The effects of combustion and feeding conditions on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and PCDD/F formation and appearance in the emissions at the stack during sludge incineration are discussed in this paper. Partitioning in the solid streams of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn is also analyzed. Tests were performed on a demonstrative plant equipped with a fluidized bed furnace (FBF) using sewage sludge either as is or spiked with chlorinated organic compounds (tetrachloroethylene or a mixture of tetrachloroethylene, chlorobenzene and toluene) to study the chlorine effect on the presence of micropollutants in the different streams. Exhaust gases were sampled both before and after the treatment system (bag house and wet scrubber). In the untreated flue gas the highest values of PCDD/F and PAH were detected when the afterburning chamber was not in use or operating at low temperatures. Operation of the afterburning chamber at temperature higher than 850–900 °C was sufficient to keep organic micropollutants concentrations in the untreated flue gas at reasonably low levels. No significant correlation of the operating conditions with emissions at the stack was found. High copper concentration in the feed enhanced PCDD/F formation, with exception of tests carried out with high afterburning temperature. The homologue profile of PCDD/F and PAH depended on test conditions. Preferential accumulation of heavy metals in the filter ash with respect to cyclone ash was quantified in terms of an enrichment factor. Out of the seven metals considered, only Cd and Pb undergo significant enrichment in the filter ash. The enrichment increased with increasing chlorine content of the feed. In contrast, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Zn behaved as refractory (non-volatile) elements even at high chlorine dosage. In accordance with the widely accepted hypothesis that metal enrichment is due to metal vaporization in the combustion chamber and subsequent condensation onto the filter ash particles, a thermodynamic model of the combustion process was able to satisfactorily predict the different metal behavior and the effect of chlorine dosage on metal enrichment.

In view of the current status of catalytic cracking flue gas treatment, it is necessary to study the flow environment of desulfurization ash particles, which are a type of Geldart C particle, in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) for semi-dry flue gas desulphurization using CFB technology. This study investigated the flow characteristics of desulphurization ash particles in a riser with an inner diameter of 70 mm and a height of 12.6 m, at a gas velocity of 4–7 m/s and a solids circulation rate of 15–45 kg/m2·s. The solids holdup in the axial distribution is relatively high near the bottom of the riser, and gradually decreases as the riser height increases, with a stable value from the middle to the top of the riser. In the radial distribution, the solids holdup of desulfurization ash particles is low in the center and high in the wall region. Within the above operating conditions, the solids holdup ranges from 0.008 to 0.025. The particle-based Archimedes number has a linear relationship with the solids holdup at all operating conditions.

To demonstrate that sewage sludge incineration could be a safe operation if well conducted and that hazardous compounds could also be disposed of without problems in sludge incinerators plants, a research program has been set up by the Italian Water Research Institute on a demonstrative scale plant where a completely circulating fluidised bed furnace and a rotary kiln furnace can operate alternatively. In this paper results of tests performed by a fluidised bed furnace on sewage sludge spiked with highly chlorinated compounds under different operating conditions are presented. A deep investigation on micropollutants formation has been made at different sampling points: before and after bag house filter, and at the chimney. The experimental data show that concentrations of PCDDs+PCDFs (TE) and of PAHs do not strictly depend on the operation of the afterburning chamber and that a complete compliance with the European and Italian standards on the emissions were always achieved even in the most critical conditions investigated.

Sludge-coal water slurry (SCWS) can be produced by mixing coal water slurry (CWS) with sewage sludge according to differenct ratio. This paper focuses on the combustive feasibility of SCWS in a commercial circulating fluidized bed, and on the emission characteristics of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in flue gas fly ash and bottom ash during combustion of SCWS. The results indicated that incineration can do very well with the temperature 1000 degree, sludge coal water slurry (SCWS) can be effective in improving sludge incineration rate, if the proportion of sludge is 20%~30%,amounts of PCBs is relatively small in flue gas fly ash and bottom ash. So the best burning rate is 20%-30%. Although incineration flue gas fly ash and bottom ash emission standard don't have PCBs regulations, but since PCBs are toxic organic pollutants, it should be strictly regulated.

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate combustion characteristics of biomass (willow, Salix viminalis) burnt in air and O2/CO2 mixtures in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB). Air and oxy-combustion characteristics of wooden biomass in CFB were supplemented by the thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TGA/DTA). The results of conducted CFB and TGA tests show that the composition of the oxidizing atmosphere strongly influences the combustion process of biomass fuels. Replacing N2 in the combustion environment by CO2 caused slight delay (higher ignition temperature and lower maximum mass loss rate) in the combustion of wooden biomass. The combustion process in O2/CO2 mixtures at 30% and 40% O2 is faster and shorter than that at lower O2 concentrations.

In a circulating fluidized bed boiler, the large thermal mass and flow characteristics of the solids strongly affect the transient response of the circulating fluidized bed loop temperature, which determines the heat transfer rate to steam flow. Therefore, it is essential to interpret the dynamic response of the solid behavior in the circulating fluidized bed loop for the stable and efficient operation of the circulating fluidized bed boiler. In this study, the dynamic simulation of the solid behavior along with the flue gas flow in a circulating fluidized bed loop was performed by applying the core-annulus approach for the solid-gas flow inside the furnace and selected models for other physical phenomena of the fluidized bed. The circulating fluidized bed loop of a commercial boiler was selected as the target system. Especially, the model simulates the characteristics of the solid behavior, such as the local solid mass distribution, and the solid flow inside the furnace and the circulating solid according to the various operating conditions. These aspects are difficult to measure and quantify in a real power plant. In this paper, the simulated furnace temperature behavior as the representative performance parameter of the circulating fluidized bed loop was discussed along with the qualitative operation experiences reported in the literature. The operating conditions include the feed rate of fuel and air, the particle size, the solid inventory and the solid circulation rate. Furnace temperature behavior was reproduced through the simulation for each operating case in the literature and was analyzed with the solid behavior along with the combustion rate and heat transfer rate of the circulating fluidized bed loop. The simulation enables quantitative evaluation of the effect of the solid behavior on the temperatures of the furnace and return part in the various operating conditions.
