Abstract The expectations of computer tools to support the conceptual design phase are not yet met. An experimental approach to discover the use of information in conceptual design will give a realistic insight of the information requirements. This can be used to specify future computer support systems. A method to observe the use of information in a conceptual design process has recently been developed. The method has been tested and fine-tuned through the observation of 10 design sessions. Valuable empirical data resides from this experiment. Data has been analyzed in several perspectives. This paper presents the results of the activity/information analysis of the experiment in relation with the quality of the design concept. For the latter a rating system has been defined to quantify this. We have found a significant positive correlation of the amount of information that is communicated and the quality of the design. Furthermore a discussion is given on the relation between information and the activities of the designer. Analysis activities are more communication intensive compared to synthesis and evaluation tasks.

When designing a product, the earlier the potential risks can be identified, the more costs can be saved, as it is easier to modify a design in its early stages. Several methods exist to analyze the risk in a system, but all require a mature design. However, by applying the concept of “common interfaces” to a functional model and utilizing a historical knowledge base, it is possible to analyze chains of failures during the conceptual phase of product design. This paper presents a method based on these “common interfaces” to be used in conjunction with other methods such as Risk in Early Design in order to allow a more complete risk analysis during the conceptual design phase. Finally, application of this method is demonstrated in a design setting by applying it to a thermal control subsystem.

From Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) perspective it is important to have information regarding the type of care needed by bedridden elderly people (BEP) living in their homes, in order to support independence, autonomy and maximize their quality of life. Some basic tasks as eating, taking a bath and the hygiene cares may be difficult to execute, regarding that almost always the main caregiver is the other element of the couple (husband or wife). Following this trend, the development of mechatronic devices is of upmost importance in creating solutions to facilitate these tasks. This paper presents the conceptual design of a mechatronic system especially devoted to the assistance during the bath of BEP. Issues as reducing the number of caregivers to only one to assist the bath and reducing the system’s handling complexity (because most of the time it will be used by an aged person) are considered. Visits to rehabilitation centers and hospitals, and respective working meetings, are considered in the development of the proposed mechatronic system.

The development of machines or plants is a very individual process. Within the conceptual design phase, many different variants have to be discussed with customers and adapted to their needs. For a decent evaluation of the different variants, many parameters beyond static values such as costs are important. Term-dependent values like cycle times and energy efficiency also have to be investigated. This paper presents a method for the automated generation of plant variants based on simulation.

Westinghouse has been a strong supporter of Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) principles during product design and development. This is exemplified by the actions taken during the design of the 501F engine to ensure that high reliability and availability was achieved. By building upon past designs, utilizing those features most beneficial, and improving other areas, a highly reliable product was developed. A full range of RAM tools and techniques were utilized to achieve this result, including reliability allocations, modelling, and effective redesign of critical components. These activities began during the conceptual design phase and will continue throughout the life cycle of these engines until they are decommissioned.

Uncertainty in design and simulation affects the quality of product directly during the process of MDO, which should be considered to help designers to make the design decisions, especially at conceptual design stage. In traditional approaches, this uncertainty is ignored in the hope that it is not significant to the decision making. In this investigation, firstly, three main uncertainties in MDO of conceptual design are pointed out and carefully analyzed. Then, an innovative methodology integrating extract knowledge and probabilistic method to manage these uncertainties is presented. Considering practical application and eliminating the uncertainty in configuration, we propose a promising method combining Fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCM) and Rough Sets theory (RST) to deduce the configuration rule. Furthermore, probabilistic kriging model is utilized as an approximation model to reduce global computational expense of complex product. Sensitivity analysis (SA) is used to reduce uncertainty of inputs of simulation, and mean square error (MSE) is employed to assess model error to reduce model uncertainty. Finally, the validity and necessity of this methodology are demonstrated through the conceptual design of bulk carrier.
