Complex Energy Systems Exploiting Solar Energy and Natural Gas Vaporization

The fossil fuel reserves are limited. In addition, usable energy supply has a considerable impact on the environment, even if some effects, which are usually alleged, are far from being fully established. Natural gas is often found in remote locations far from developed industrial nations. Where possible, the gas is transported by pipeline to the end user. However, where oceans separate the gas source and the user, or there are other difficulties, the only viable way to transport the gas is to convert it into liquid natural gas (LNG) and to convey it using insulated LNG tankers. This paper outlines the results of an examination of a complex system, employing solar energy, for the production of electrical energy and the vaporization and superheating of LNG. It is to be remarked that, differently from the usual combined systems, both the thermal source and the thermal sink are exergy sources.

Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands and has plenty of beautiful beaches and underwater spots which have great potential for maritime tourism. Tourism was ranked 3rd on Indonesia's foreign income and plays an important role for the country’s ecomony. Despite having potential advantages, the government has not yet maximized its efforts to develop the attractiveness of its maritime tourism. Beside the beautiful spots Indonesia is also blessed with all year long sun shine, which could be tapped as renewable and green energy as substitution to fossil fuel. Refer to these great advantages of natural resources the research was aimed to support the government’s program in developing its maritime tourism and to promote the use of green and renewable energy by designing a solar-powered tourism recreational boat which has 12 meters of length. The paper is focused on the design of solar energy and its electrical system, which includes conversion of solar energy to electrical energy and store it in the battery, the required electrical power is also predicted based on the appliances and equipment installed in the boat, the optimum attachment of solar panels on the boat structure is also calculated. All the methods and information we use are obtained from literature study, discussion with experts, and surveys to Jagur as solar-powered electric boat from Universitas Indonesia.

Energy transitions’ trend towards sustainable systems has prompted energy systems to shift from being fossil-fuel-based to rely on renewable energy. These transitions have led the power system to occupy the center of modern infrastructures, so assuring its security has become a priority for policy makers. This work presents a tool based on a multidimensional index, the Power System Security Index (PSIx), for the evaluation of policies affecting the security of the supply of electrical energy. The developed frame is applied to the current power system of Argentina, and it is compared to the system in year 2002. Availability of resources and infrastructure are the strengths of the country, while economic, governability, and research, development and innovation spheres leave room for improvement. The further incorporation of more economies to the study would substantially enrich the statistical analysis of the results.

Now, over 90% of energy is produced by fossil fuel including coal, oil and natural gas, etc. With the time go on and the same consumption rate of energy, the energy status of world will be more serious. So human being should be finding other cleanness energy in order to meet their need. The solar energy is a promising energy which can be realized in the future most experts believe. Firstly, the concept of SSPS is brought forward in this paper. Additionally, the status of energy consumption and the studying trend of space solar power system (SSPS) are described which comprise the key technologies of SSPS in need. Then the key materials of development of SSPS and some suggestions are presented.

It is well known that electrical power generation is the key factor for advances in industry, agriculture, technology, and standards of living. Also, a strong power industry with diverse energy sources is very important for a nation’s independence. In general, electrical energy can be generated from (1) burning mined and refined energy sources such as coal, natural gas, oil, and nuclear; and (2) harnessing energy sources such as hydro, biomass, wind, geothermal, solar, and wave power. Today, the main sources for electrical energy generation are (1) thermal power, primarily using coal and secondarily natural gas; (2) “large” hydraulic power from dams and rivers; and (3) nuclear power from various reactor designs. The balance of the energy sources is from using oil, biomass, wind, geothermal, and solar, which have a visible impact just in some countries. This paper presents the current status and role of the nuclear-power industry in the world with a comparison of nuclear-energy systems to other energy systems.

One major problem in the world is global warming that is now in the concern of some countries. Most countries are working on the usage of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, clean fuels like hydrogen and also increasing the efficiency of fossil fuel plant to help the global warming effect. Countries having high potential of solar energy and also natural gas as a source of hydrogen can use the finding of this research by developing usage of the solar energy converters and natural gas fuel cells for electric power plants. This paper discusses hybridization of renewable solar energy source with high efficient and clean usage of natural gas fossil fuel. Other aspects of this hybrid power plant is using the renewable energy sources as a reliable power supply with stand alone and grid connected capability which can increase network power quality. This paper also discusses the hybridization of solar energy as a renewable energy source and natural gas fuel cells as a fossil fuel and also improvement of power plant efficiency by using power electronics technology and electric energy storages.

It is well known that electrical-power generation plays the key role in advances in industry, agriculture, technology, and standard of living. Also, strong power industry with diverse energy sources is very important for a country's independence. In general, electrical energy can be mainly generated from: (1) nonrenewable energy sources (75.5% of the total electricity generation) such as coal (38.3%), natural gas (23.1%), oil (3.7%), and nuclear (10.4%); and (2) renewable energy sources (24.5%) such as hydro, biomass, wind, geothermal, solar, and marine power. Today, the main sources for electrical-energy generation are: (1) thermal power (61.4%)—primarily using coal and secondarily using natural gas; (2) “large” hydro-electric plants (16.6%); and (3) nuclear power (10.4%). The balance of the energy sources (11.6%) is from using oil, biomass, wind, geothermal, and solar, and has visible impact just in a few countries. This paper presents the current status of electricity generation in the world, various sources of industrial electricity generation and role of nuclear power with a comparison of nuclear-energy systems to other energy systems. A comparison of the latest data on electricity generation with those several years old shows that world usage of coal, gas, nuclear, and oil has decreased by 1–2%, but usage of renewables has increased by 1% for hydro and 2% for other renewable sources. Unfortunately, within last years, electricity generation with nuclear power has decreased from 14% before the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) severe accident in March 2011 to about 10%. Therefore, it is important to evaluate current status of nuclear-power industry and to make projections on near (5–10 yr) and far away (10–25 yr and beyond) future trends.
