On LES Methods Applied to Seal Geometries

Nine Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods are used to simulate flow through two labyrinth seal geometries and are compared with a wide range of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solutions. These involve one-equation, two-equation and Reynolds Stress RANS models. Also applied are linear and nonlinear pure LES models, hybrid RANS-Numerical-LES (RANS-NLES) and Numerical-LES (NLES). RANS is found to have a maximum error and a scatter of 20%. A similar level of scatter is also found among the same turbulence model implemented in different codes. In a design context, this makes RANS unusable as a final solution. Results show that LES and RANS-NLES is capable of accurately predicting flow behaviour of two seals with a scatter of less than 5%. The complex flow physics gives rise to both laminar and turbulent zones making most LES models inappropriate. Nonetheless, this is found to have minimal tangible results impact. In accord with experimental observations, the ability of LES to find multiple solutions due to solution non-uniqueness is also observed.

The flow around an axisymmetric hull, with and without appendages, is investigated using large eddy simulation (LES), detached eddy simulation (DES), and Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) models. The main objectives of the study is to investigate the effect of the different simulation methods and to demonstrate the feasibility of using DES and LES on relatively coarse grids for submarine flows, but also to discuss some generic features of submarine hydrodynamics. For this purpose the DARPA Suboff configurations AFF1 (bare hull) and AFF8 (fully appended model) are used. The AFF1 case is interesting because it is highly demanding, in particular for LES and DES, due to the long midship section on which the boundary layer is developed. The AFF8 case represents the complex flow around a fully appended submarine with sail and aft rudders. An actuator disc model is used to emulate some of the effects of the propulsor for one of the AFF8 cases studied. Results for the AFF8 model are thus presented for both "towed" and "self-propelled" conditions, where as for the bare hull, only a "towed" condition is considered. For the AFF1 and the "towed" AFF8 cases experimental data are available for comparison, and the results from both configurations show that all methods give good results for first-order statistical moments although LES gives a better representation of structures and second-order statistical moments in the complex flow in the AFF8 case.

The complex flow physics challenges and asks questions regarding these challenges a wide range of jet flows found in aerospace engineering. Hence, the daunting task facing Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) technology, for which the time average of the turbulent flow field is solved, is set out. Despite the clear potential of large eddy simulation (LES)-related methods and hybrid forms involving some RANS modelling, numerous current deficiencies, mostly related to the limitations of computational resources, are identified. It is concluded that currently, these limitations make LES and hybrids most useful for understanding flow physics and refining RANS technology. The use of LES in conjunction with a ray-tracing model to elucidate the physics of acoustic wave transmission in jets and thus improved RANS technology is described. It is argued that, as a stopgap measure, pure RANS simulations can be a valuable part of the design process and can now predict acoustics spectra and directivity diagrams with useful accuracy. Ultimately, hybrid RANS–LES-type methods, and then pure LES, will dominate, but the time-scales for this transition suggests that improvements to RANS technology should not be ignored.

In this contribution, different 3D numerical approaches are applied in order to simulate the behaviour of turbulent flow through a rectangular channel with broad-crested weirs. In addition, water flow velocities, using Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) instrumentation, were recorded. Two turbulence quantities are estimated using the laboratory records and were compared with those computed with the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models. Additionally, a quadrant analysis of the laboratory records was carried out. The output of the models presents good agreement with the time-averaged parameters, but is not sufficient for the proper estimation of the turbulence quantities.

This paper provides a discussion of several aspects of the construction of approaches that combine statistical (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes, RANS) models with large eddy simulation (LES), with the objective of making LES an economically viable method for predicting complex, high Reynolds number turbulent flows. The first part provides a review of alternative approaches, highlighting their rationale and major elements. Next, two particular methods are introduced in greater detail: one based on coupling near-wall RANS models to the outer LES domain on a single contiguous mesh, and the other involving the application of the RANS and LES procedures on separate zones, the former confined to a thin near-wall layer. Examples for their performance are included for channel flow and, in the case of the zonal strategy, for three separated flows. Finally, a discussion of prospects is given, as viewed from the writer's perspective.

