Flow in an Open Tank With a Free Surface Driven by the Spinning Bottom

An investigation is made of flows of a viscous incompressible fluid inside a circular cylindrical tank. The flow is driven by the spinning bottom endwall disk of the tank. Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations were obtained over a range of rotational Reynolds number and of aspect ratio (cylinder height/radius) using two kinds of boundary condition at the top: a closed tank with a rigid lid and an open tank with a free surface. We provide descriptions of flow details for these two boundary conditions at the top. For small aspect ratios, the nature of the azimuthal flow is distinctly different depending on the type of the top boundary condition, i.e., a Couette flow under a rigid lid and a solid-body rotation under a free surface. These qualitative flow patterns are insensitive to the Reynolds number. For flows with a finite aspect ratio and at small Reynolds numbers, the change in the top boundary condition has little impact on the flow. For flows with a finite aspect ratio and at large Reynolds numbers, the prevailing flow patterns are of boundary layer-type. At a given vertical level, the angular velocity attains a larger value under a free surface than under a rigid lid.

This paper concerns the two-dimensional motion of a viscous liquid down a perturbed inclined plane under the influence of gravity, and the main goal is the prediction of the surface height as the fluid flows over the perturbations. The specific perturbations chosen for the present study were two humps stretching laterally across an otherwise uniform plane, with the flow being confined in the lateral direction by the walls of a channel. Theoretical predictions of the flow have been obtained by finite-element approximations to the Navier-Stokes equations and also by a variety of lubrication approximations. The predictions from the various models are compared with experimental measurements of the free-surface profiles. The principal aim of this study is the establishment and assessment of certain numerical and asymptotic models for the description of a class of free-surface flows, exemplified by the particular case of flow over a perturbed inclined plane. The laboratory experiments were made over a range of flow rates such that the Reynolds number, based on the volume flux per unit width and the kinematical viscosity of the fluid, ranged between 0.369 and 36.6. It was found that, at the smaller Reynolds numbers, a standard lubrication approximation provided a very good representation of the experimental measurements but, as the flow rate was increased, the standard model did not capture several important features of the flow. On the other hand, a lubrication approximation allowing for surface tension and inertial effects expanded the range of applicability of the basic theory by almost an order of magnitude, up to Reynolds numbers approaching 10. At larger flow rates, numerical solutions to the full equations of motion provided a description of the experimental results to within about 4% , up to a Reynolds number of 25, beyond which we were unable to obtain numerical solutions. It is not known why numerical solutions were not possible at larger flow rates, but it is possible that there is a bifurcation of the Navier-Stokes equations to a branch of unsteady motions near a Reynolds number of 25.

The problem considered is that of the steady motion of a series of neutrally buoyant, flat-faced, rigid, cylindrical capsules along the axis of a pipeline under the influence of a hydraulic pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are non-dimensionalized and expressed in central-difference form. Numerical solutions are found by the method of relaxation for Reynolds numbers up to 20 000 and a close agreement is obtained with readings from a laboratory apparatus for Reynolds numbers up to 2200.The flow is examined in detail and the existence of toroidal vortices between successive capsules is demonstrated. Their shape is shown to be increasingly influenced by inertial forces as the Reynolds number increases, but the overall pressure gradient is not greatly dependent on the Reynolds number.

Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are obtained for steady two-dimensional flow in the inlet region of both a tube and a channel. The entering flow is considered to be either uniform (u = constant, v = 0) or irrotational (u = constant, ω = 0). Values of Reynolds number Re = u0a/ν range from 0.75 to 2 × 106. An improved method for solving the stream function-vorticity equations of hydrodynamics has been developed. The method is stable at all Reynolds numbers and appears to be computationally superior to previous methods.

Heat transfer distributions are presented for a stationary three passage serpentine internal cooling channel for a range of engine representative Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the sidewalls of the serpentine passage is fixed and the aspect ratio (AR) is adjusted to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 by changing the distance between the top and bottom walls. Data are presented for aspect ratios of 1:1 and 1:6 for smooth passage walls and for aspect ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 for passages with two surfaces turbulated. For the turbulated cases, turbulators skewed 45° to the flow are installed on the top and bottom walls. The square turbulators are arranged in an offset parallel configuration with a fixed rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) of 10 and a rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/Dh) range of 0.100 to 0.058 for AR 1:1 to 1:6, respectively. The experiments span a Reynolds number range of 4,000 to 130,000 based on the passage hydraulic diameter. While this experiment utilizes a basic layout similar to previous research, it is the first to run an aspect ratio as large as 1:6, and it also pushes the Reynolds number to higher values than were previously available for the 1:2 aspect ratio. The results demonstrate that while the normalized Nusselt number for the AR 1:2 configuration changes linearly with Reynolds number up to 130,000, there is a significant change in flow behavior between Re = 25,000 and Re = 50,000 for the aspect ratio 1:6 case. This suggests that while it may be possible to interpolate between points for different flow conditions, each geometric configuration must be investigated independently. The results show the highest heat transfer and the greatest heat transfer enhancement are obtained with the AR 1:6 configuration due to greater secondary flow development for both the smooth and turbulated cases. This enhancement was particularly notable for the AR 1:6 case for Reynolds numbers at or above 50,000.

