This article presents the discussion on challenges, triumphs, and contradictions that were on display at Critical Thinking, Critical Choices: What Really Matters in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The forum focused on middle school, where students become teenagers and develop many of the interests and attitudes that will guide their life choices. This makes middle school a critical time for STEM educators. Critical Thinking, Critical Choices is part of the ASME Decision Point Dialogues thought leadership program, where leaders debate the complexities underlying an issue by focusing on the decisions people must make in real life. Unlike typical conference sessions, the panellists’ opinions were challenged by other panellists and the moderator, Peabody and Emmy Award-winning journalist John Hockenberry. The conversation ranged from how to serve disadvantaged communities and the role of testing versus project-based learning to the contentious Common Core and Next-Generation Science Standards.

This research is to investigate the students` critical thinking skill by using STEM education through Project Based Learning. The study applied descriptive research design. In these lessons, the participants were 160 first grade Japanese middle school students from four classes. They were divided into nine groups each class. The instruments are worksheets to explore students’ initial knowledge about how to clean up wastewater and critical thinking processes. The worksheet consists of the designing solution, and understanding of concepts to identify critical thinking based on purpose and question, selection of information, assumption, and point of view the solution, and implication. Students were asked to design tools to clean up the wastewater. Students were given more than one chance to design the best product for wastewater treatment. The lessons consist of six lessons. The first lesson is the introduction of colloid, solution, and suspension, and discussion about wastewater. The second lesson to the fourth lesson was finding solutions and designing products. The fifth lesson was to watch a video of wastewater treatments in Japan and to optimize the solutions or products. The last lesson was to make a conclusion, to exchange presentations, and to develop discussion. Implementation of STEM education can be seen from the students` solutions, some students used biology or chemistry or physics or combination concept and Mathematics to design solution (technology) for treatment of wastewater. The result showed that the mean score of students` critical thinking skill was 2.82. The students` critical thinking skill was categorized as advanced thinker: 41.6%, practicing thinker: 30,6%, beginning thinker: 25%, and challenged thinker: 2.8%.  And the category for students` critical thinking was practicing thinker.  Practicing thinker is a stage of critical thinking development, they have enough skill in thinking to critique their own plan for systematic practice, and to construct a realistic critique of their powers of thought to solve the contextual problem.

Higher education institutions play an important role in the transition processes to sustainable development through developing critical thinking (CT) in their students. The case of the Research Methodology course of the International Cooperation Master’s degree at the Universitat Politècnica de València is a paradigmatic case of experiential learning, where students face their own realities related to sustainable topics through an action research project with the Agroecological Market (AM). The learning methodology is project-based learning and helps the participants to deeply analyze problems related to the transition of socio-technical systems, such as sustainable food. The objective of this research was to analyze the contribution of project-based learning to students’ critical thinking through a qualitative analysis of the pedagogical outputs obtained during the course. The analysis and results are structured in three dimensions of critical thinking: (i) students’ critical attitude towards reality; (ii) students’ ability to reason and analyze in order to form their own rigorous judgments; and (iii) students’ capacity to construct and deconstruct their own experiences and meanings. The results show that project-based learning using a real-life scenario helped students reflect on their critical thinking and the challenges that our societies face for a transition to sustainability.

This research is to describe the implementation of Project-based Learning by using the media of wall magazine as the students’ project in teaching English to the students of STIE AAS Surakarta.  This study is descriptive qualitative research. From the result of this research, there are some steps in implementing project-based learning, they are 1) Setting the stage for students with real-life samples of the projects they will be doing. 2) Taking on the role of project designers, possibly establishing a forum for display or competition. 3) Discussing and accumulating the background information needed for their designs. 4). Negotiating the criteria for evaluating the projects. 5). Accumulating the materials necessary for the project. 6). Creating their projects. 7). Preparing to present their projects. 8). Presenting their projects. 9). Reflecting on the process and evaluating the projects based on the criteria established. By using wall magazine also bring some advantages for the students in their learning process. Project-based Learning shows the students’ participation of their competitive work in class and gives the students opportunities to share their individual opinion and information with their group's members in order to arrange their ideas and achieve their projects. Project-based Learning creates a positive atmosphere which allows the students to be more creative in learning English

Abstract Educators generally concur to the idea that one of the most essential goals of schooling is to empower students to become efficient problem solvers for the knowledge-based society. Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional methodology mainly focused on developing students’ abilities to deal with solving realistic issues by employing team-oriented strategies. The present paper discusses the opportunities of integrating PBL in the teaching of English for specific purposes, starting from the firm belief that by putting students in the role of effective collaborators, critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and capable communicators, the proposed strategies efficiently prepare cadets for real-life environments, for the challenges of their professional careers, and for an active citizenship. Drawing on a solid theoretical conceptualization of problem-based instruction, the article outlines the advantages of PBL for both teachers and students and proposes a series of practical strategies that are intended to facilitate our cadets’ development in four key skills – critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration, –with the help of project-based learning.

Expert says that having a critical thinking enables a person to decide about the right or wrong, so that problems can be handled responsively. Then, education is expected to facilitate students to be able to face and solve various problems agile. The learning approach taken must be able to facilitate students with teaching materials related to their lives, experiences and interests, so that they can relate them to real life. The learning approach that will be examined in this study is the PjBL Approach. This research aims to improve the critical thinking of students as the nation's next generation, so that they are able to face and solve various problems appropriately. The research was taken place in the training class which is held by Aceh Documentary Foundation in Banda Aceh. They have continuosly use this learning approch in their producing documentary film training. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and FGD. Data analysis used in this research is the Miles & Hubermen style, in which activities in the analysis included data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing / verification. The results of this research showed that the use of PjBL approach was indeed effective in increasing students' critical thinking because they practiced the knowledge they had acquired directly. However, the results obtained by each individual are different; Even though there was an increase in the way they thought, the level of criticism that was obtained by each student was different.

The current increase in the protest for women’s right all over the world, amidst the resurgence of feminist critical thinking in mainstream culture, is giving film researchers a lot to reflect on. Based on previous researches, it can be deduced that very little progress has been made to correct the stereotypical portrayal of women in Nollywood films by both male and female producers. In order to examine the stereotypes and investigate the extent to these stereotypes reflect the social reality of both genders in real life, Lionheart, a movie produced by a veteran Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji, with an average rating of 5.6/10 on IMDB (Internet Movie Database) and was nominated for an Oscar award was selected. Quantitative content analysis was applied and findings revealed that there was an effort by the producer to ‘demystify’ the power of men. The issues raised in the movie are topical and relevant to the feminist discourse on women’s representation in film and in the media generally. The movie also provides a way forward for gender-based discourse and serves as a point of reference for other female directors willing to interpret the role of women in a manner that is more accurate and truthfully reflective of their strengths and capacities. <em>This study aims to determine the application of PjBL model based on simple props and critical thinking skills of students in the School Laboratory course. This research uses research type Pre-Experimental Design with sample of all students of semester II which programmed Laboratory School on even semester 2016/2017 in </em><em>Program Studi Pendidikan Fisika Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Papua. The results showed that the props designed by students 74.0% ± SD 4.2 or are in a good category. Assessment of practical worksheet covers the aspect of format, content, language/writing, and benefits/functions obtained 80.3% ± SD 7.4 or are in the very good category. Critical thinking skills of the students during the learning that is 66.7% ± SD 4.9 or are in a good category. Therefore the application of PjBL learning based on simple props can be used to develop critical thinking skills.</em>
