Visualization of R410A Flowing in Copper and Stainless Steel Dimpled Tubes Enhanced by Petal-Shaped Patterns Under Evaporation Conditions

Abstract Experimental investigations were conducted to study the heat transfer characteristics and flow patterns of R410A during evaporation in three horizontal tubes having the same outside diameter of 12.70 mm and 180 mm in length. The tested tubes contain two tubes with three-dimensional enhanced surface structures (Cu-1EHT and SS-1EHT), and one equivalent smooth tube. This experiment was done at an evaporation temperature of 6 °C and mass flux from 100 to 200 kg/(m2·s) for vapor qualities varying from 0.2 to 0.8. For all the tube tested, flow pattern observations were obtained using a high-speed camera, and the impact of the actual flow regime on heat transfer was discussed. Results indicated that the transition from annular flow to intermittent flow began at a lower vapor quality for two enhanced tubes when compared to the smooth tube. Accordingly, both the Cu-1EHT tube and the SS-1EHT tube exhibited a superior performance than the smooth tube. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient of Cu-1EHT tube is higher than that of the stainless steel one, mainly due to the larger thermal conductivity of wall material.

One dimensional wave-action engine models have become an essential tool within engine development including stages of component selection, understanding system interactions and control strategy development. Simple turbocharger models are seen as a weak link in the accuracy of these simulation tools and advanced models have been proposed to account for phenomena including heat transfer. In order to run within a full engine code, these models are necessarily simple in structure yet are required to describe a highly complex 3D problem. This paper aims to assess the validity of one of the key assumptions in simple heat transfer models, namely, that the heat transfer between the compressor casing and intake air occurs only after the compression process. Initially a sensitivity study was conducted on a simple lumped capacity thermal model of a turbocharger. A new partition parameter was introduced αA, which divides the internal wetted area of the compressor housing into pre and post compression. The sensitivity of heat fluxes to αA was quantified with respect to the sensitivity to turbine inlet temperature (TIT). At low speeds, the TIT was the dominant effect on compressor efficiency whereas at high speed αA had a similar influence to TIT. However, modelling of the conduction within the compressor housing using an additional thermal resistance caused changes in heat flows of less than 10%. Three dimensional CFD analysis was undertaken using a number of cases approximating different values of αA. It was seen that when considering a case similar to αA=0, meaning that heat transfer on the compressor side is considered to occur only after the compression process, significant temperature could build up in the impeller area of the compressor housing, indicating the importance of the pre-compression heat path. The 3D simulation was used to estimate a realistic value for αA which was suggested to be between 0.15 and 0.3. Using a value of this magnitude in the lumped capacitance model showed that at low speed there would be less than 1% point effect on apparent efficiency which would be negligible compared to the 8% point seen as a result of TIT. In contrast, at high speeds, the impact of αA was similar to that of TIT, both leading to approximately 1% point apparent efficiency error.

AbstractThe present investigation deals with the steady three-dimensional flow and heat transfer of nanofluids due to stretching sheet in the presence of magnetic field and heat source. Three types of water based nanoparticles namely, copper (Cu), aluminium oxide (Al2O3), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) are considered in this study. The temperature dependent variable thermal conductivity and thermal radiation has been introduced in the energy equation. Using suitable similarity transformations the dimensional non-linear expressions are converted into dimensionless system and are then solved numerically by Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg scheme along with well-known shooting technique. The impact of various flow parameters on axial and transverse velocities, temperature, surface frictional coefficients and rate of heat transfer coefficients are visualized both in qualitative and quantitative manners in the vicinity of stretching sheet. The results reviled that the temperature and velocity of the fluid rise with increasing values of variable thermal conductivity parameter. Also, the temperature and normal velocity of the fluid in case of Cu-water nanoparticles is more than that of Al2O3- water nanofluid. On the other hand, the axial velocity of the fluid in case of Al2O3- water nanofluid is more than that of TiO2nanoparticles. In addition, the current outcomes are matched with the previously published consequences and initiate to be a good contract as a limiting sense.

The impacts of unsteady flow research activities on flow simulation methods used in the turbine design process are assessed. Results from experimental investigations that identify the impact of periodic unsteadiness on the time-averaged flows in turbines and results from numerical simulations obtained by using three-dimensional unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes indicate that some of the unsteady flow features can be fairly accurately predicted. Flow parameters that can be modeled with existing steady CFD codes are distinguished from those that require unsteady codes.