Computations of two-dimensional solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations are carried out for finite-amplitude waves on steady unidirectional flow. Several cases are considered. The numerical method employs pseudospectral techniques in the streamwise direction and finite differences on a stretched grid in the transverse direction, with matching to asymptotic solutions when unbounded. Earlier results for Poiseuille flow in a channel are re-obtained, except that attention is drawn to the dependence of the minimum Reynolds number on the physical constraint of constant flux or constant pressure gradient. Attempts to calculate waves in Couette flow by continuation in the velocity of a channel wall fail. The asymptotic suction boundary layer is shown to possess finite-amplitude waves at Reynolds numbers orders of magnitude less than the critical Reynolds number for linear instability. Waves in the Blasius boundary layer and unsteady Rayleigh profile are calculated by employing the artifice of adding a body force to cancel the spatial or temporal growth. The results are verified by comparison with perturbation analysis in the vicinity of the linear-instability critical Reynolds numbers.

Slamming forces on 2D and 3D bodies have been computed based on a CIP method. The highly nonlinear water entry problem governed by the Navier-Stokes equations was solved by a CIP based finite difference method on a fixed Cartesian grid. In the computation, a compact upwind scheme was employed for the advection calculations and a pressure-based algorithm was applied to treat the multiple phases. The free surface and the body boundaries were captured using density functions. For the pressure calculation, a Poisson-type equation was solved at each time step by the conjugate gradient iterative method. Validation studies were carried out for 2D wedges with various deadrise angles ranging from 0 to 60 degrees at constant vertical velocity. In the cases of wedges with small deadrise angles, the compressibility of air between the bottom of the wedge and the free surface was modelled. Studies were also extended to 3D bodies, such as a sphere, a cylinder and a catamaran, entering calm water. Computed pressures, free surface elevations and hydrodynamic forces were compared with experimental data and the numerical solutions by other methods.

Wind tunnel results are reported concerning the effects of blade aspect ratio and Reynolds number on the performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) with Mie-type1 tip attachments. The flow behaviour around the blade tips and the Mie-type tip vanes is presented. Detailed surface oil film visualization and velocity measurements around the blade tips, with and without Mie vanes, were obtained with the two-dimensional, Laser-Doppler Velocimetry method. Experiments were performed with rotors having blades with different aspect ratio and operating at different Reynolds numbers. The properties of the vortices generated by the Mie vanes and the blade tips were carefully studied. It was found that increased power augmentation by Mie vanes is achieved with blades having smaller aspect ratio and smaller Reynolds number.

Using direct numerical simulations performed on periodic cubes of various sizes, the largest being $8192^3$ , we examine the nonlinear advection term in the Navier–Stokes equations generating fully developed turbulence. We find significant dissipation even in flow regions where nonlinearity is locally absent. With increasing Reynolds number, the Navier–Stokes dynamics amplifies the nonlinearity in a global sense. This nonlinear amplification with increasing Reynolds number renders the vortex stretching mechanism more intermittent, with the global suppression of nonlinearity, reported previously, restricted to low Reynolds numbers. In regions where vortex stretching is absent, the angle and the ratio between the convective vorticity and solenoidal advection in three-dimensional isotropic turbulence are statistically similar to those in the two-dimensional case, despite the fundamental differences between them.

Local turbulent convective heat transfer from a flat plate to a circular impinging air jet is numerically investigated. The jet-to-plate distance (L/D) effect on local heat transfer is the main focus of this study. The eddy viscosity V2F turbulence model is used with a nonuniform structured mesh. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) and the energy equation are solved for axisymmetric, three-dimensional flow. The numerical solutions obtained are compared with published experimental data. Four jet-to-plate distances, (L/D = 2, 4, 6 and 10) and seven Reynolds numbers (Re = 7,000, 15,000, 23,000, 50,000, 70,000, 100,000 and 120,000) were parametrically studied. Local and average heat transfer results are analyzed and correlated with Reynolds number and the jet-to-plate distance. Results show that the numerical solutions matched experimental data best at low jet-to-plate distances and lower Reynolds numbers, decreasing in ability to accurately predict the heat transfer as jet-to-plate distance and Reynolds number was increased.

A cylinder filled with a viscous, incompressible fluid is in an initial state of rigid-body rotation about its axis of symmetry. If the container is brought to rest impulsively, the resulting unsteady spin-down flow may be subject to sidewall instabilities due to an imbalance between centrifugal and pressure gradient forces. These instabilities are examined numerically using a finite-difference simulation to integrate the axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations for a variety of aspect ratios and Reynolds numbers. The Taylor–Görtler vortex-wavelength spectrum, the torque and the angular momentum histories are calculated. Criteria for the onset time for instability and the spin-down time are given. The effects of the enhanced mixing due to instability on the spin-down characteristics and torque are discussed. The results are compared with experiment.
