Design for Supply Chain: Evaluation of Supply Chain Metrics

This paper describes the first phase of the authors’ Design for Supply Chain research that seeks to address supply chain excellence the product design process. In a global economy, companies must address supply chain issues beyond the traditional viewpoint of logistics, trucking, warehousing and include other considerations that affects design and manufacturing decisions. To include supply chain perspectives in the design of products and manufacturing processes, supply chain performance data play a critical role. This paper examines the source of data pertinent to design for supply chain using methods such as Customer Value Chain Analysis and Quality Function Deployment. A multi-industry benchmarking study also highlights the different approaches to Design for Supply Chain and emerging challenges of Social and Environmentally Responsible Supply Chains. The study revealed that lead time, quality and social/environmental metrics are the most important metrics for design for supply chain. Future research will address the refinement of metrics, the definition of the relevant data for product design, and effective approaches to incorporate the information into the product definition process.

Customer Value Chain Analysis (CVCA) is an original methodological tool that enables design teams in the product definition phase to comprehensively identify pertinent stakeholders, their relationships with each other, and their role in the product’s life cycle. By performing CVCA, design teams are better able to recognize diverse product requirements and their relative priority for undertaking Product Definition Assessment and downstream Design for X (DfX) tools, such as Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). This paper discusses the evolution of the CVCA in response to the need for a DfX tool which is able to delineate customer needs early in the product development process. A step-by-step guide clarifies the implementation of CVCA with an example. Further, three case studies highlight the tool’s broad utility and important features to support design decision-making, including: 1) confirmation of the product’s business model, 2) recognition of the critical stake-holders, and 3) clarification of the value proposition to be embedded in the product.

Under increasingly uncertain environment of long term life-cycle costs arising from such causes such as material price increases and carbon regulation, product development design decision makers need an improved method for evaluating project net present value under significant risks. This paper seeks to expose this need for an interdisciplinary design method capable of proactively managing long-term uncertainties and risks. First, the paper provides an overview of trends and uncertainties in material prices and environmental regulations. Second, we highlight a variety of existing work relevant to this research. The third section describes Customer Value Chain Analysis and Quality Function Deployment exercises towards addressing the nature of the challenge at hand. The study found that the primary customers for this research are engineering managers involved in strategic product development decisions. The most important aspects of a new methodology are to identify and characterize the uncertainties specific to a project, and to facilitate modeling. The final section describes a research path leading towards the development of a new design methodology. The paper concludes that a new framework will draw upon a variety of fields including Design For Reliability, Decision Analysis, Industrial Ecology, and Informatics.

O agronegócio tem papel de destaque na economia brasileira. Seu desempenho envolve o deslocamento de matérias-primas e produtos acabados até o consumidor final, o que é realizado por meio dos canais de suprimentos. Ao longo da cadeia de suprimentos (supply chain) podem ocorrer desperdícios. No meio industrial o lean é muito utilizado para a minimização dessa problemática. Desta maneira diversas cadeias agroalimentares têm buscado técnicas adotadas na manufatura para solucionar e gerenciar seus processos, como o lean. Esta pesquisa busca, em linhas gerais, identificar por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica sistemática (RBS) nas principais bases de periódicos científicos os artigos desenvolvidos que tem como foco a aplicação da metodologia do Lean Production em cadeias agroalimentares, a fim de analisar a amplitude dos trabalhos em termos ferramentais gerenciais para sua aplicação e as contribuições desses estudos. Observou-se que as ferramentas mais utilizadas nas publicações levantadas referentes à aplicação do lean na cadeia agroalimentar foram a Value Stream Mapping (VSM), a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) e a Food Value Chain Analysis (FVCA). Com maior número de aplicação do lean em cadeia de suprimentos do segmento de carne vermelha. Os artigos selecionados da RBS também observam a necessidade da integração de implantação do lean em todos os elos da cadeia para melhor eficácia. A maioria dos estudos das aplicações do lean ocorreram no Reino Unido após um incentivo do governo. Não foram encontrados estudos de implantação do lean nos segmentos agroalimentares cuja a aplicação fosse no Brasil.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the causal linkages among supply chain practices, effectiveness of supply chain performance (SCP) and organizational performance (OP) in Indian healthcare industries.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is helpful in developing a framework for linking a healthcare supply chain practice to its OP, and thus identifies how such a linkage can be connected to the effectiveness of SCP. Such effort also enables the authors to derive a set of recommended supply chain practices for SC performance.FindingsFrom the literature review, this paper finds that, in the context of Indian healthcare industries, efficient SC performance may play a critical role for overall OP improvement, as there is a close interrelationship between supply chain management (SCM) practices and SCP that may have a more significant effect on OP improvement.Research limitations/implicationsThe principle limitation of the paper is that it is performed only in a particular industry and with a questionnaire survey which could be extended in future for other industries also. Another limitation of the paper is that it is focused only on the SCP of medical device and equipment supply chain which is a small portion of the whole healthcare supply chain, and therefore requires further research covering various other domains of healthcare supply chain. Another limitation of the study is that the sample survey has been taken from only one respondent per company at one point of time which may create biasness in the results. Thus, future research should collect data through multiple members from the organization.Practical implicationsThis study contributes to know the effect of SCM practices on healthcare SCP and provides a practical and useful tool to evaluate the extent of effectiveness of SCP and finally their impact on the healthcare OP. Finally, this study provides conceptual and descriptive literature regarding SCM practices that leads to improvement in healthcare performance.Social implicationsThis study adds to the knowledge on healthcare SCM performance by exploring the relationship between supply chain practices, healthcare SCP and healthcare OP and by developing and testing a research framework thus help in improving patient satisfaction.Originality/valueThis study attempts to show how the potential benefits of supply chain practices can no longer be ignored in healthcare supply chain.

