VIV and WIV Suppression With Parallel Control Plates on a Pair of Circular Cylinders in Tandem

Experiments have been carried out on two-dimensional devices fitted to a rigid length of circular cylinder to investigate the efficiency of pivoting parallel plates as wake-induced vibration suppressors. Measurements are presented for a circular cylinder with low mass and damping which is free to respond in the cross-flow direction. It is shown how VIV and WIV can be practically eliminated by using free to rotate parallel plates on a pair of tandem cylinders. Unlike helical strakes, the device achieves VIV suppression with 33% drag reduction when compare to a pair of fixed tandem cylinders at the same Reynolds number. These results prove that suppressors based on parallel plates have great potential to suppress VIV and WIV of offshore structures with considerable drag reduction.

Unlike helical strakes, the devices achieve VIV suppression with drag reduction. The device producing the largest drag reduction was found to have a drag coefficient equal to about 70% of that for a plain cylinder at the same Reynolds number.

Experiments have been carried out on models of rigid circular cylinders fitted with three different types of permeable meshes to investigate their effectiveness in the suppression of vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). Measurements of the dynamic response are presented for models with low mass and damping which are free to respond in the cross-flow direction. Results for two meshes made of ropes and cylindrical tubes are compared with the VIV response of a bare cylinder and that of a known suppressor called the “ventilated trousers” (VT). All three meshes achieved an average 50% reduction of the response when compared with that of the bare cylinder. The sparse mesh configuration presented a similar behaviour to the VT, while the dense mesh produced considerable VIV response for an indefinitely long range of reduced velocity. Reynolds number ranged from 1,000 to 10,000 and reduced velocity was varied between 2 and 13.

The Riser and Mooring project of the Norwegian Deepwater Programme (NDP) has undertaken a parametric study on the influence of marine growth on the effectiveness of helical strakes to suppress vortex-induced vibrations on circular cylinders. Helical strakes are one of the most commonly used devices to suppress vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) on marine risers. The aim is provide guidance on the effect marine growth has on the dynamic response of a riser fitted with such VIV suppression devices. The tests were conducted at MARINTEK in a controlled laboratory environment. Artificial marine growth was modelled, manufactured and tested. Both hard and soft marine growth of various heights and coverages were tested. The present paper discusses some results obtained in this test campaign.

A three-dimensional numerical method combining solution of the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with a rigid body structural dynamics response has been developed previously to aid in the prediction of the loads and motions of offshore structures. In this paper, we use the tool to compute the hydrodynamic flow around two tandem cylinders oriented perpendicularly to each other. The flow conditions and gap distances between the cylinders are chosen to match a set of water tunnel experiments carried out at the University of Queensland. Comparisons of Strouhal frequencies and example flowfield visualizations are presented between the experimental measurements and associated CFD results.

We investigate the early development of instabilities in the oscillatory viscous flow past cylinders with elliptic cross-sections using three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. This is a classical hydrodynamic problem for circular cylinders, but other configurations have received only marginal attention. Computed results for some different aspect ratios ${\it\Lambda}$ from 1 : 1 to 1 : 3, all with the major axis of the ellipse aligned in the main flow direction, show good qualitative agreement with Hall’s stability theory (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 146, 1984, pp. 347–367), which predicts a cusp-shaped curve for the onset of the primary instability. The three-dimensional flow structures for aspect ratios larger than 2 : 3 resemble those of a circular cylinder, whereas the elliptical cross-section with the lowest aspect ratio of 1 : 3 exhibits oblate rather than tubular three-dimensional flow structures as well as a pair of counter-rotating spanwise vortices which emerges near the tips of the ellipse. Contrary to a circular cylinder, instabilities for an elliptic cylinder with sufficiently high eccentricity emerge from four rather than two different locations in accordance with the Hall theory.

The importance of the in-flow oscillation of a single cylinder in cross-flow has been highlighted since an accident in a FBR-type reactor. In-flow oscillations have also been observed in tube arrays. This report is an experimental study on this phenomenon using totally nine cylinders in a water tunnel. Six cases, one single cylinder, two & three cylinders in parallel & in tandem, and a nine cylinder bundle, are examined. Every cylinder can move only in in-flow direction. The motion of cylinders is measured by the strain gages and by a high-speed digital video camera. The results are compared with the visualized vortex motion.

Superhydrophobic surfaces have been shown to produce significant drag reduction for both laminar and turbulent flows of water through large- and small-scale channels. In this paper, a series of experiments were performed which investigated the effect of superhydrophobic-induced slip on the flow past a circular cylinder. In these experiments, circular cylinders were coated with a series of superhydrophobic surfaces fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane with well-defined micron-sized patterns of surface roughness. The presence of the superhydrophobic surface was found to have a significant effect on the vortex shedding dynamics in the wake of the circular cylinder. When compared to a smooth, no-slip cylinder, cylinders coated with superhydrophobic surfaces were found to delay the onset of vortex shedding and increase the length of the recirculation region in the wake of the cylinder. For superhydrophobic surfaces with ridges aligned in the flow direction, the separation point was found to move further upstream towards the front stagnation point of the cylinder and the vortex shedding frequency was found to increase. For superhydrophobic surfaces with ridges running normal to the flow direction, the separation point and shedding frequency trends were reversed. Thus, in this paper we demonstrate that vortex shedding dynamics is very sensitive to changes of feature spacing, size and orientation along superhydrophobic surfaces.

The two-degrees-of-freedom of vortex-induced vibration of circular cylinders is numerically simulated with the software ANSYS/CFX. The VIV characteristic, in the two different conditions (A/D=0.07 and A/D=1.0), is analyzed. When A/D is around 0.07, the amplitude ratio of the cylinder’s VIV between in-line and cross-flow direction in the lock-in is lower than that in the lock-out. The in-line frequency is twice of that in cross-flow direction in the lock-out, but in the lock-in, it is the same as that in cross-flow direction and the same as that of lift force. When A/D is around 1.0, the amplitude ratio of the VIV between in-line and cross-flow in the lock-in is obviously larger than that in the lock-out. Both in the lock-in and in the lock-out, the in-line frequency is twice of that in cross-flow direction.

Abstract Slender offshore structures of a cylindrical cross section, such as drilling and production risers, are susceptible to vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) when exposed to water currents. The present work presents an experimental investigation of the suppression of VIV of a circular cylinder by means of three different types of helical strakes: (i) a strake with continuous blades, (ii) a strake with serrated blades (or fins) and (iii) a strake with serrated blades individually twisted in relation to the incoming flow. By altering the blade geometry to produce the twisted-bladed strake, it was possible to keep the same level of suppression of the cross-flow vibration achieved by conventional strakes, but reducing drag in 15%. Experiments have been conducted in a recirculating water channel at moderate Reynolds numbers.
