1100-HP Gas Turbine for Marine Applications

The 1100 Saturn gas-turbine engine is a high-performance unit that uses a simple thermodynamic cycle. It is designed for both long life and low weight and has a weight-to-power ratio of 1.14 lb/hp. The engine is intended specifically for intermittent and continuous duty in marine and ground installations. The engine development program was backed by extensive development of individual components. The development and design of the engine are described in detail.

This paper summarizes the scope and results to date of a program initiated in 1974 to develop a high-performance, simple-cycle, 10,000-hp engine for application in gas compressor, mechanical drive, and generator set packages. Design philosophy, a detailed description, and component and engine development testing are covered. Future plans for the development program up to the point of production availability in 1978 are also outlined.

The Department of Defense and NASA have funded a major gas turbine development program, Integrated High Performance Turbine Engine Technology (IHPTET), to double the power density and fuel economy of gas turbines by the turn of the century. Seven major US gas turbine developers participated in this program. While the focus of IHPTET activity has been aircraft propulsion, the same underlying technology can be applied to water craft and terrestrial vehicle propulsion applications, such as the future main battle tank. For these applications, the gas turbines must be equipped with recuperators. Currently, there is no technology roadmap or set of goals to guide industry and government in the development of a next generation recuperator for such applications.

The Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) upgrades the current TF40B gas turbine engine and analog control system on the LCAC to an Enhanced TF40B (ETF40B) gas turbine with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. This upgrade and enhancement will provide additional engine horsepower, increased engine reliability, and modern digital engine control equipment to the LCAC. The success of the ETF40B engine development program has been an ongoing effort between the Navy, the LCAC craft builder Textron Marine & Land Systems (TM&LS), and the engine manufacturer Honeywell Engine and Systems. This paper will document and outline the differences between the TF40B and ETF40B and the efforts of the ETF40B 150 hour endurance qualification test.

This paper presents information on the NREC core engine development program. The subject engine is a 100-hp, two-shaft gas turbine that is the low-power end of a family of engines up to 500 hp, both nonregenerative and regenerative. The major goal of the program has been the development of a low-cost small gas turbine engine (less than $5/hp to produce in quantities of 15,000/yr). Other objectives include low emissions (meeting the anticipated EPA standards for the markets of interest), relatively high performance (design point SFC = 0.7 for the simple-cycle engine and 0.4 for the regenerative version), and relatively long life (10,000-hr life at design power and a minimum service period of 500 hr). Items specifically covered in this paper include the following: (a) A description of the core engine concept. Frame size, regenerative, recuperative, and air compressor versions are discussed. (b) A technical description of the core engine concept. The salient low-cost features are identified. (c) The development program results. Some of the engine performance and manufacturing cost analysis results are given.

This paper presents a brief description and several illustrations of a new concept of marine reversing gears that utilize high-performance differentially driven epicyclic gear arrangements. This new marine power transmission has the potential to offer high reliability, simplicity, light weight, high mechanical efficiency, compactness, and technological compatibility with aircraft derivative marine gas turbine engines. Further, this new reversing gear minimizes the danger of driving the free turbine in reverse as might be the case with conventional parallel shaft reversing gear arrangements. To illustrate the weight reduction potential, a modern naval ship propulsion system utilizing an aircraft derivative gas turbine engine as the prime mover in conjunction with a conventional parallel shaft reversing gear can be compared to the subject reversing gear differential. A typical 18,642 kW (25,000 hp) marine gas turbine engine might weigh approximately 5000 kg (11,000 lb) and a conventional marine technology parallel shaft reversing gear might weigh on the order of 90,000 to 136,000 kg (200,000 to 300,000 lb). Using gear technology derived from the aircraft industry, a functionally similar differentially driven marine reversing gear might weigh approximately 13,600 kg (30,000 lb).

Recent studies related to fuel economy in air transport conducted in our country and abroad show that the use of recuperative heat exchangers in aviation gas turbine engines can significantly, by up to 20...30%, reduce fuel consumption. Until recently, the use of cycles with heat recovery in aircraft gas turbine engines was restrained by a significant increase in the mass of the power plant due to the installation of a heat exchanger. Currently, there is a technological opportunity to create compact, light, high-efficiency heat exchangers for use on aircraft without compromising their performance. An important target in the design of engines with heat recovery is to select the parameters of the working process that provide maximum efficiency of the aircraft system. The article focused on setting of the optimization problem and the choice of rational parameters of the thermodynamic cycle parameters of a gas turbine engine with a recuperative heat exchanger. On the basis of the developed method of multi-criteria optimization the optimization of thermodynamic cycle parameters of a helicopter gas turbine engine with a ANSAT recuperative heat exchanger was carried out by means of numerical simulations according to such criteria as the total weight of the engine and fuel required for the flight, the specific fuel consumption of the aircraft for a ton- kilometer of the payload. The results of the optimization are presented in the article. The calculation of engine efficiency indicators was carried out on the basis of modeling the flight cycle of the helicopter, taking into account its aerodynamic characteristics. The developed mathematical model for calculating the mass of a compact heat exchanger, designed to solve optimization problems at the stage of conceptual design of the engine and simulation of the transport helicopter flight cycle is presented. The developed methods and models are implemented in the ASTRA program. It is shown that optimal parameters of the working process of a gas turbine engine with a free turbine and a recuperative heat exchanger depend significantly on the heat exchanger effectiveness. The possibility of increasing the efficiency of the engine due to heat regeneration is also shown.

A small semi-closed gas turbine was designed, fabricated, and tested to demonstrate the cycle the cycle feasibility with exhaust gas recirculation. The demonstrator unit comprised a low pressure spool compressor and turbine supercharging a high pressure spool compressor and turbine, whose exhaust passed through a recuperator, and was subsequently split, one half being recirculated to the high pressure spool compressor inlet via an intercooler, and the remaining half expanded across the low pressure spool turbine. The design and fabrication phases proceeded on schedule but commencement of engine development testing encountered mechanical difficulties. These were eventually resolved and shakedown testing of the demonstrator accomplished prior to final contractual delivery. The demonstration program was funded under a NASA LeRc contract NAS3-27396.
