An Experimental and Computational Study of Transonic Three-Dimensional Flow in a Turbine Cascade

Detailed experimental measurements of the flow in a cascade of turbine rotor blades with a nonplanar end wall are reported. The cascade geometry was chosen to model as closely as possible that of a H.P. gas turbine rotor blade. The blade section is designed for supersonic flow with an exit Mach number of 1.15 and the experiments covered a range of exit Mach numbers from 0.7–1.2. Significant three-dimensional effects were observed and the origin of these is discussed. The measurements are compared with data for the same blade section in a two-dimensional cascade and also with the predictions of two different fully three-dimensional inviscid flow calculation methods. It is found that both these calculations predict the major three-dimensional effects on the flow correctly.

A linear design system, already in use for the forward and inverse design of three-dimensional turbine aerofoils, has been extended for the design of their end walls. This paper shows how this method has been applied to the design of a nonaxisymmetric end wall for a turbine rotor blade in linear cascade. The calculations show that nonaxisymmetric end wall profiling is a powerful tool for reducing secondary flows, in particular the secondary kinetic energy and exit angle deviations. Simple end wall profiling is shown to be at least as beneficial aerodynamically as the now standard techniques of differentially skewing aerofoil sections up the span, and (compound) leaning of the aerofoil. A design is presented that combines a number of end wall features aimed at reducing secondary loss and flow deviation. The experimental study of this geometry, aimed at validating the design method, is the subject of the second part of this paper. The effects of end wall perturbations on the flow field are calculated using a three-dimensional pressure correction based Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes CFD code. These calculations are normally performed overnight on a cluster of work stations. The design system then calculates the relationships between perturbations in the end wall and resulting changes in the flow field. With these available, linear superposition theory is used to enable the designer to investigate quickly the effect on the flow field of many combinations of end wall shapes (a matter of minutes for each shape). This study aims to design an axial turbine rotor blade and predict the turbine performance at preliminary design stage. Quasi three dimensional method was applied to design including blade to blade flow analysis. The blade profile uses a NACA 0015 airfoil by varying the profile thickness from hub to tip. The profile is divided into eleven segments which has different parameters. The profile was analysed using blade to blade flow/cascade flow analysis called vortex panel method to obtain lift coefficient. The analysis of cascade flow was performed in potential flow and prediction of turbine perfomance is carried out involving common best practice to give drag effect on the blade. The design of the turbine was applied on three different rotors, which also have a different discharge, head, and design rotation. The outer diameter of turbine 1 is 0.65 m, while turbine 2 and turbine 3 have an outer diameter of 0,60 m. The calculation result show that the efficiency of turbines 1, 2, and 3 were 88,32%, 89,67%, and 89,04%, respectively.

Aerodynamic investigations were performed on planar blade cascades representing two alternative root sections of rotor blades 54″ in length with straight fir-tree root. Each of the variants was designed for different number of blades in the rotor. This paper presents the results of measurements showing the dependency of the kinetic energy loss coefficient and the exit flow angle on the exit isoentropic Mach number and the angle of incidence. Images of the flow fields are also presented. The experimental data is analyzed to assess and document the difference between the two root section designs. Results show that requirement of straight fir tree root leading to high design incidence angles significantly limit operation range. Also in case of root sections with high exit Mach numbers a limit load conditions are an issue. In order to utilize available pressure drop blade cascade throat/pitch ratios should be kept as high as possible which favorites variant with lower number of blades and higher outlet metal angle (relative to axial direction).

Abstract Casting deviations introduce geometric variability that impacts the aerodynamic performance of turbomachinery. These effects are studied for a high-pressure turbine rotor blade from a modern aero-engine. A sample of 197 blades were measured using structured-light three-dimensional scanning, and the performance of each blade is quantified using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations. Casting variation is typically managed by applying geometric tolerances to determine the suitability of a component for service. The analysis demonstrates that this approach may not be optimal since it does not necessarily align with performance, in particular the capacity and efficiency. Alternatively, functional acceptance based on the predicted performance of each blade removes the uncertainty associated with geometric tolerancing and gives better performance control. Building on these findings, the paper proposes a method to set the orientation of the fir-tree, which is machined after casting. By customizing the alignment of each blade, performance variability and scrap rates can be significantly reduced. The method uses predictions of performance to reorient the castings to compensate for manufacturing-induced errors, without changing the design-intent blade geometry and with minimal changes to the manufacturing facility.

