This paper describes a reduced NOx diffusion flame combustor that has been developed for the MS5002 gas turbine. Laboratory tests have shown that when firing with natural gas, without water or steam injection, NOx emissions from the new combustor are about 40% lower than NOx emissions from the standard MS5002 combustor. CO emissions are virtually unchanged at base load, but increase at part load conditions. The laboratory results were confirmed in 1997 by a commercial demonstration test at a British Petroleum site in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The standard MS5002 gas turbine is equipped with a conventional, swirl stabilized diffusion flame combustion system. The twelve standard combustors in an MS5002 turbine are cylindrical cans, approximately 27 cm (10.5 inches) in diameter and 112 cm (44 inches) long. A small, annular, vortex generator surrounds the single fuel nozzle that is centered at the inlet to each can. The walls of the cans are louvered for cooling, and contain an array of mixing and dilution holes that provide the air needed to complete combustion and dilute the burned gas to the desired turbine inlet temperature. The new, reduced NOx emissions combustor (referred to as a “lean head end”, or LHE, combustor) retains all of the key features of the conventional combustor: the only significant difference is the arrangement of the mixing and dilution holes in the cylindrical combustor can. By optimizing the number, diameter, and location of these holes, NOx emissions were substantially reduced. The materials of construction, fuel nozzle, and total combustor air flow were unchanged. The differences in NOx emissions between the standard and LHE combustors, as well as the variations in NOx emissions with firing temperature, were well correlated using turbulent flame length arguments. Details of this correlation are also presented.

The effect of inlet temperature, pressure, air flowrate and fuel-to-air ratio on NOx emissions from gas turbine combustors has received considerable attention in recent years. A number of semi-empirical and empirical correlations relating these variables to NOx emissions have appeared in the literature. They differ both in fundamental assumptions and in their predictions. In the present work, these simple NOx correlations are compared to each other and to experimental data. A review of existing experimental data shows that an adequate data base does not exist to evaluate properly the various NOx correlations. Recommendations are proposed to resolve this problem in the future.

As government regulations become increasingly strict with regards to combustion pollutant emissions, new gas turbine combustor designs must produce lower NOx while also maintaining acceptable combustor operability. The design and implementation of an efficient fuel/air premixer is paramount to achieving low emissions. Options for improving the design of a natural gas fired heavy-duty gas turbine partially premixed fuel nozzle have been considered in the current study. In particular, the study focused on fuel injection and pilot/main interaction at high pressure and high inlet temperature. NOx emissions results have been reported and analyzed for a baseline nozzle first. Available experience is shared in this paper in the form of a NOx correlative model, giving evidence of the consistency of current results with past campaigns. Subsequently, new fuel nozzle premixer designs have been investigated and compared, mainly in terms of NOx emissions performance. The operating range of investigation has been preliminarily checked by means of a flame stability assessment. Adequate margin to lean blow out and thermo-acoustic instabilities onset has been found while also maintaining acceptable CO emissions. NOx emission data were collected over a variety of fuel/air ratios and pilot/main splits for all the fuel nozzle configurations. Results clearly indicated the most effective design option in reducing NOx. In addition, the impact of each design modification has been quantified and the baseline correlative NOx emissions model calibrated to describe the new fuel nozzles behavior. Effect of inlet air pressure has been evaluated and included in the models, allowing the extensive use of less costly reduced pressure test campaigns hereafter. Although the observed effect of combustor pressure drop on NOx is not dominant for this particular fuel nozzle, sensitivity has been performed to consolidate gathered experience and to make the model able to evaluate even small design changes affecting pressure drop.

Nowadays, the establishment of IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) plants, prompts a growing interest in synthetic fuels for gas turbine based power generation. This interest has as direct consequence the need for understanding of flashback phenomena for premixed systems operated with H2-rich gases. This is due to the different properties of H2 (e.g. reactivity and diffusivity) with respect to CH4 which lead to higher flame speeds in the case of syngases (mixtures of H2-CO). This paper presents the results of experiments at gas turbine like conditions (pressure up to 15 bar, 0.2 < Φ < 0.7, 577K < T0 < 674K) aimed to determine flashback limits and their dependence on the combustion parameters (pressure, inlet temperature and inlet velocity). For the experimental facility used for this work the back propagation of the flame is believed to happen into the boundary layer of the fuel/air duct. Flashback propensity was found to have an appreciable dependence on pressure and inlet temperature while the effects of inlet velocity variations are weak. Explanations for the dependence on these three parameters, based on consideration on laminar and turbulent flame speed data (from modeling and experiments), are proposed. Within the frame of this work, in order to avoid major damages, the experimental facility was equipped with an automatic control system for flashback described in the paper. The control system is able to detect flame propagation into the fuel/air supply, arrest it and restore safe operating conditions by moving the flame out of the fuel/air section without blowing it out. This avoids destruction of components (burner/mixing) and time consuming shut downs of the test rig.

