This paper solves the Reynolds equation by the finite difference method in a fixed coordinate system with the static load acted in the vertical direction. All static and dynamic characteristics (including load capacity, attitude angle, side flow, friction force, misaligned moments, and eight linear force coefficients) of a horizontally grooved bearing under different eccentricity and misalignment conditions are presented and compared with available experimental data. The effects of misalignment on all these bearing characteristics and on the stability of the rotor-bearing system are analyzed.

This paper studies the static and dynamic coefficients of an externally pressurized porous gas journal bearing. The finite difference method is used to solve the Reynolds equation of the bearing to obtain the static load capacity. The linear perturbation method is adopted to derive the perturbation equations considering four degrees-of-freedom (4DOF), namely, the translational movements in x and y directions and the rotational movements around x and y directions. The effects of various parameters on the dynamic behaviors of the journal bearing are studied. These parameters include the bearing number, the supply pressure, the feeding parameter, the length-to-diameter ratio, the porosity parameter, the eccentricity ratio, and tilting angles. Simulated results prove that the proposed method is valid in estimating the static and dynamic characteristics of a porous gas journal bearing with 4DOF.

The Reynolds equation applicable to a self-acting partial-arc gas journal bearing is perturbed in terms of the compressibility number Λ. The resulting set of equations is then put into a standard form and Galerkin’s method is used to obtain bearing loads and stability derivatives. These results are expressed in a power series in Λ.

Both foil structure and surface texturing have been widely used to improve bearing performance. However, there is little research on their combination, namely, textured gas foil bearing. This paper adopts the Reynolds equation as the pressure governing equation of bump-type foil journal bearing to study the influence of textures located on the top foil. The Newton-Raphson iterative method and the perturbation method are employed to obtain static and dynamic characteristics, respectively. Thereafter, based on three texture distribution types, further analysis about the effect of the relative texture depth and the textured portion is carried out. The results indicate that an appropriate arrangement of textures could improve the performance of gas foil bearing. For #1 texture distribution, the maximum increment of load capacity could exceed 10% when ω  =  1.4 × 105 r/min, ε  =  0.2.

Static and dynamic characteristics of load-on-type rolling-pad journal bearings with six pads have been studied theoretically and experimentally by considering the effects of both turbulence and viscous heat generation in the oil film. By concurrently solving a turbulent lubrication equation and an adiabatic energy equation, pressure and temperature distributions, load capacity, and friction force are obtained. Moreover, the linearlized spring and damping coefficients of oil film are calculated under the assumption of small displacements of the journal center. It is found that the load capacity and the friction force considerably increase due to turbulence, and the effects of heat generated under turbulent conditions are more pronounced than those under laminar conditions. Also clarified are that bearing characteristics are improved by preloading the lower-side two pads located before and after the lowest pad, and that the curvature radius of the pad insignificantly affects the characteristics. The experimental results on static characteristics agree well with the theoretical results.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of turbulent, inertia, and misaligned effects on the static and dynamic characteristics and stability of high-speed water-lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearings. Based on the Navier–Stokes equation, the mixing-length theory, and the essential assumption that the velocity profile is not strongly affected by inertia force, the fluid lubrication model with turbulent, inertia, and misaligned effects is established, and then the stability analysis of bearings is carried out based on the equation of motion with four degrees of freedom. The model is solved by the finite difference method and the numerical results are compared under different operating conditions. The results show that the turbulent effect greatly increases the load capacity, power consumption, stiffness and damping coefficients, and stability of bearings, and the inertia effect significantly increases the volume flow rate of bearings, and the misaligned effect increases the load capacity, stiffness and damping coefficients, and stability of bearings. In high rotary speed and moderate eccentricity ratios, the influence of the inertia effect on the load capacity, stiffness coefficients, and stability cannot be neglected.

The spiral grooves structures could promote load capacity and improve stability of the gas journal bearings working in high-speed condition. In this study, the unsteady Reynolds equation is solved by linear perturbation method and finite difference method in which the mesh of the groove region is specially treated. The static and dynamic characteristics of spiral grooves journal gas bearings are investigated in different working conditions and the pumping effect caused by spiral-groove structure is revealed and analyzed. Further, the influences of groove structural parameters on the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients are studied and discussed, which provides guidelines for the design of the journal gas bearings with spiral grooves.

Recently, herringbone-grooved journal bearings (HGJBs) have important applications in high-speed rotating machinery. The groove action in pumping the lubricating fluid inward generates supporting stiffness and improves the stability of the bearing when operating concentrically. Several researchers have investigated the static and dynamic characteristics of HGJBs and grooved thrust bearings. Most of these investigations were theoretical and concentrated on HGJBs with rectangular-profile grooves. In the present work, the static and dynamic characteristics of the beveled-step HGJBs are experimentally investigated. The bearing attitude angle, pressure distribution, and bearing friction torque were measured on a hydrodynamic lubrication unit, and then the static and dynamic characteristics were determined. The obtained experimental results are compared to the obtained experimental results for plain journal bearing. The merits as well as the demerits of the groove profile were discussed through comparisons with plain journal bearings.

The upscaling of turbomachinery using gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) is limited because of their limited load capacity and dynamic stability. The improvement potential of shim foil inserted under the bump foil of such bearings is investigated in terms of better bearing performance. The arch height difference Δ hb between the shim foil and bump foil can be zero or not to attain the different effect. By considering the local hardening structural stiffness and an Initial installation clearance due to the shim foil, the static and dynamic characteristics of the novel bearing were calculated through the finite difference method (FDM) and perturbation method, respectively. In the analysis, a modified bump stiffness model considering the variable foil thickness was established, and a 2 D thick plate model was adopted for the top foil. The characteristics of novel GFJB with and without preload were compared with the traditional bearing. The results indicate that the load capacity and direct stiffness of the novel GFJB with shim foil can be increased largely, especially when there is a preload (Δ hb≠0). And the improvement is reinforced as the increment of Δ hb. Moreover, the stability threshold speed ( STS) of rotor supported by the novel GFJBs is enhanced by the preload, which means better stability. In addition, an air compressor test has also been conducted to verify the improved supporting performance of novel bearings. Based on this study it is convinced that the addition of shim foil under a GFJB's bump foil can be of practical interest in the quest of enhanced load capacity and dynamic stability. Moreover, the installation of shim foil is not affected by the working environment and could even be retrofited on the existing GFJBs.

The plain circular journal bearings are not found to be stable by researchers when used in high speed rotating machineries. Hence, extensive research in the study of stability characteristics of non-circular bearings or lobed bearings assumed importance, of late. Present article deals with the stability analysis of non-circular offset bearing by taking selected set of input and output parameters. Modified Reynolds equation for micropolar lubricated rigid journal bearing system is solved using finite element method. Two kinds of input parameters namely, offset factors (0.2, 0.4) and aspect ratios (1.6, 2.0) have been selected for the study. The important output characteristics such as load, critical mass, whirl frequency ratio, and threshold speed are computed and plotted for various set of values of input parameters. The results obtained indicate that micropolar lubricated circular offset bearing is highly stable for higher offset factor and higher aspect ratio.
