The effect of the upstream wake on the blade heat transfer has been numerically examined. The geometry and the flow conditions of the first stage turbine blade of GE’s E3 engine with a tip clearance equal to 2% of the span was utilized. Based on numerical calculations of the vane, a set of wake boundary conditions were approximated which were subsequently imposed upon the downstream blade. This set consisted of the momentum and thermal wakes as well as the variation in modeled turbulence quantities of turbulence intensity and the length scale. Using a one blade periodic domain, the distributions of unsteady heat transfer rate on the turbine blade and its tip, as affected by the wake, were determined. Such heat transfer coefficient distribution was computed using the wall heat flux and the adiabatic wall temperature to desensitize the heat transfer coefficient to the wall temperature. For the determination of the wall heat flux and the adiabatic wall temperatures, two set of computations were required. The results were used in a phase-locked manner to compute the unsteady or steady heat transfer coefficients. It has been found that the unsteady wake has some effect on the distribution of the time averaged heat transfer coefficient on the blade and that this distribution is different from the distribution that is obtainable from a steady computation. This difference was found to be as large as 20 percent of the average heat transfer on the blade surface. On the tip surface, this difference is comparatively smaller and can be as large as four percent of the average.

Turbine rotor tips and casings are vulnerable to mechanical failures due to the extreme thermal loads they undergo during engine service. In addition to the heat flux variations during the engine transient operation, periodic unsteadiness occurs at every rotor passage, with amplitude dependent on the tip gap. The development of appropriate predictive tools and cooling schemes requires the precise understanding of the heat transfer mechanisms. The present paper analyses the nature of the overtip flow in transonic turbine rotors running at tight clearances and explores a methodology to determine the relevant flow parameters that model the heat transfer. Steady-state three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) calculations were performed to simulate engine-like conditions considering two rotor tip gaps, 0.1% and 1%, of the blade span. At tight tip clearance, the adiabatic wall temperature is no longer independent of the solid thermal boundary conditions. The adiabatic wall temperature predicted with the linear Newton's cooling law was observed to rise to unphysical levels in certain regions within the rotor tip gap, resulting in unreliable convective heat transfer coefficients (HTCs). This paper investigates different approaches to estimate the relevant flow parameters that drive the heat transfer. A novel four-coefficient nonlinear cooling law is proposed to model the effects of temperature-dependent gas properties and of the heat transfer history. The four-parameter correlation provided reliable estimates of the convective heat transfer descriptors for the 1% tip clearance case, but failed to model the tip heat transfer of the 0.1% tip gap rotor. The present study allows experimentalists to retrieve information on the gap flow temperature and convective HTC based on the use of wall heat flux measurements. The use of nonlinear cooling laws is sought to improve the evaluation of the rotor heat transfer data while enhancing the understanding of tight-clearance overtip flows.

In order to continue increasing the efficiency of gas turbines, an important effort is made on the thermal management of the turbine stage. In particular, understanding and accurately estimating the thermal loads in a vane passage is of primary interest to engine designers looking to optimize the cooling requirements and ensure the integrity of the components. This paper focuses on the measurement of endwall heat transfer in a vane passage with a three-dimensional (3D) airfoil shape and cylindrical endwalls. It also presents a comparison with predictions performed using an in-house developed Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solver featuring a specific treatment of the numerical smoothing using a flow adaptive scheme. The measurements have been performed in a steady state axial turbine facility on a novel platform developed for heat transfer measurements and integrated to the nozzle guide vane (NGV) row of the turbine. A quasi-isothermal boundary condition is used to obtain both the heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic wall temperature within a single measurement day. The surface temperature is measured using infrared thermography through small view ports. The infrared camera is mounted on a robot arm with six degrees of freedom to provide high resolution surface temperature and a full coverage of the vane passage. The paper presents results from experiments with two different flow conditions obtained by varying the mass flow through the turbine: measurements at the design point (ReCax=7.2×105) and at a reduced mass flow rate (ReCax=5.2×105). The heat transfer quantities, namely the heat transfer coefficient and the adiabatic wall temperature, are derived from measurements at 14 different isothermal temperatures. The experimental data are supplemented with numerical predictions that are deduced from a set of adiabatic and diabatic simulations. In addition, the predicted flow field in the passage is used to highlight the link between the heat transfer patterns measured and the vortical structures present in the passage.