This paper presents a study of the blade pressure perturbation levels and the resulting rotor blade force in three high-pressure transonic turbine stages, based on three-dimensional unsteady viscous computations. The aim is to identify stage characteristics that correlate with the perturbation strength and degree of force realization on the rotor blades. To address the effects of off-design operation, the computations were performed at high subsonic, design and higher vane exit Mach number operating conditions. Furthermore spanwise variations in pressure levels and blade force are addressed. In our investigation the RMS of the pressure perturbations integrated in both time and along the blade surface is utilized as a global measure of the blade pressure perturbation strength on the rotor blade surface. The relative strength of the different pressure perturbation events on the rotor blade surface is also investigated. To obtain information about the relative strength of events related to the blade passing frequency the pressure field is Fourier decomposed in time at different radial positions along the blade arc-length. With the help of the observations and results from the blade pressure study, the radial variations of the unsteady blade force are addressed.

This study is aimed at exploring the possibility of aerodynamic performance improvement by providing part-span forward sweep and lean near the tip regions of axial flow turbine rotor blades. Such aerodynamic benefits may have application potential in the uncooled LPT blades. The curved forward sweep and curved lean have been provided to 25% of the blade span near the tip in cascade, Three sets of cascades of the same turbine airfoil have been studied — (i) straight blades, (ii) part span swept blades and (iii) part span leaned blades. The cascade results show that swept blade gives a recovery of 20–25% loss in blade performance near the tip region at 0° and 10° incidences. The swept and leaned blades suppress the Cp perturbations (as seen in straight blades) at 0° and at 10° incidences, on the suction surfaces of turbine blade cascades. Comparatively the leaned blades show blade unloading, largely on the pressure surface, which leads to some performance reduction. The wake loss study shows reduction in wake losses for swept turbine blade at near tip region. The end-wall boundary layer measurements across the open tips demonstrate some aerodynamic improvement, near the tip regions, for parts-span swept and leaned blades.

Abstract The effect of the tip-shroud seal on the flutter onset of a shrouded turbine rotor blade, representative of a modern gas turbine, is numerically tested and the contribution to the work-per-cycle of the aerofoil and the tip-shroud are clearly identified. The numerical simulations are conducted using a linearised frequency domain solver. The flutter stability of the shrouded rotor blade is evaluated for an edgewise mode and compared with the standard industrial approach of not including the tip-shroud cavity. It turns out that including the tip shroud significantly changes the stability prediction of the rotor blade. This is due to the fact that the amplitude of the unsteady pressure created in the inter-fin cavity, due to the motion of the airfoil, is much greater than that of the airfoil. It is concluded that the combined effect of the seal and its platform tends to stabilise the rotor blade for all the examined nodal diameters and reduced frequencies. Finally, the numerical results are shown to be consistent with those obtained using an analytical simplified model to account for the effect of the labyrinth seals.

An experimental and numerical study was performed about the influence of incoming wakes and the calming effect on a very high lift low pressure turbine rotor blade. The first part of the paper describes the experimental determination of the pressure loss coefficient and the heat transfer around the blade mounted in a high speed linear cascade. The cascade is exposed to incoming wakes generated by high speed rotating bars. Their aim is to act upon the transition/separation phenomena. The measurements were conducted at a constant exit Mach number equal to 0.8 and at three Reynolds number values, namely 190000, 350000 and 650000. The inlet turbulence level was fixed at 0.8%. An additional feature of this work is to identify the boundary layer status through heat transfer measurements. Compared to the traditionally used hot films, thin film heat flux gages provide fully quantitative data required for code validation. Numerical computations are presented in the second part of the paper.
