There is a basic misconception that diesel fuel does not explode and/or ignite upon a collision or impact. This particular chain of events, in fact, does occur. However, it is not always thoroughly investigated or understood. The purpose of this paper, through mechanical analysis and accident reconstruction, is to inform truck manufacturers and operators of this hazard. In addition, it will supply design alternatives that will aid in mitigating and/or preventing injuries altogether.

Analysis of the terroristic attacks in Siria, Afghanistan and other countries has shown high probability of the hazardous chemicals application by the terroristic groups. In the article the most catastrophic accidents which were connected with hazardous chemicals are described.That is why research and developments in the sphere of protection from hazardous chemicals are still actual.This article is dedicated to the new screening method of the spilled hazardous chemicals surface on the example of protection of the factories with these substances. Methodology, experimental apparatus, protective fast-hardening foam features, names of hazardous chemicals are shown.Test were made for such chemicals as: acetic acid, acetone, ammonia, bromine, chlorbenzene, chloroform, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen chloride, hexane, hydrazine, diesel fuel, dichlorethane, kerosene, toluene, phenol, hydrogen fluoride. Fantastic results were achieved in terms of isolating capability of the fast-hardening foam against evaporations of the pointed substances.

Abstract A two year old child strangled to death when the drawstrings of her jacket became lodged in a catch point hazard at the top of a residential sliding board. Approaches utilized in the safety analysis include accident reconstruction, safety literature review, standards research, an accident statistics survey, and an evaluation of alternative jacket and sliding board designs. Results of the analysis indicate there are technically and economically feasible design alternatives which prevent the child strangulation hazard associated with the jacket drawstrings and sliding board.

The jacket platform in the Bohai Sea oilfield is an important engineering development, offering design alternatives in this economically important region. However, ice-induced vibration in cold areas threatens the safety and operation of these platforms. On two occasions, intense ice-induced vibrations triggered the rupture of a well’s blow down pipeline, loosening the flanges on the Bohai platform, and leading to the ejection of high-pressure natural gas. Subsequent mechanical analysis of the failed parts helped define the mechanism of failure and identified the failure criteria, based on a prototype structure monitoring system. The analysis revealed that the deck’s inertial force, which resulted in ice-induced steady-state vibration, was the major cause of the accident. Three fixed cones were thus installed on the platform the following winter, effectively reducing the vibrations.

A 27 month old boy sustained burn injuries from a consumer electric cooker which was pulled off a kitchen countertop. Approaches utilized in the safety analysis include accident reconstruction, critical accident statistics analysis, UL 1083 standard research, and an evaluation of design alternatives. This paper investigates the safety implications of the new UL required break-away power cord for electric cookers/deep fryers.

A three year old boy died when a dining room chair he was sitting on fell backward, triggering bleeding along his spinal cord. Approaches utilized in the danger analysis include: accident reconstruction, safety literature review, safety standards research and testing, accident statistics survey, and evaluation of alternative dinette chair designs. The primary goal of this investigation is to make dinette chair designers, retailers, and users more aware of the tip over danger and to identify design alternatives to help reduce the number of these types of injuries.

The service performance of current dental composite materials, such as anterior and posterior restoratives and/or veneer cements, needs to be improved. As part of a comprehensive effort to find ways to improve such materials, we have launched a broad spectrum study of the physicochemical and mechanical properties of photopolymerizable or visible light cured (VLC) dental composites. The commercially available VLC materials being studied are shown in Table 1. A generic or neat resin VLC system is also being characterized by SEM and TEM, to more fully understand formulation variables and their effects on properties.At a recent dental research meeting, we reported on the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) characterization of the materials in Table 1. It was shown by DSC and DMA that the materials are substantially undercured by commonly used VLC techniques. Post curing in an oral cavity or a dry environment at 37 to 50°C for 7 or more hours substantially enhances the cure of the materials.
