Evolutionary Algorithm Embedded With Bump-Hunting for Constrained Design Optimization

Abstract Real-world design optimization problems commonly entail constraints that must be satisfied for the design to be viable. Mathematically, the constraints divide the search space into feasible (where all constraints are satisfied) and infeasible (where at least one constraint is violated) regions. The presence of multiple constraints, constricted and/or disconnected feasible regions, non-linearity and multi-modality of the underlying functions could significantly slow down the convergence of evolutionary algorithms (EA). Since each design evaluation incurs some time/computational cost, it is of significant interest to improve the rate of convergence to obtain competitive solutions with relatively fewer design evaluations. In this study, we propose to accomplish this using two mechanisms: (a) more intensified search by identifying promising regions through “bump-hunting,” and (b) use of infeasibility-driven ranking to exploit the fact that optimal solutions are likely to be located on constraint boundaries. Numerical experiments are conducted on a range of mathematical benchmarks and empirically formulated engineering problems, as well as a simulation-based wind turbine design optimization problem. The proposed approach shows up to 53.48% improvement in median objective values and up to 69.23% reduction in cost of identifying a feasible solution compared with a baseline EA.

Box’s Complex method for direct search has shown promise when applied to simulation based optimization. In direct search methods, like Box’s Complex method, the search starts with a set of points, where each point is a solution to the optimization problem. In the Complex method the number of points must be at least one plus the number of variables. However, in order to avoid premature termination and increase the likelihood of finding the global optimum more points are often used at the expense of the required number of evaluations. The idea in this paper is to gradually remove points during the optimization in order to achieve an adaptive Complex method for more efficient design optimization. The proposed method shows encouraging results when compared to the Complex method with fix number of points and a quasi-Newton method.

The scale and complexity of search space are important factors deciding the solving difficulty of an optimization problem. The information of solution space may lead searching to optimal solutions. Based on this, an algorithm for combinatorial optimization is proposed. This algorithm makes use of the good solutions found by intelligent algorithms, contracts the search space and partitions it into one or several optimal regions by backbones of combinatorial optimization solutions. And optimization of small-scale problems is carried out in optimal regions. Statistical analysis is not necessary before or through the solving process in this algorithm, and solution information is used to estimate the landscape of search space, which enhances the speed of solving and solution quality. The algorithm breaks a new path for solving combinatorial optimization problems, and the results of experiments also testify its efficiency.

Global optimization problems are mostly solved using search methods. Therefore, decreasing the search space can increase the efficiency of their solving. A widely exploited technique to reduce the search space is symmetry-breaking, which helps impose constraints on breaking existing symmetries. The present article deals with the airflow control optimization problem in an oscillating-water-column using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In an effort to ameliorate the efficiency of the PSO search, a symmetry-breaking technique has been implemented. The results of optimization showed that shrinking the search space helped to reduce the search time and ameliorate the efficiency of the PSO algorithm.

This paper proposes a design optimization method for machine products that is based on the decomposition of performance characteristics, or alternatively, extraction of simpler characteristics, to accommodate the specific features or difficulties of a particular design problem. The optimization problem is expressed using hierarchical constructions of the decomposed and extracted characteristics and the optimizations are sequentially repeated, starting with groups of characteristics having conflicting characteristics at the lowest hierarchical level and proceeding to higher levels. The proposed method not only effectively enables achieving optimum design solutions, but also facilitates deeper insight into the design optimization results, and aids obtaining ideas for breakthroughs in the optimum solutions. An applied example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Control and design optimization of hybrid electric powertrains is necessary to maximize the benefits of novel architectures. Previous studies have proposed multiple optimal and near-optimal control methods, approaches for design optimization, and ways to solve coupled design and control optimization problems for hybrid electric powertrains. This study presents control and design optimization of a novel hybrid electric powertrain architecture to evaluate its performance and potential using physics-based models for the electric machines, the battery and a near-optimal control, namely the equivalent consumption minimization strategy. Design optimization in this paper refers to optimizing the sizes of the powertrain components, i.e. electric machines, battery and final drive. The control and design optimization problem is formulated using nested approach with sequential quadratic programming as design optimization method. Metamodeling is applied to abstract the near-optimal powertrain control model to reduce the computational cost. Fuel economy, sizes of components, and consistency of city and highway fuel economy are reported to evaluate the performance of the powertrain designs. The results suggest an optimal powertrain design and control that grants good performance. The optimal design is shown to be robust and non-sensitive to slight component size changes when evaluated for the near-optimal control.

