A Piezoelectric Droplet Generating Device for Experiment in Successive Droplets Impacting Onto Solid Surface

The outcomes of successive droplets impacting onto solid surface of the steam separator in a nuclear power system’s steam generator has a strong effect on the separating efficiency. Due to amounts of influencing factors, experimental research is an important method to study the phenomena of droplet-wall collision. However, because it is hard to generator continuous droplets with controllable uniform size and frequency, experimental studies about successive droplets impacting on solid surface are relative limited. In this study, a novel drop-on-demand (DOD) droplet generator is designed and fabricated based on piezoelectric ceramics, in which successive droplets with a uniform diameter can be generated. Firstly, the structure design of the DOD droplet generator, the setup of the control system and working principle are described in detail in this paper. Then the droplet generating performance of the device under different signal frequency fs, signal amplitude U, duty ratio Dr, and nozzle diameter Dn are investigated experimentally using a high-speed camera at 4000 fps. Finally, the influence of the signal frequency fs, voltage U, duty ratio Dr and nozzle diameter Dn on the diameter of droplet Dd is discussed. A test of successive droplets generated by the device impacting on an aluminum plate is conducted.

In this study we present the design and functionality of a pneumatic drop-on-demand droplet generator that produces metallic micro particles with a size range of 300 µm to 1350 µm at high temperatures of up to 1600 °C. Molten metal droplets were generated from an EN 1.3505 (AISI 52100) steel which solidified during a falling distance of 6.5 m. We analyzed the resulting particle size and morphology using static image analysis. Furthermore, the droplet formation mode was analyzed using high-speed recordings and the pressure oscillation was measured in the crucible. The system is meant to be reproducible in all aspects and therefore the in-situ measurements are set to control the droplet size and trajectory during the run. Additionally, the ex-situ measurements are done on the particles in order to characterize them in size and morphology aspects.

The effect of variables that influence the retention of spray droplets impacting on leaf surfaces was studied, using a uniform-size droplet generator to produce drops ranging from 63 to 545 μm diam. To observe the impaction of spray droplets more easily and to measure their velocity before and after impaction, high-speed motion photography (6000 frames/sec) was used. Rebound of spray droplets depends on the micro-structure of the target surface. Leaf surfaces of several crops and weeds reflected 63 to 545 μm diam water drops traveling at velocities less than velocities of drops delivered by popular nozzles at commonly used spray pressures. If the concentration is high enough, some surfactants can reduce the rebound of drops. With one surfactant, its concentration had to be much greater than the critical micelle concentration to reduce reflection of spray drops.

The ballasted track superstructure is characterized by a relative quick deterioration of track geometry due to ballast settlements and the accumulation of sleeper voids. The track zones with the sleeper voids differ from the geometrical irregularities with increased dynamic loading, high vibration, and unfavorable ballast-bed and sleeper contact conditions. This causes the accelerated growth of the inhomogeneous settlements, resulting in maintenance-expensive local instabilities that influence transportation reliability and availability. The recent identification and evaluation of the sleeper support conditions using track-side and on-board monitoring methods can help planning prevention activities to avoid or delay the development of local instabilities such as ballast breakdown, white spots, subgrade defects, etc. The paper presents theoretical and experimental studies that are directed at the development of the methods for sleeper support identification. The distinctive features of the dynamic behavior in the void zone compared to the equivalent geometrical irregularity are identified by numeric simulation using a three-beam dynamic model, taking into account superstructure and rolling stock dynamic interaction. The spectral features in time domain in scalograms and scattergrams are analyzed. Additionally, the theoretical research enabled to determine the similarities and differences of the dynamic interaction from the viewpoint of track-side and on-board measurements. The method of experimental investigation is presented by multipoint track-side measurements of rail-dynamic displacements using high-speed video records and digital imaging correlation (DIC) methods. The method is used to collect the statistical information from different-extent voided zones and the corresponding reference zones without voids. The applied machine learning methods enable the exact recent void identification using the wavelet scattering feature extraction from track-side measurements. A case study of the method application for an on-board measurement shows the moderate results of the recent void identification as well as the potential ways of its improvement.

The slab track is a new sort of track structure, which has been widely used in high-speed rail and special line for passenger. However, the ballastless track structure design theory is still not perfect and can not meet the requirements of current high-speed rail and passenger line ballastless track. In this paper, composite beam method is used to calculate the deflection of the track plate and in this way the vertical supporting stress distribution of the track plate can be gotten which set a basis for the follow-up study of the dynamic stress distribution in the subgrade. Slab track plate’s bearing stress under moving load is analyzed through Matlab program. By calculation and analysis, it is found that the deflection of track plate and the rail in the double-point-supported finite beam model refers to the rate of spring coefficient of the fastener and the mortar.The supporting stress of the rail plate is inversely proportional to the supporting stress of the rail. The two boundary conditions of that model ,namely, setting the end of the model in the seams of the track plate or not , have little effect on the results. We can use the supporting stress of the track plates on state 1to get the distribution of the supporting stress in the track plate when bogies pass. Also, when the dynamic load magnification factor is 1.2, the track plate supporting stress of CRST I & CRST II-plate non-ballasted structure is around 40kPa.

Foil bearing is considered to be a promising supporting technology in high-speed centrifugal machinery. Due to the high-speed shearing effect in the viscous lubricant film, heat generation could not be ignored. In this paper, a thermo-elastic model of the multi-leaf foil thrust bearing is proposed to predict its thermal and static characteristics. In the model, modified Reynolds equation, energy equation, and Kirchhoff equation are solved in a coupling way. The contact area between the foil and welding plate is taken into account. Besides, the effect of cooling air on the bearing temperature is investigated. The ultimate load capacity and transient overload failure process of the bearing is analyzed and discussed. The effect of rotation speed on the bearing temperature is more obvious than that of the bearing load. The bearing temperature drops obviously by introducing the cooling air, and the cooling effect is improved with the supply pressure. The transient overload failure of the bearing occurs when the bearing load exceeds the ultimate value.

Super-high speed polishing of diamond film is a newly proposed method due to its outstanding features such as low cost and simple apparatus. The interface temperature rise is due to the friction force and the relative sliding velocity between the CVD diamond film and the polishing metal plate surface. In this paper, the interface temperature rise in super-high speed polishing of CVD diamond film was investigated by using the single-point temperature measurement method. Additionally, the influence of polishing plate material on the characteristics of super-high speed polishing has been studied. The results showed that cast iron is not suitable for super-high polishing, while both 0Cr18Ni9 stainless steel and pure titanium can be used for the super-high polishing of CVD diamond film. The quality and efficiency of polishing with 0Cr18Ni9 stainless steel plate is much higher than those of pure titanium, and the material removal rate could reach to 36-51 m/h when the polishing speed and pressure are 100 m/s and 0.17-0.31 MPa, respectively.
