Investigation of Wave Conditions in the Paranagua´ Estuarine Complex in the South of Brazil

This paper summarises results of investigations aiming at the improvement of the understanding about the wave conditions in the Paranagua´ Estuarine Complex (PEC) in the South of Brazil. The investigations were carried out in the framework of a joint-research project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Science and Technology in Brazil. In this study a phase-averaged wave model was set-up and applied to the study area. The relevance of the main processes affecting wave generation and dissipation were investigated. Focus was given to the wave conditions in the vicinity of the harbour some 25km within the PEC. The fetch was found to have a major effect on wave generation in the study area. Significant wave heights up to about 0.6m resulted near the harbour during storms. The results obtained helped in advancing the development of the coupled process-based models for simulation of flow, waves and sediment transport in the PEC. It was found that although currents have a certain influence on the wave heights, the effect of the tidal variation resulted more significant. Moreover waves were found to affect the current velocities in shallow water areas and should therefore be included for enhancing the predictions of sediment transport rates particularly for more adverse wind conditions.

Two-dimensional models of large spatial domain including Cua Lo and Cua Hoi estuaries in Nghe An province, Vietnam, were established, calibrated, and verified with the observed data of tidal level, wave height, wave period, wave direction, and suspended sediment concentration. The model was then applied to investigate the hydrodynamics, cohesive sediment transport, and the morphodynamics feedbacks between two estuaries. Results reveal opposite patterns of nearshore currents affected by monsoons, which flow from the north to the south during the northeast (NE) monsoon and from the south to the north during the southeast (SE) monsoon. The spectral wave model results indicate that wave climate is the main control of the sediment transport in the study area. In the NE monsoon, sediment from Cua Lo port transported to the south generates the sand bar in the northern bank of the Cua Hoi estuary, while sediment from Cua Hoi cannot be carried to the Cua Lo estuary due to the presence of Hon Ngu Island and Lan Chau headland. As a result, the longshore sediment transport from the Cua Hoi estuary to the Cua Lo estuary is reduced and interrupted. The growth and degradation of the sand bars at the Cua Hoi estuary have a great influence on the stability of the navigation channel to Ben Thuy port as well as flood drainage of Lam River.

Feminist fractured foundationalism has been developed over a series of collaborative writings as a combined epistemology and methodology, although it has mainly been discussed in epistemological terms. It was operationalised as a methodology in a joint research project in South Africa concerned with investigating two important ways that the experiences of children in the South African War 1899-1902, in particular in the concentration camps established during its commando and ‘scorched earth’ phase, were represented contemporaneously: in the official records, and in photography. The details of the research and writing process involved are provided around discussion of the nine strategies that compose feminist fractured foundationalism and its strengths and limitations in methodological terms are reviewed.

In this work, internal wave generation techniques are developed in an open source non-hydrostatic wave model (Simulating WAves till SHore, SWASH) for accurate generation of regular and irregular long-crested waves. Two different internal wave generation techniques are examined: a source term addition method where additional surface elevation is added to the calculated surface elevation in a specific location in the domain and a spatially distributed source function where a spatially distributed mass is added in the continuity equation. These internal wave generation techniques in combination with numerical wave absorbing sponge layers are proposed as an alternative to the weakly reflective wave generation boundary to avoid re-reflections in case of dispersive and directional waves. The implemented techniques are validated against analytical solutions and experimental data including water surface elevations, orbital velocities, frequency spectra and wave heights. The numerical results show a very good agreement with the analytical solution and the experimental data indicating that SWASH with the addition of the proposed internal wave generation technique can be used to study coastal areas and wave energy converter (WEC) farms even under highly dispersive and directional waves without any spurious reflection from the wave generator.

Abstract. This paper presents an analysis of wave recordings with particular attention to assessing bimodality of the incident wave energy spectra and the occurrence of swell along the south and south-west coasts of the United Kingdom, (UK). A procedure is developed to perform an intensive analysis of a new and large dataset of measured wave spectra. A storm during February 2014 is analysed in detail, highlighting the observed wave conditions leading up to and during the collapse of the sea wall at Dawlish, UK. The analysis reveals the prevalence of trapped-fetch conditions and long-period swell during the February 2014 storm. Bimodality and the presence of swell are compared at three locations along the south coast of the UK. Results highlight the increase in bimodality during the 2013/2014 storm period, especially at Dawlish. The analysis also provides evidence of bimodality and swell waves occurring far along the English Channel. Observed wave conditions at Dawlish are compared to the parametric limits of empirical formulae to estimate wave overtopping. There were numerous instances of peak wave periods or wave heights outside the limits of the formulae, showing that existing design formulae do not yet adequately account for the range of conditions experienced in coastal waters.

This paper introduces a joint industries–academia–academia research project started by researchers in several automobile companies and universities working on a single theme. Our first target was to find a zeolite for NH3-SCR, that is, zeolite mining. Zeolite AFX, having the same topology of SSZ-16, was found to be the one of the zeolites. SSZ-16 can be synthesized by using an organic structure-directing agent such as 1,1′-tetramethylenebis(1-azonia-4-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octane; Dab-4, resulting in the formation of Al-rich SSZ-16 with Si/Al below five. We found that AFX crystallized by use of N,N,N′,N′-tetraethylbicyclo[2.2.2]oct-7-ene-2,3:5,6-dipyrrolidinium ion, called TEBOP in this study, had the same analog as SSZ-16 having Si/Al around six and a smaller particle size than SSZ-16. The AFX demonstrated a high performance for NH3-SCR as the zeolitic support to load a large number of divalent Cu ionic species with high hydrothermal stability.

The pressure on higher education institutions (HEIs) to realize third mission activities continues to grow, intensifying the search for incentives to motivate academics to engage with stakeholders outside their HEI. Previous studies have found limitations in intrinsically motivating academic engagement; therefore, this study investigates the extrinsic regulation of motivations via incentives. The authors identified a broad range of incentives for third mission activities, belonging to four motivation categories: pecuniary incentives, career advancement, appreciation and research support. Drawing on self-determination theory, incentives (nudges and rewards) are empirically compared in a between-subject design with a sample of 324 academics from the business and economics disciplines. The analysis showed that nudges affect business and economics academics’ intention to engage with society in a joint research project. Furthermore, these academics responded well to incentives concerned with the research support motivation category. The findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the relevance of marginal incentives—nudges—in implementing appropriate incentives in HEIs.