In the experiment, we use pulsed laser to conduct discrete scratching on Ni-containing stainless steel protective coatings to test residual stress situation after the matrix is scratched; then to analyze the the impact of the impact stress wave on coating - substrate bonding strength according to the test results, finally to infer the laser power density range within which it occurs coating failure. The study shows that: after laser discrete scratching, the residual stress of the center of the laser-loaded point on matrix surface gradually reduces when the pulsed laser power density increases. The matrix produces a corresponding residual compressive stress under the laser power density reaches a certain value. The actual failure threshold values are 12.006 GW/cm2, 11.829GW/cm2 and 12.193GW/cm2 measured by the three-dimensional topography instrument testing the discrete scratch point of three groups of samples and verified by using a microscope

Modern lean burn combustors now employ aggressive swirlers to enhance fuel-air mixing and improve flame stability. The flow at combustor exit can therefore have high residual swirl. A good deal of research concerning the flow within the combustor is available in open literature. The impact of swirl on the aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of an HP turbine stage is not well understood, however. A combustor swirl simulator has been designed and commissioned in the Oxford Turbine Research Facility (OTRF), previously located at QinetiQ, Farnborough UK. The swirl simulator is capable of generating an engine-representative combustor exit swirl pattern. At the turbine inlet plane, yaw and pitch angles of over ±40 deg have been simulated. The turbine research facility used for the study is an engine scale, short duration, rotating transonic turbine, in which the nondimensional parameters for aerodynamics and heat transfer are matched to engine conditions. The research turbine was the unshrouded MT1 design. By design, the center of the vortex from the swirl simulator can be clocked to any circumferential position with respect to HP vane, and the vortex-to-vane count ratio is 1:2. For the current investigation, the clocking position was such that the vortex center was aligned with the vane leading edge (every second vane). Both the aligned vane and the adjacent vane were characterized. This paper presents measurements of HP vane surface and end wall heat transfer for the two vane positions. The results are compared with measurements conducted without swirl. The vane surface pressure distributions are also presented. The experimental measurements are compared with full-stage three-dimensional unsteady numerical predictions obtained using the Rolls Royce in-house code Hydra. The aerodynamic and heat transfer characterization presented in this paper is the first of its kind, and it is hoped to give some insight into the significant changes in the vane flow and heat transfer that occur in the current generation of low NOx combustors. The findings not only have implications for the vane aerodynamic design, but also for the cooling system design.

The present study compares measured and computed heat transfer coefficients for high-speed boundary layer nozzle flows under engine Reynolds number conditions (U∞=230 ÷ 880 m/s, Re* = 0.37 ÷ 1.07 × 106). Experimental data have been obtained by heat transfer measurements in a two-dimensional, nonsymmetric, convergent–divergent nozzle. The nozzle wall is convectively cooled using water passages. The coolant heat transfer data and nozzle surface temperatures are used as boundary conditions for a three-dimensional finite-element code, which is employed to calculate the temperature distribution inside the nozzle wall. Heat transfer coefficients along the hot gas nozzle wall are derived from the temperature gradients normal to the surface. The results are compared with numerical heat transfer predictions using the low-Reynolds-number k–ε turbulence model by Lam and Bremhorst. Influence of compressibility in the transport equations for the turbulence properties is taken into account by using the local averaged density. The results confirm that this simplification leads to good results for transonic and low supersonic flows.

This paper establishes a novel mathematical model for computing the plume flow field of a carrier-based aircraft engine. Its objective is to study the impact of jet exhaust gases with high temperature, high speed and high pressure on the jet blast deflector. The working condition of the nozzle of a fully powered on engine is first determined. The flow field of the exhaust jet is then numerically simulated at different deflection angle using the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the standard [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] turbulence method. Moreover, infra-red temperature tests are further carried out to test the temperature field when the jet blast deflector is at the [Formula: see text] deflection angle. The comparison between the simulation results and the experimental results show that the proposed computation model can perfectly describe the system. There is only 8–10% variation between them. A good verification is achieved. Moreover, the experimental results show that the jet blast deflector plays an outstanding role in driving the high-temperature exhaust gases. It is found that [Formula: see text] may be the best deflection angle to protect the deck and the surrounding equipment effectively. These data results provide a valuable basis for the design and layout optimization of the jet blast deflector and deck.

We present our recent study on spreading and solidification of micro-droplets of alumina impacting onto patterned surfaces textured by micron-size obstacles. We employed an in-house, three-dimensional computational tool that solves the flow and energy equations and takes into account the solidification. We investigated the spreading dynamics, heat transfer, and solidification of the droplets as a function of the height and spacing of the obstacles as well as the impact velocity. The results show that, independent of the obstacle height, the droplet assumes a disk-shape geometry when the obstacles are either packed tightly or are very distanced. The results at intermediate obstacle spacings exhibit the most significant deformations, where the droplet develops long fingers. A quantitative relationship shows the collapse of the final spread diameter of the droplet normalized by the obstacle spacing when plotted against the spacing for different impact velocity as well as the obstacle height.