The most effective technologies currently available for controlling NOx emissions from heavy-duty industrial gas turbines are either diluent injection in the combustor reaction zone, or lean premixed Dry Low NOx (DLN) combustion. For ultra low emissions requirements, these must be combined with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) DeNOx systems in the gas turbine exhaust. An alternative technology for achieving comparable emissions levels with the potential for lower capital investment and operating cost is catalytic combustion of lean premixed fuel and air within the gas turbine. The design of a catalytic combustion system using natural gas fuel has been prepared for the GE model MS9OOIE gas turbine. This machine has a turbine inlet temperature to the first rotating stage of over 1100°C and produces approximately 105 MW electrical output in simple cycle operation. The 508 mm diameter catalytic combustor designed for this gas turbine was operated at full-scale conditions in tests conducted in 1992 and 1994. The combustor was operated for twelve hours during the 1994 test and demonstrated very low NOx emissions from the catalytic reactor. The total exhaust NOx level was approximately 12–15 ppmv and was produced almost entirely in the preburner ahead of the reactor. A small quantity of steam injected into the preburner reduced the NOx emissions to 5–6 ppmv. Development of the combustion system has continued with the objectives of reducing CO and UHC emissions, understanding the parameters affecting reactor stability and spatial non-uniformities which were observed at low inlet temperature, and improving the structural integrity of the reactor system to a level required for commercial operation of gas turbines. Design modifications were completed and combustion hardware was fabricated for additional full-scale tests of the catalytic combustion system in March 1995 and January 1996. This paper presents a discussion of the combustor design, the catalytic reactor design and the results of full-scale testing of the improved combustor at MS9OOIE cycle conditions in the March 1995 and January 1996 tests. Major improvements in performance were achieved with CO and UHC emissions of 10 ppmv and 0 ppmv at base load conditions. This ongoing program will lead to two additional full-scale combustion system tests in 1996. The results of these tests will be available for discussion at the June 1996 Conference in Birmingham.

The scale up of jet shear layer low NOx concepts for compact gas turbine applications is considered using natural gas as the fuel with all experiments at one atmosphere pressure and 600K air inlet temperature. A 76mm diameter cylindrical combustor with 4 round jet shear layers was compared with a near double scale combustor with 140mm diameter and 4 round jet shear layers with the same total blockage as for the smaller combustor. This is compared with 16 round jet shear layers of the same diameter as for the smaller combustor. The shear layer air holes were fuelled by eight radial inward fuel injection holes in each shear layer jet. All three designs had acceptable combustion efficiencies, but the NOx emissions were considerably higher for the 4 shear layer design in the larger combustion. When the same shear layer hole size was used and the number increased in the larger combustor the NOx emissions were identical. Changing the shape of the hole from circulat to slot for the same area, considerably reduced the NOx in the four hole 76mm combustor, but had little effect on the 16 hole 140mm combustor. Fuel staging within the array of shear layers was successfully demonstrated for four levels of fuel staging. There was some intermixing of air from the unfuelled jets, but this had only a small effect on the combustion efficiency and flame stability. A practical range of simulated power turndown was demonstrated with little NOx penalty. This was achieved with no wall between the staged shear layer regions and hence leads to very compact combustor designs.

The semi–empirical characteristic time model (CTM) has been used previously to correlate and predict emissions data from conventional diffusion flame, gas turbine combustors. The form of the model equation was derived for NOx emissions from laboratory flameholders and then extended to conventional gas turbine combustors. The model relates emissions to the characteristic times of distinct combustion subprocesses, with empirically determined model constants. In this paper, a new model is developed for lean premixed (LP) NOx emissions from a perforated plate flameholder combustor burning propane fuel. Several modifications to the diffusion flame CTM were required, including a new activation energy and a more complicated dependence on combustor pressure. Appropriate model constants were determined from the data, and the correlation results are reasonable. An attempt was made to validate the new model with LP NOx data for a different but geometrically similar flameholder operating at lower pressures. The predictions are good for the low equivalence ratio data. However, a systematic error in the reported equivalence ratios may be adversely affecting the predictions of the higher equivalence ratio data through the calculated adiabatic flame temperature.

Research and development project of ceramic gas turbines (CGT) was started in 1988 promoted by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in Japan. The target of the CGT project is development of a 300kW-class ceramic gas turbine with a 42 % thermal efficiency and a turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of 1350°C. Three types of CGT engines are developed in this project. One of the CGT engines, which is called CGT302, is a recuperated two-shaft gas turbine for co-generation use. In this paper, we describe the research and development of a combustor for the CGT302. The project requires a combustor to exhaust lower pollutant emissions than the Japanese regulation level. In order to reduce NOx emissions and achieve high combustion efficiency, lean premixed combustion technology is adopted. Combustion rig tests were carried out using this combustor. In these tests we measured the combustor performance such as pollutant emissions, combustion efficiency, combustor inlet/outlet temperature, combustor inlet pressure and pressure loss through combustor. Of course air flow rate and fuel flow rate are controlled and measured, respectively. The targets for the combustor such as NOx emissions and combustion efficiency were accomplished with sufficient margin in these combustion rig tests. In addition, we report the results of the tests which were carried out to examine effects of inlet air pressure on NOx emissions here.
