Tip and Junction Vortices Generated by the Sail of a Yawed Submarine Model at Low Reynolds Numbers

Results are presented on the behavior of the tip and junction vortices generated by the sail of a SUBOFF submarine model at yaw angles from 6 deg to 17 deg for a Reynolds number of 94×103 based on model length. The measurements were conducted in a water channel on a spanwise plane 1.3 chord lengths downstream from the trailing edge of the sail. In the vicinity of the sail hull junction, the presence of streamwise vortices in the form of horseshoe or necklace vortices locally dominates the flow. As the yaw angle is increased from 6 deg to 9 deg, the circulation of the sail tip vortex increases, and is in good accordance with predictions from finite wing theory. However, as the yaw angle is further increased, the sail boundary layer separates with an overall drop in circulation. In contrast, the circulation value for the junction vortex increases with yaw angle, and only drops slightly at the highest yaw angle.

Tip vortices generated by marine lifting surfaces such as propeller blades, ship rudders, hydrofoil wings, and antiroll fins can lead to cavitation. Prediction of the onset of this cavitation depends on model tests at Reynolds numbers much lower than those for the corresponding full-scale flows. The effect of Reynolds number variations on the scaling of tip vortex cavitation inception is investigated using a theoretical flow similarity approach. The ratio of the circulations in the full-scale and model-scale trailing vortices is obtained by assuming that the spanwise distributions of the section lift coefficients are the same between the model-scale and the full-scale. The vortex pressure distributions and core sizes are derived using the Rankine vortex model and McCormick’s assumption about the dependence of the vortex core size on the boundary layer thickness at the tip region. Using a logarithmic law to describe the velocity profile in the boundary layer over a large range of Reynolds number, the boundary layer thickness becomes dependent on the Reynolds number to a varying power. In deriving the scaling of the cavitation inception index as the ratio of Reynolds numbers to an exponent m, the values of m are not constant and are dependent on the values of the model- and full-scale Reynolds numbers themselves. This contrasts traditional scaling for which m is treated as a fixed value that is independent of Reynolds numbers. At very high Reynolds numbers, the present theory predicts the value of m to approach zero, consistent with the trend of these flows to become inviscid. Comparison of the present theory with available experimental data shows promising results, especially with recent results from high Reynolds number tests. Numerical examples of the values of m are given for different model- to full-scale sizes and Reynolds numbers.

There has been a need for improved prediction methods for low pressure turbine (LPT) blades operating at low Reynolds numbers. This is known to occur when LPT blades are subjugated to high altitude operations causing a decrease in the inlet Reynolds number. Boundary layer separation is more likely to be present within the flowfield of the LPT stages due to increase in the region adverse pressure gradients on the blade suction surface. Accurate CFD predictions are needed in order to improve design methods and performance prediction of LPT stages operating at low Reynolds numbers. CFD models were created for the flow over two low pressure turbine blade designs using a new turbulent transitional flow model, originally developed by Walters and Leylek (2004, “A New Model for Boundary Layer Transition Using a Single Point RANS Approach,” ASME J. Turbomach., 126(1), pp. 193–202). Part I of this study applied Walters and Leylek’s model to a cascade CFD model of a LPT blade airfoil with a light loading level. Flows were simulated over a Reynolds number range of 15,000–100,000 and predicted the laminar-to-turbulent transitional flow behavior adequately. It showed significant improvement in performance prediction compared to conventional RANS turbulence models. Part II of this paper presents the application of the prediction methodology developed in Part I to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional cascade models of a largely separated LPT blade geometry with a high blade loading level. Comparisons were made with available experimental cascade results on the prediction of the inlet Reynolds number effect on surface static pressure distribution, suction surface boundary layer behavior, and the wake total pressure loss coefficient. The kT-kL-ω transitional flow model accuracy was judged sufficient for an understanding of the flow behavior within the flow passage, and can identify when and where a separation event occurs. This model will provide the performance prediction needed for modeling of low Reynolds number effects on more complex geometries.

Measurements in a boundary layer in zero pressure gradient show that the effect of grid-generated free-stream turbulence is to increase heat transfer by about five percent for each one percent rms increase of the longitudinal intensity. In fact, even a Reynolds analogy factor, 2 × (Stanton number)/(skin-friction coefficient), increases significantly. It is suggested that the irreconcilable differences between previous measurements are attributable mainly to the low Reynolds numbers of most of those measurements. The present measurements attained a momentum-thickness Reynolds number of 6500 (chord Reynolds number approximately 6.3 × 106) and are thought to be typical of high-Reynolds-number flows.