Recent work, Van Treuren et al. (1993), has shown the transient method of measuring heat transfer under an array of impinging jets allows the determination of local values of adiabatic wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient over the complete surface of the target plate. Using this technique, an inline array of impinging jets has been tested over a range of average jet Reynolds numbers (10,000–40,000) and for three channel height to jet hole diameter ratios (1, 2, and 4). The array is confined on three sides and spent flow is allowed to exit in one direction. Local values are averaged and compared with previously published data in related geometries. The current data for a staggered array is compared to those from an inline array with the same hole diameter and pitch for an average jet Reynolds number of 10,000 and channel height to diameter ratio of one. A comparison is made between intensity and hue techniques for measuring stagnation point and local distributions of heat transfer. The influence of the temperature of the impingement plate through which the coolant gas flows on the target plate heat transfer has been quantified.

Determination of a scalable Nusselt number (based on “adiabatic heat transfer coefficient”) has been the primary objective of the most existing heat transfer experimental studies. Based on the assumption that the wall thermal boundary conditions do not affect the flow field, the thermal measurements were mostly carried out at near adiabatic condition without matching the engine realistic wall-to-gas temperature ratio (TR). Recent numerical studies raised a question on the validity of this conventional practice in some applications, especially for turbine blade. Due to the relatively low thermal inertia of the over-tip-leakage (OTL) flow within the thin clearance, the fluids' transport properties vary greatly with different wall thermal boundary conditions and the two-way coupling between OTL aerodynamics and heat transfer cannot be neglected. The issue could become more severe when the gas turbine manufacturers are making effort to achieve much tighter clearance. However, there has been no experimental evidence to back up these numerical findings. In this study, transient thermal measurements were conducted in a high-temperature linear cascade rig for a range of tip clearance ratio (G/S) (0.3%, 0.4%, 0.6%, and 1%). Surface temperature history was captured by infrared thermography at a range of wall-to-gas TRs. Heat transfer coefficient (HTC) distributions were obtained based on a conventional data processing technique. The profound influence of tip surface thermal boundary condition on heat transfer and OTL flow was revealed by the first-of-its-kind experimental data obtained in the present experimental study.

Heat transfer coefficients and the resulting heat flux reduction due to film cooling on a flat plate downstream a row of cylindrical holes are investigated. Highly resolved two dimensional heat transfer coefficient distributions were measured by means of infrared thermography and carefully corrected for local internal testplate conduction and radiation effects [1]. These locally acquired data are processed to lateral average heat transfer coefficients for a quantitative assessment. A wide range variation of the flow parameters blowing rate and density ratio as well as the geometrical parameters streamwise ejection angle and hole spacing is examined. The effects of these dominating parameters on the heat transfer augmentation from film cooling are discussed and interpreted with the help of highly resolved surface results of effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients presented earlier [2]. A new method of evaluating the heat flux reduction from film cooling is presented. From a combination of the lateral average of both the adiabatic effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient, the lateral average heat flux reduction is processed according to the new method. The discussion of the total effect of film cooling by means of the heat flux reduction reveals important characteristics and constraints of discrete hole ejection. The complete heat transfer data of all measurements are used as basis for a new correlation of lateral average heat transfer coefficients. This correlation combines the effects of all the dominating parameters. It yields a prediction of the heat transfer coefficient from the ejection position to far downstream, including effects of extreme blowing angles and hole spacing. The new correlation has a modular structure to allow for future inclusion of additional parameters. Together with the correlation of the adiabatic effectiveness it provides an immediate determination of the streamwise heat flux reduction distribution of cylindrical hole film cooling configurations.

