AbstractHigh-entropy ceramics (HECs) have shown great application potential under demanding conditions, such as high stresses and temperatures. However, the immense phase space poses great challenges for the rational design of new high-performance HECs. In this work, we develop machine-learning (ML) models to discover high-entropy ceramic carbides (HECCs). Built upon attributes of HECCs and their constituent precursors, our ML models demonstrate a high prediction accuracy (0.982). Using the well-trained ML models, we evaluate the single-phase probability of 90 HECCs that are not experimentally reported so far. Several of these predictions are validated by our experiments. We further establish the phase diagrams for non-equiatomic HECCs spanning the whole composition space by which the single-phase regime can be easily identified. Our ML models can predict both equiatomic and non-equiatomic HECs based solely on the chemical descriptors of constituent transition-metal-carbide precursors, which paves the way for the high-throughput design of HECCs with superior properties.

In recent years, the incidence of breast cancer has been increasing on an annual basis. Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) is overexpressed in 15-20% human breast cancers, which is associated with poor prognosis and a high recurrence rate. Trastuzumab is the first humanized monoclonal antibody against HER-2. The most significant adverse effect of trastuzumab is cardiotoxicity, which has become an important factor in limiting the safe use of the drug. Unfortunately, the mechanism causing this cardiotoxicity is still not completely understood, and the use of preventive interventions remains controversial. This article focuses on trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity, reviewing the clinical application, potential cardiotoxicity, mechanism and discussing the potential interventions through summarizing related researches over the past tens of years.

Abstract In this paper, a simple mass oscillator metasurface is designed, which can regulate the phase shift of flexural wave covering 0-2π by adjusting the number of mass oscillators on the connecting bar. Based on the forced vibration theory, there is a simple approximately linear relationship between the number and phase shift of mass oscillators, which can more intuitively and accurately predict the phase of different number of mass oscillators, and then realize the metasurface design of mass oscillators with different requirements. Therefore, arbitrary regulation of flexural waves, such as abnormal refraction, beam focusing, and self-acceleration, can be realized by reasonably arranging the number of mass oscillators. The results show that the proposed metasurface can be greatly simplified both in the establishment of phase shift relation and in the fabrication of structure configuration, and will have broad application potential in the engineering field.

Natural products have antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and other pharmacological activities and are an important source of drugs for prevention and treatment of various diseases. However, the inherent defects of natural products in physiological media such as poor solubility and stability and short biological half-life limit their clinical application. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the science of drug delivery by nanoscale materials. A large number of in vitro and in vivo studies have further confirmed the efficacy and safety of nanomedicine based on natural products in preclinical models of various diseases. In this review, we summarized the achievements of nanomaterials in improving the efficacy of natural products, introduced the research progress in several key fields of natural product-based nanomedicine in medical application, and discussed the challenges and prospects of clinical transformation of nanomedicine.

Hydrogel composites can be prepared from cellulose-based materials and other gel materials, thus combining the advantages of both kinds of material. The aerogel, porous material formed after removing the water in the hydrogel, can maintain the network structure. Hydrogel and aerogel have high application potential. However, low mechanical strength and weight loss of cellulose hydrogel due to the water dehydration/absorption limit the feasibility of repeated use. In this study, cellulose hydrogels were prepared using microcrystalline cellulose (MC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as raw materials. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was added during the preparation process to form cellulose/WPU composite hydrogel and aerogel. The influence of the cellulose type and WPU addition ratio on the performance of hydrogel and aerogel were investigated. The results show that the introduction of WPU can help strengthen and stabilize the structure of cellulose hydrogel, reduce weight loss caused by water absorption and dehydration, and improve its reusability. The mixing of cellulose and WPU at a weight ratio of 90/10 is the best ratio to make the cellulose/WPU composite aerogel with the highest water swelling capacity and heat resistance.

Abstract Ti/Al bimetallic structure (BS) has a good development prospect and broader application potential in aerospace engineering. Considering the limitation that dissimilar welding is only applicable to the thin plate, it is necessary to explore a new manufacturing process for Ti/Al BS. In this study, a TC4/AlSi12 BS was prepared by laser additive manufacturing (LAM). TC4 zone, AlSi12 zone and transition zone were formed in the LAM process. Due to the sufficient diffusion reaction, the transition zone with a width of about 0.8mm was obtained. At the same time, a few micro-cracks were found in the transition zone. The microstructure and phase composition of the transition zone had been emphatically studied. Research results showed that the presence of Si element made the phase composition of the transition zone more complicated. The structure evolution from TC4 to AlSi12 was: α-Ti → Ti3Al → TiAl+(TiAl+Si) → Ti5Si3 → TiAl3+(α-Al+Si) → α-Al+ Si +TiAl3 +(α-Al+Si) → α-Al+Si+(α-Al+Si). The hardness distribution of BS was uneven, with the highest value reaching 524HV. The tensile strength of the TC4/AlSi12 BS was about 110Mpa, and the fracture location was located in the transition zone.

Abstract The application potential of singlet fission (SF), describing the spontaneous conversion of an excited singlet into two triplets, underlines the necessity to independently control SF rates, energetics and the optical band gap. Heterofission, whereby the singlet splits into triplets on chemically distinct chromophores, is a promising approach to control the above-mentioned parameters, but its details are not yet fully understood. Here, we investigate the photophysics of blends of two prototypical SF chromophores, tetracene (TET) and rubrene (RUB) using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) to explore the potential for heterofission in combinations of endothermic SF chromophores.

There has been much concern about germanium because of its special atomic nuclear structure to generate negative electrons and far-infrared ray. In this study, novel germanium-polyamide6 fibers were prepared by using micro–nano structured germanium particles as a functional component via melt spinning. The effects of germanium concentration on the morphology, mechanical, negative air ion-releasing, and far-infrared radiation properties of the germanium-polyamide6 fibers were systematically investigated. Besides, the antibacterial activity and mechanism of the fibers against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were also discussed. Even though the added germanium particles negatively affected the mechanical performance of the fiber, they were distributed well in the polyamide6 substrate when the concentration was increased from 2% to 6%. Increasing the temperature and pressure induced the germanium-polyamide6 fibers to produce more negative air ions and high far-infrared emissivity. The negative air ion-releasing property of the fiber led to antibacterial performance against S. aureus with more than 99% antibacterial rate. The results confirmed the great application potential of germanium in healthcare, medical, home, and apparel textiles.