The present study deals with the noninvasive measurement of both velocity and concentration in the near region of shallow turbulent wakes using a laser-Doppler anemometer and a video-imaging technique. A 40 mm wide flat plate placed normal to the flow is used as the wake generator. The flow depths considered in the present study are small compared to the width of the channel and the generated wakes are categorized as shallow. Tests were conducted at two depths of flow (h=20 and 40 mm) and the boundary layer thickness of the approaching flow is comparable to the depth. The Reynolds number of the flow based on the approaching freestream boundary layer momentum thickness varies from 180 to 400, while, the Reynolds number based on the test body width was maintained nearly constant (≈4000). Measurements were carried out at three axial stations (2.5, 5, and 10 plate widths) downstream of the bluff body. At each axial station, the velocity measurements were carried at distances of h/4,h/2, and 3h/4 from the channel bottom and spanning the cross section of the wake. Appropriate length and velocity scales are identified to characterize the wake. The axial variation of the shallow wake half-width based on both the lateral velocity profile and the lateral concentration profile is also obtained. A shear parameter is introduced to analyze the relative effects of transverse shear and bed friction. [S0098-2202(00)01802-2]

Abstract The two-dimensional flow around a stationary heated circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers of 50 < Re < 210 is investigated numerically using the FLUENT commercial software package. The dimensionless vortex shedding frequency (St) reduces with increasing temperature at a given Reynolds number. The effective temperature concept was used and St-Re data were successfully transformed to the St-Reeff curve. Comparisons include root-mean-square values of the lift coefficient and Nusselt number. The results agree well with available data in the literature.

Natural flight has consistently been the wellspring of many creative minds, yet recreating the propulsive systems of natural flyers is quite hard and challenging. Regarding propulsive systems design, biomimetics offers a wide variety of solutions that can be applied at low Reynolds numbers, achieving high performance and maneuverability systems. The main goal of the current work is to computationally investigate the thrust-power intricacies while operating at different Reynolds numbers, reduced frequencies, nondimensional amplitudes, and mean angles of attack of the oscillatory motion of a NACA0012 airfoil. Simulations are performed utilizing a RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) approach for a Reynolds number between 8.5×103 and 3.4×104, reduced frequencies within 1 and 5, and Strouhal numbers from 0.1 to 0.4. The influence of the mean angle-of-attack is also studied in the range of 0∘ to 10∘. The outcomes show ideal operational conditions for the diverse Reynolds numbers, and results regarding thrust-power correlations and the influence of the mean angle-of-attack on the aerodynamic coefficients and the propulsive efficiency are widely explored.

The performance of the low pressure turbine (LPT) can vary appreciably, because this component operates under a wide range of Reynolds numbers. At higher Reynolds numbers, mid and aft loaded profiles have the advantage that transition of suction side boundary layer happens further downstream than at front loaded profiles, resulting in lower profile loss. At lower Reynolds numbers, aft loading of the blade can mean that if a suction side separation exists, it may remain open up to the trailing edge. This is especially the case when blade lift is increased via increased pitch to chord ratio. There is a trend in research towards exploring the effect of coupling boundary layer control with highly loaded turbine blades, in order to maximize performance over the full relevant Reynolds number range. In an earlier work, pulsed blowing with fluidic oscillators was shown to be effective in reducing the extent of the separated flow region and to significantly decrease the profile losses caused by separation over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. These experiments were carried out in the High-Speed Cascade Wind Tunnel of the German Federal Armed Forces University Munich, Germany, which allows to capture the effects of pulsed blowing at engine relevant conditions. The assumed control mechanism was the triggering of boundary layer transition by excitation of the Tollmien-Schlichting waves. The current work aims to gain further insight into the effects of pulsed blowing. It investigates the effect of a highly efficient configuration of pulsed blowing at a frequency of 9.5 kHz on the boundary layer at a Reynolds number of 70000 and exit Mach number of 0.6. The boundary layer profiles were measured at five positions between peak Mach number and the trailing edge with hot wire anemometry and pneumatic probes. Experiments were conducted with and without actuation under steady as well as periodically unsteady inflow conditions. The results show the development of the boundary layer and its interaction with incoming wakes. It is shown that pulsed blowing accelerates transition over the separation bubble and drastically reduces the boundary layer thickness.

Two methods are described for calculating pressure distributions and boundary layers on blades subjected to low Reynolds numbers and ramp-type motion. The first is based on an interactive scheme in which the inviscid flow is computed by a panel method and the boundary layer flow by an inverse method that makes use of the Hilbert integral to couple the solutions of the inviscid and viscous flow equations. The second method is based on the solution of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations with an embedded grid technique that permits accurate calculation of boundary layer flows. Studies for the Eppler-387 and NACA-0012 airfoils indicate that both methods can be used to calculate the behavior of unsteady blade boundary layers at low Reynolds numbers provided that the location of transition is computed with the en method and the transitional region is modeled properly.