In film cooling heat transfer analysis, one of the core concepts is to deem film cooled adiabatic wall temperature (Taw) as the driving potential for the actual heat flux over the film-cooled surface. Theoretically, the concept of treating Taw as the driving temperature potential is drawn from compressible flow theory when viscous dissipation becomes the heat source near the wall and creates higher wall temperature than in the flowing gas. But in conditions where viscous dissipation is negligible, which is common in experiments under laboratory conditions, the heat source is not from near the wall but from the main hot gas stream; therefore, the concept of treating the adiabatic wall temperature as the driving potential is subjected to examination. To help investigate the role that Taw plays, a series of computational simulations are conducted under typical film cooling conditions over a conjugate wall with internal flow cooling. The result and analysis support the validity of this concept to be used in the film cooling by showing that Taw is indeed the driving temperature potential on the hypothetical zero wall thickness condition, ie. Taw is always higher than Tw with underneath (or internal) cooling and the adiabatic film heat transfer coefficient (haf) is always positive. However, in the conjugate wall cases, Taw is not always higher than wall temperature (Tw), and therefore, Taw does not always play the role as the driving potential. Reversed heat transfer through the airfoil wall from downstream to upstream is possible, and this reversed heat flow will make Tw > Taw in the near injection hole region. Yet evidence supports that Taw can be used to correctly predict the heat flux direction and always result in a positive adiabatic heat transfer coefficient (haf). The results further suggest that two different test walls are recommended for conducting film cooling experiments: a low thermal conductivity material should be used for obtaining accurate Taw and a relative high thermal conductivity material be used for conjugate cooling experiment. Insulating a high-conductivity wall will result in Taw distribution that will not provide correct heat flux or haf values near the injection hole.

There are many engineering systems with working fluids which have properties varying significantly with temperature. This causes the effect of the wall heat flux on the velocity and temperature fields to become larger with respect to the constant property flows. In this study the effect of the wall heat flux on the entropy generation in the mixed turbulent convection heat transfer of a fluid flow with high property variations has been investigated. The local and total entropy generation is calculated. In addition, the region in which the entropy production is larger has been determined. Furthermore, the contribution of each of the mechanisms of entropy production which is depended on the wall heat flux is determined. It should be noted that the implementation of different heat fluxes at the tube wall affects all mechanisms of entropy generation. The results show that the bulk entropy generation reaches a minimum value when the heat transfer coefficient has a maximum value. The wall heat flux also has an opposite effect on the heat transfer coefficient and entropy generation which is a favorable result.

One of the main challenges of spray cooling technology is the prediction of local and average heat transfer coefficients on the heater surface. It is hypothesized that the local heat transfer coefficient can be predicted from the local normal pressure produced by the spray. In this study, hollow cone, full cone, and flat fan sprays, operated at three standoff distances, five spray pressures, and two nozzle orientations, were used to identify the relation between the impingement pressure and the heat transfer coefficient in the single-phase regime. PF-5060, PAO-2, and PSF-3 were used as test fluids, resulting in Prandtl number variation between 12 and 76. A microheater array operated at constant temperature was used to measure the local heat flux. A separate test rig was used to make impingement pressure measurements for the same geometry and spray pressure. The heat flux data were then compared with the corresponding impingement pressure data to develop a pressure-based correlation for spray cooling heat transfer. The maximum deviation between the experimental data and prediction was within ±25%.

Abstract Modern gas turbines lean combustors are used to limit NOx pollutant emissions; on the other hand, their adoption presents other challenges, especially concerning the combustor-turbine interaction. Turbine inlet conditions are generally characterized by severe temperature distortions and swirl degree, which is responsible for very high turbulence intensities. Past studies have focused on the description of the effects of these phenomena on the behavior of the high pressure turbine. Nevertheless, very limited experimental results are available when it comes to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the nozzle guide vane surface, since relevant temperature distortions present a severe challenge for the commonly adopted measurement techniques. The work presented in this paper was carried out on a non-reactive, annular, three-sector rig, made by a combustor simulator and a NGV cascade. It can reproduce a swirling flow, with temperature distortions at the combustor-turbine interface plane. This test apparatus was exploited to develop an experimental approach to retrieve heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic wall temperature distributions simultaneously, to overcome the known limitations imposed by temperature gradients on state-of-the-art methods for HTC calculation from transient tests. A non-cooled mockup of a NGV doublet, manufactured using low thermal diffusivity plastic material, was used for the tests, carried out using IR thermography with a transient approach. In the authors' knowledge, this presents the first experimental attempt of measuring a nozzle guide vane heat transfer coefficient in the presence of relevant temperature distortions and swirl.
