive of female antisocial behavior in late adolescence. However, most of these same variables no longer predicated antisocial behavior in early adulthood. Overall, the findings suggest that treatments for antisocial behavior should be flexible enough to target the risks that are most salient for male and female youths.

Abstract. We hypothesized that in healthy subjects differences in resting heart rate variability (rHRV) would be associated with differences in emotional reactivity within the medial visceromotor network (MVN). We also probed whether this MVN-rHRV relationship was diminished in depression. Eleven healthy adults and nine depressed subjects performed the emotional counting stroop task in alternating blocks of emotion and neutral words during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The correlation between rHRV outside the scanner and BOLD signal reactivity (absolute value of change between adjacent blocks in the BOLD signal) was examined in specific MVN regions. Significant negative correlations were observed between rHRV and average BOLD shift magnitude (BSM) in several MVN regions in healthy subjects but not depressed subjects. This preliminary report provides novel evidence relating emotional reactivity in MVN regions to rHRV. It also provides preliminary suggestive evidence that depression may involve reduced interaction between the MVN and cardiac vagal control.