Abstract. In mesoscale climate models, urban canopy flow is typically parameterized in terms of the horizontally averaged (1-D) flow and scalar transport, and these parameterizations can be informed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the urban climate at the microscale. Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RANS) models have previously been employed to derive vertical profiles of turbulent length scale and drag coefficient for such parameterization. However, there is substantial evidence that RANS models fall short in accurately representing turbulent flow fields in the urban roughness sublayer. When compared with more accurate flow modeling such as large-eddy simulations (LES), we observed that vertical profiles of turbulent kinetic energy and associated turbulent length scales obtained from RANS models are substantially smaller specifically in the urban canopy. Accordingly, using LES results, we revisited the urban canopy parameterizations employed in the one-dimensional model of turbulent flow through urban areas and updated the parameterization of turbulent length scale and drag coefficient. Additionally, we included the parameterization of the dispersive stress, previously neglected in the 1-D column model. For this objective, the PArallelized Large-Eddy Simulation Model (PALM) is used and a series of simulations in an idealized urban configuration with aligned and staggered arrays are considered. The plan area density (λp) is varied from 0.0625 to 0.44 to span a wide range of urban density (from sparsely developed to compact midrise neighborhoods, respectively). In order to ensure the accuracy of the simulation results, we rigorously evaluated the PALM results by comparing the vertical profiles of turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses with wind tunnel measurements, as well as other available LES and direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies. After implementing the updated drag coefficients and turbulent length scales in the 1-D model of urban canopy flow, we evaluated the results by (a) testing the 1-D model against the original LES results and demonstrating the differences in predictions between new (derived from LES) and old (derived from RANS) versions of the 1-D model, and (b) testing the 1-D model against LES results for a test case with realistic geometries. Results suggest a more accurate prediction of vertical turbulent exchange in urban canopies, which can consequently lead to an improved prediction of urban heat and pollutant dispersion at the mesoscale.

A windcatcher is a structure for providing natural ventilation using wind power; it is usually fitted on the roof of a building to exhaust the inside stale air to the outside and supplies the outside fresh air into the building interior space working by pressure difference between outside and inside of the building. In this paper, the behavior of free wind flow through a three-dimensional room fitted with a centered position two-canal bottom shape windcatcher model is investigated numerically, using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package and LES (Large Eddy Simulation) CFD method. The results have been compared with the obtained results for the same model but using RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes) CFD method. The model with its surrounded space has been considered in both method. It is found that the achieved results for the model from LES method are in good agreement with RANS method’s results for the same model.

Numerical analysis of the flow in weapon bays modelled as open rectangular cavities of length-to-depth (L/D) ratio of 5 and width-to-depth (W/D) ratio of 1 with doors-on and doors-off is presented. Flow conditions correspond to Mach and Reynolds numbers (based on cavity length) of 0·85 and 6·783m respectively. Results from unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS), large-eddy simulation (LES) and detached-eddy simulation (DES) are compared with the simulation methods demonstrating the best prediction of this complex flow. It was found that URANS was not able to predict the change of flow characteristics between the doors-on and doors-off configurations. In addition, the energy content of the cavity flow modes was much better resolved with DES and LES. Further, the DES was found to be quite capable for this problem giving accurate results (within 3dB of) experiments and appears to be a promising alternative to LES for modelling massively separated flows.

Fast and accurate predictions of the flow and transport of materials in urban and complex terrain areas are challenging because of the heterogeneity of buildings and land features of different shapes and sizes connected by canyons and channels, which results in complex patterns of turbulence that can enhance material concentrations in certain regions. To address this challenge, we have developed an efficient three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code called Aeolus that is based on first principles for predicting transport and dispersion of materials in complex terrain and urban areas. The model can be run in a very efficient Reynolds average Navier–Stokes (RANS) mode or a detailed large eddy simulation (LES) mode. The RANS version of Aeolus was previously validated against field data for tracer gas and radiological dispersal releases. As a part of this work, we have validated the Aeolus model in LES mode against two different sets of data: (1) turbulence quantities measured in complex terrain at Askervein Hill; and (2) wind and tracer data from the Joint Urban 2003 field campaign for urban topography. As a third set-up, we have applied Aeolus to simulate cloud rise dynamics for buoyant plumes from high-temperature explosions. For all three cases, Aeolus LES predictions compare well to observations and other models. These results indicate that Aeolus LES can be used to accurately simulate turbulent flow and transport for a wide range of applications and scales.

In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) gas flow simulations are carried out. In CFD calculations, geometry modeling and physical modeling are crucial to CFD results. The effects of the treatments of the inter-pebble contacts on gas flow fields and heat transfer are examined; a sensitivity analysis for the gap size is conducted with two spherical pebbles, in which the inter-pebble region is modeled by means of two types of inter-pebble gaps and two kinds of direct contacts. On the other hand, both of large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models are employed to investigate the turbulent effects. It is found that the flow fields and relevant heat transfer are significantly dependent on the modeling of the inter-pebble regions. The calculations indicate the complex flow structures present within the voids between the fuel pebbles.

The gas turbine presents significant challenges to any computational fluid dynamics techniques. The combination of a wide range of flow phenomena with complex geometry is difficult to model in the context of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) solvers. We review the potential for large eddy simulation (LES) in modelling the flow in the different components of the gas turbine during a practical engineering design cycle. We show that while LES has demonstrated considerable promise for reliable prediction of many flows in the engine that are difficult for RANS it is not a panacea and considerable application challenges remain. However, for many flows, especially those dominated by shear layer mixing such as in combustion chambers and exhausts, LES has demonstrated a clear superiority over RANS for moderately complex geometries although at significantly higher cost which will remain an issue in making the calculations relevant within the design cycle.
