Glycyrrhiza glabra alcoholic root extract ameliorates hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and glycation‐induced free iron‐mediated oxidative reactions

 Objective: The present study attempts to estimate the total flavonoid and phenolic content and to evaluate the free radical scavenging activity of the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra Leguminosae family.Methods: The various extracts, namely, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, aqueous, and methanol of G. glabra root were evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl radicals, superoxide, 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), and non-radicals such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) and assays. Total flavonoid and phenol contents were estimated as per the standard procedure.Results: The effect of the methanolic extract of G. glabra root was found to be more in scavenging the free radicals such as DPPH, hydroxyl, H2O2, superoxide, NO, and ABTS when compared to other extracts. The presence of flavonoids and phenol in the plant is responsible for the free radical scavenging effects.Conclusion: This in vitro assessment of the antioxidant properties of the various extracts of G. glabra roots validates and confirms its free-radical scavenging activity. Thus, the present data suggest that the G. glabra root extract can be used as a good source of natural antioxidants for health benefits.

The high number of poisoning food and diarrheal diseases caused by Bacillus cereus bacteria has been treated with chemical drugs and traditionally herbal plants. One of the commonly used herbal plants is sweet root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.). This study aims to extract and fractionate sweet root plants, determine the antibacterial activity and identify the types of bioactive compounds as antibacterial compounds. The extraction process uses a maceration technique and fractionation using buthanol, ethyl acetate, and hexan solvents. Antibacterial activity was carry out by the diffusion method and identification of bioactive compounds by GCMS analysis. This study showed that greatest antibacterial activity was found in ethyl acetate fraction with a strong category and MIC value of 12,5%. This study for the first time also revealed that the types of bioactive compounds from sweet root plants (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) as antibacterial compounds are n-Hexadecanoic as a fatty acid group and 4H-Pyran 4-one 2.3 dihydro-3, 5-dihydroxy-6 methyl from the flavonoid group.

An ultrasound-assisted extraction and chromolithic LC method was developed for simultaneous determination of glycyrrhizic acid (GA) and glycyrrhetinic acid (GL) from the root extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra using RPLC-PDA. The developed method was validated according to the International Conference on Harmonisation. The method exhibited good linearity (r2 >0.9989) with high precision and achieved good accuracies between 97.5 to 101.3% of quantitative results. The method is more sensitive and faster (resolved within ten minutes) than the earlier developed methods using normal LC columns.