In the design optimization of robot arms, the use of simulation technologies for modeling and optimizing the objective functions is still challenging. The difficulty is not only associated with the large computational cost of high-fidelity structural simulations but also linked to the reasonable compromise between the multiple conflicting objectives of robot arms. In this paper we propose a surrogate-based evolutionary optimization (SBEO) method via a global optimization approach, which incorporates the response surface method (RSM) and multi-objective evolutionary algorithm by decomposition (the differential evolution (DE ) variant) (MOEA/D-DE) to tackle the shape design optimization problem of robot arms for achieving high speed performance. The computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools such as CAE solvers, computer-aided design (CAD) Inventor, and finite element method (FEM) ANSYS are first used to produce the design and assess the performance of the robot arm. The surrogate model constructed on the basis of Box–Behnken design is then used in the MOEA/D-DE, which includes the process of selection, recombination, and mutation, to optimize the robot arm. The performance of the optimized robot arm is compared with the baseline one to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results obtained for the adopted example show that the proposed method can not only significantly improve the robot arm performance and save computational cost but may also be deployed to solve other complex design optimization problems.

An algorithm based on free search is proposed for the combinatorial optimization problems. In this algorithm, a feasible solution is converted into a full permutation of all the elements and a transformation of one solution into another solution can be interpreted the transformation of one permutation into another permutation. Then, the algorithm is combined with intersection elimination. The discrete free search algorithm greatly improves the convergence rate of the search process and enhances the quality of the results. The experiment results on TSP standard data show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is increased by about 2.7% than that of the genetic algorithm.

The objective of this paper is twofold. First, an optimality test is presented to show that the optimality conditions for a separable two-level design optimization problem before and after its decomposition are the same. Second, based on identification of active constraints and exploitation of problem structure, a simple approach for calculating the gradient of a “second-level” problem is presented. This gradient is an important piece of information which is needed for solution of two-level design optimization problems. Three examples are given to demonstrate applications of the approach.

In engineering design optimization, evaluation of a single solution (design) often requires running one or more computationally expensive simulations. Surrogate assisted optimization (SAO) approaches have long been used for solving such problems, in which approximations/surrogates are used in lieu of computationally expensive simulations during the course of search. Existing SAO approaches often use the same type of approximation model to represent all objectives and constraints in all regions of the search space. The selection of a type of surrogate model over another is nontrivial and an a priori choice limits flexibility in representation. In this paper, we introduce a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (EA) with multiple adaptive spatially distributed surrogates. Instead of a single global surrogate, local surrogates of multiple types are constructed in the neighborhood of each offspring solution and a multi-objective search is conducted using the best surrogate for each objective and constraint function. The proposed approach offers flexibility of representation by capitalizing on the benefits offered by various types of surrogates in different regions of the search space. The approach is also immune to illvalidation since approximated and truly evaluated solutions are not ranked together. The performance of the proposed surrogate assisted multi-objective algorithm (SAMO) is compared with baseline nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and NSGA-II embedded with global and local surrogates of various types. The performance of the proposed approach is quantitatively assessed using several engineering design optimization problems. The numerical experiments demonstrate competence and consistency of SAMO.

Incorporating river basin simulation models in heuristic optimization algorithms can help modelers address complex, basin-scale water resource problems. We have developed a hybrid optimization-simulation model by linking a stretching particle swarm optimization (SPSO) algorithm and the MODSIM river basin decision support system (DSS), and have used the SPSO-MODSIM model to optimize water allocation at basin scale. Due to high computational cost of the SPSO-MODSIM model, we have, subsequently, used four meta-model types of artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), kriging and polynomial response functions, replacing the MODSIM DSS, in an adaptively learning meta-modeling approach. The performances of the meta-models are first compared in two Ackley and Dejong benchmark functions optimization problems, and the meta-models are then evaluated by solving the Atrak river basin water allocation optimization problem in Iran. The results demonstrate that independent of the meta-model type, the sequentially space-filling meta-modeling approach can improve the performance of meta-models in the course of optimization by adaptively locating the promising regions of the search space where more samples need to be generated. However, the ANN and SVM meta-models perform better than others in saving the number of costly, original objective function evaluations.
