Dynamic Modeling and Response Analysis of a Planar Rigid-Body Mechanism With Clearance

In order to understand dynamic responses of planar rigid-body mechanism with clearance, the dynamic model of the mechanism with revolute clearance is proposed and the dynamic analysis is realized. First, the kinematic model of the revolute clearance is built; the amount of penetration depth and relative velocity between the elements of the revolute clearance joint is obtained. Second, Lankarani-Nikravesh (L-N) and the novel nonlinear contact force model are both used to describe the normal contact force of the revolute clearance, and the tangential contact force of the revolute clearance is built by modified Coulomb friction model. Third, the dynamic model of a two degrees-of-freedom (2DOFs) nine bars rigid-body mechanism with a revolute clearance is built by the Lagrange equation. The fourth-order Runge–Kutta method has been utilized to solve the dynamic model. And the effects of different driving speeds of cranks, different clearance values, and different friction coefficients on dynamic response are analyzed. Finally, in order to prove the validity of numerical calculation result, the virtual prototype model of 2DOFs nine bars mechanism with clearance is modeled and its dynamic responses are analyzed by adams software. This research could supply theoretical basis for dynamic modeling, dynamic behaviors analysis, and clearance compensation control of planar rigid-body mechanism with clearance.

An intensive study on the dynamic modeling and analysis of compliant mechanisms is presented in this paper based on the pseudo-rigid-body model. The pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model with single degree-of-freedom is proposed at first and the dynamic equation of the 1R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model for a flexural beam is presented briefly. The pseudo-rigid-body dynamic models with multi-degrees-of-freedom are then derived in detail. The dynamic equations of the 2R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model and 3R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model for the flexural beams are obtained using Lagrange equation. Numerical investigations on the natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the three pseudo-rigid-body dynamic models are made. The effectiveness and superiority of the pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model has been shown by comparing with the finite element analysis method. An example of a compliant parallel-guiding mechanism is presented to investigate the dynamic behavior of the mechanism using the 2R pseudo-rigid-body dynamic model.

Abstract Modern spacecraft usually has large deployment structure, which consisting of plenty of joints could produce undesirable dynamic responses when considering clearances in joints and driving input fluctuation. However, in the dynamic performance analysis of space deployment mechanism, the clearances and input fluctuation are always ignored. In this study, the dynamic responses of a flexible planar scissor-like truss deployment mechanism with imperfect joint considering clearance and input fluctuation are investigated using computational methodology. First, the mathematic model of clearance joint is established. The revolute clearance joint is considered as force constraint and the joint components of an imperfect joint with clearance are modeled as contact bodies. The normal contact force model of clearance joint is established using a continuous contact force model considering energy loss. The friction effect is considered using a modified Coulomb friction model. Then, the dynamics performances of the flexible planar scissor-like truss deployment mechanism with imperfect joint considering clearance and input fluctuation are presented and discussed. Different case studies for the scissor-like truss deployment mechanism with clearance are investigated considering driving input fluctuation. The simulation results show that the dynamic characteristics of the mechanism with clearance joint are changed more obviously when considering driving input fluctuation. Therefore, investigation implies that dynamics responses of the truss deployment mechanism are much worse when considering clearance joint and input fluctuation, which indicates that driving input fluctuation leads to more obvious degradation of the dynamic performance of the truss deployment mechanism with imperfect joint.

AbstractThe non-smooth dynamic model of an unmanned bicycle is established to study the contact-separate and stick-slip non-smooth phenomena between wheels and the ground. According to the Carvallo-Whipple configuration, the unmanned bicycle is reduced to four rigid bodies, namely, rear wheel, rear frame, front fork, and front wheel, which are connected by perfect revolute joints. The interaction between each wheel and the ground is simplified as the normal contact force and the friction force at the contact point, and these forces are described by the Hunt-Crossley contact force model and the LuGre friction force model, respectively. According to the characteristics of flat and curved pavements, calculation methods for contact forces and their generalized forces are presented. The dynamics of the system is modeled by the Lagrange equations of the first kind, a numerical solution algorithm of the dynamic equations is presented, and the Baumgarte stabilization method is used to restrict the drift of the constraints. The correctness of the dynamic model and the numerical algorithm is verified in comparison with the previous studies. The feasibility of the proposed model is demonstrated by simulations under different motion states.

For the multibody simulation of planetary rover operations, a wheel-soil contact model is necessary to represent the forces and moments between the tire and the soft soil. A novel nonlinear contact modelling approach based on the properties of the hypervolume of interpenetration is validated in this paper. This normal contact force model is based on the Winkler foundation model with nonlinear spring properties. To fully define the proposed normal contact force model for this application, seven parameters are required. Besides the geometry parameters that can be easily measured, three soil parameters representing the hyperelastic and plastic properties of the soil have to be identified. Since it is very difficult to directly measure the latter set of soil parameters, they are identified by comparing computer simulations with experimental results of drawbar pull tests performed under different slip conditions on the Juno rover of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). A multibody dynamics model of the Juno rover including the new wheel/soil interaction model was developed and simulated in MapleSim. To identify the wheel/soil contact model parameters, the cost function of the model residuals of the kinematic data is minimized. The volumetric contact model is then tested by using the identified contact model parameters in a forward dynamics simulation of the rover on an irregular 3-dimensional terrain and compared against experiments.