This chapter is designed to give the readers a concise understanding of supply chain strategies and the process involved in its formation. It is a background study on the changing role of supply chain in gaining competitive advantage for the firm. The chapter discusses on traceability and integration along a supply chain, its inception and the advantages to the corporate world through its implementation. The chapter focuses on the topic of value creation in a supply chain through strategic management decisions like vertical and horizontal integration. The value chain analysis model for competitive advantage is covered in this chapter. A discussion on the differences between vertical and horizontal integration systems and the best strategic decision among them is provided. The concepts of sustainable supply chain integration, traceability, and the limitations to their implementation have also been discussed. The best examples on practitioners of supply chain strategy and integration are provided along the chapter.


The ultimate goal of price value chain analysis is building an organizational capability for developing sustainable response in the market as well as among the consumers. This chapter highlights that the price-value chain is directly associated with the profit and growth of the company that is stimulated by customer preferences on price and brand loyalty. The customer satisfaction is largely influenced by the quality of price, perceived use value of products and services, and the value for money with reference to the prices offered by the firm. Hence, the price-value chain is created by customer satisfaction, perceived use value, loyalty, productive employees of the firm, and competitive advantage in price offerings. Approaches for measuring the customer value as an intangible factor, which has a significant role in influencing the buying decisions is also discussed in this chapter.

This article reports on a framework that has been successfully used to analyze the e-business capabilities of an organization with a view to developing their e-capability maturity levels. This should be the first stage of any systems development project. The framework has been used widely within start-up companies and well-established companies both large and small; it has been deployed in the service and manufacturing sectors. It has been applied by practitioners and consultants to help improve e-business capability levels, and by academics for teaching and research purposes at graduate and undergraduate levels. This article will provide an account of the unique e-business planning and analysis framework (E-PAF) and demonstrate how it works via an abridged version of a case study (selected from hundreds that have been produced). This will include a brief account of the three techniques that are integrated to form the analysis framework: quality function deployment (QFD) (Akao, 1972), the balanced scorecard (BSC) (Kaplan & Norton, 1992), and value chain analysis (VCA) (Porter, 1985). The case study extract is based on an online community and dating agency service identified as VirtualCom which has been produced through a consulting assignment with the founding directors of that company and has not been published previously. It has been chosen because it gives a concise, comprehensive example from an industry that is relatively easy to relate to.

Sustainable food supply chains are complex systems involving several stakeholders, processes, flow of goods/materials and information. The value generated in combination with the contradictory agendas among actors makes any groundwork for future research a challenging endeavor. Hence, an end-to-end mapping of the food supply chain under examination is a vital prerequisite for the design of a comprehensive research framework. This study exemplified such a mapping approach in the Greek sustainable tomato supply chain, providing significant insights for an impactful research agenda. Data were obtained from secondary sectoral sources and open interviews with key players across the supply chain—covering all its main stages, i.e., production, packaging, storing, transportation, wholesaling, and retailing. The findings are summarized in three supply chain maps that illustrate the areas concerning sustainability, value chain and stakeholders. These maps synthesize a bigger picture of the supply chain that reveals the complicated interactions among its actors, the hidden bottlenecks in the flow of information and the areas that need deeper exploration. Its fundamental implication is the design of a targeted research framework, underlying the main priorities of the Greek tomato supply chain and eventually the Greek agri-food sector.