The chaos phenomenon often exists in the dynamics system of the mechanism with clearance and friction, which has obvious effect on the stability of the mechanism, then it is worthy of attention for identifying the relationship between the friction coefficient and the stability of the mechanism. Two rotational degrees of freedom decoupled parallel mechanism RU-RPR is taken as the research object. Considering the clearance existing in the revolute pair, Lankarani–Nikravesh contact force model is used to calculate the normal contact force, and the Coulomb friction force model is used to calculate the tangential contact force. The dynamics model is established using Newton–Euler equations, and the Baumgarte stabilization method is used to keep the stability of the numerical analysis. Then, the equations are solved using the fourth adaptive Runge–Kutta method, and the effect of the revolute pair’s clearance on the dynamic behavior is analyzed. Poincare mapping is plotted, and the bifurcation diagrams are analyzed with varying the friction coefficient corresponding to different values of clearance size. The research contents possess a certain theoretical guidance significance and practical application value on the analysis of the chaotic motion and its stability in the dynamics of the parallel mechanism.

Clearance wear is one of the factors that affects dynamics for mechanical systems. A numerical methodology suitable for modeling and calculation of wear at multiple revolute clearance pairs in the field of the planar multilink mechanism is proposed. In this paper, the 2-DOF nine-bar mechanism considering two revolute clearance joints is regarded as the study object. Normal contact force and friction force models of revolute clearance joints used Lankarani–Nikravesh (L-N) and LuGre models, respectively. The iterative wear prediction process based upon Archard’s model has been applied to calculate wear characteristics. The wear prediction procedure is integrated with multibody dynamics, wear depths at revolute clearance joints are calculated, and the surface of shaft and bearing is reconstructed twice. The dynamic responses of mechanism considering two nonregular revolute clearances caused by wear are studied in depth. The nonlinear characteristics of the mechanism after wear are studied by the phase diagram and Poincaré map. Influences of different initial constant clearance values and different driving speeds on wear of two revolute joints are also researched. The results show that it is necessary to consider the factor of irregular clearances caused by wear in analysis of dynamics of precision mechanisms. Initial constant clearance values and driving speeds have some influence on wear phenomenon. This research provides a theoretical basis for studying dynamics of the planar multilink mechanism considering wear in multiple clearances.

In the past, contact model in the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) does not include the influence of the tangential contact interaction, and the deficient model associated with the contact force can seriously degrade the computing accuracy. In order to overcome this defect, an improved FDEM is developed in this work. The potential contact mechanism is implemented to calculate the normal contact force; meanwhile, the force-displacement law by coupling the classical Mohr–Coulomb type frictional algorithm and the rotation transformation algorithm is applied for the accurate computation of the tangential contact force. Consequently, a holonomic system of the calculation algorithm for the contact interaction is proposed, accounting for the influence of the tangential contact force. The performance of the approach is validated with well-known benchmarks including a frictional numerical test, the dynamic response of the block under the seismic excitation, a sliding/toppling test of a joint rock slope, a numerical simulation for joints structure affecting a sliding rock mass and the 2008 Donghekou Landslide trigged by the Wenchuan Earthquake. The results are compared against the experimental data and analytical solutions. Excellent agreements between the computational result and existing measurements show that the proposed approach has an outstanding ability to describe the complex mechanical properties among the separate entities.

By integrating the procedures of wear prediction with multibody dynamics, this paper proposed a numerical approach for the modeling and prediction of wear at revolute clearance joint in flexible multibody mechanical systems. In the approach, the flexible component was modeled by using absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF)-based element. The clearance joint was modeled as a dry contact pair, in which the continuous contact force model proposed by Lankanrani and Nikravesh was applied to evaluate the normal contact force, and the friction effect was considered using the LuGre friction model. The calculation of wear was performed by an iterative wear prediction procedure based on Archard’s wear model. Using this approach, a planar slider-crank mechanism including a flexible rod and clearance joint was numerically investigated as a demonstrative example. Furthermore, the effects of the flexibility of the mechanism and the clearance size on the wear at clearance joint were also studied.

Taking the parallel stabilizing platform based on 6-UPS structure as the research object, we deduced the multi-rigid-body dynamics modeling process by using the Lagrange method, and finished the dynamic response analysis of the platform. Then we conducted the collaborative modeling and simulation of the coupled dynamics analysis of the platform with ProE, ANSYS and ADAMS. The results indicate the correctness of the theoretical derivation of the multi-rigid-body dynamic model and the feasibility and necessity of collaborative simulation of the coupled dynamic model, which lay a foundation for further optimization design and practical application of the parallel platform.

Abstract The complex dynamic behaviors of legged locomotion on stationary terrain have been extensively analyzed using a simplified dynamic model called the spring-loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model. However, legged locomotion on dynamic platforms has not been thoroughly investigated even by using a simplified dynamic model such as SLIP. In this paper, we present the modeling, analysis, and control of a SLIP model running on dynamic platforms. Three types of dynamic platforms are considered: (a) a sinusoidally excited rigid-body platform; (b) a spring-supported rigid-body platform; and (c) an Euler–Bernoulli beam. These platforms capture some important domains of real-world locomotion terrain (e.g., harmonically excited platforms, suspended floors, and bridges). The interaction force model and the equations of motion of the SLIP-platform systems are derived. Numerical simulations of SLIP running on the three types of dynamic platforms reveal that the platform movement can destabilize the SLIP even when the initial conditions of the SLIP motion are within the domain of attraction of its motion on flat, stationary platforms. A simple control strategy that can sustain the forward motion of a SLIP on dynamic platforms is then synthesized. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in sustaining SLIP motion on dynamic platforms is validated through simulations.
