The Effect of Material Nonlinearity on the Dynamics of Hull/Mooring Coupled System

The dynamics of a turret-moored FPSO with 12 catenary chain-steel wire-chain mooring lines are studied to investigate the influence of the hull/mooring coupled system from both linear and nonlinear stiffness of steel wire. The two simulated results are compared with experimental statistics, it indicated that the results using nonlinear stiffness are slightly larger than using linear stiffness and closer when compared with the experimental statistics. Then it illustrates that the polynomial approximation of nonlinearity for steel wire is applicable. The difference between linear and nonlinear results of steel wire is not apparent due to steel wire doesn’t belong to the viscoelastic material. This paper also researches the motion of FPSO with taut chain-polyester-chain mooring lines because polyester rope has viscoelastic properties. The results are unstable when using lower and upper linear stiffness in the time-domain simulation. But the dynamic response of FPSO is good by nonlinear stiffness. Thus, the nonlinear elastic method should be used in engineering works to decrease the damaged risk of the structure.

We study the linear and nonlinear viscoelastic properties of two tire tread compounds. We discuss the difference in nonlinear response between the oscillatory tensile and shear modes. We also analyze strain relaxation (creep) data for the same systems. We discuss what type of measurements are most suitable for obtaining the viscoelastic modulus used in rubber friction calculations.

The numerical procedures for dynamic analysis of mooring lines in the time domain and frequency domain were developed in this work. The lumped mass method was used to model the mooring lines. In the time domain dynamic analysis, the modified Euler method was used to solve the motion equation of mooring lines. The dynamic analyses of mooring lines under horizontal, vertical, and combined harmonic excitations were carried out. The cases of single-component and multicomponent mooring lines under these excitations were studied, respectively. The case considering the seabed contact was also included. The program was validated by comparing with the results from commercial software, Orcaflex. For the frequency domain dynamic analysis, an improved frame invariant stochastic linearization method was applied to the nonlinear hydrodynamic drag term. The cases of single-component and multicomponent mooring lines were studied. The comparison of results shows that frequency domain results agree well with nonlinear time domain results.

AbstractA convolution-based numerical algorithm is presented for the time-domain analysis of fluidelastic instability in tube arrays, emphasizing in detail some key numerical issues involved in the time-domain simulation. The unit-step and unit-impulse response functions, as two elementary building blocks for the time-domain analysis, are interpreted systematically. An amplitude-dependent unit-step or unit-impulse response function is introduced to capture the main features of the nonlinear fluidelastic (FE) forces. Connections of these elementary functions with conventional frequency-domain unsteady FE force coefficients are discussed to facilitate the identification of model parameters. Due to the lack of a reliable method to directly identify the unit-step or unit-impulse response function, the response function is indirectly identified based on the unsteady FE force coefficients. However, the transient feature captured by the indirectly identified response function may not be consistent with the physical fluid-memory effects. A recursive function is derived for FE force simulation to reduce the computational cost of the convolution operation. Numerical examples of two tube arrays, containing both a single flexible tube and multiple flexible tubes, are provided to validate the fidelity of the time-domain simulation. It is proven that the present time-domain simulation can achieve the same level of accuracy as the frequency-domain simulation based on the unsteady FE force coefficients. The convolution-based time-domain simulation can be used to more accurately evaluate the integrity of tube arrays by considering various nonlinear effects and non-uniform flow conditions. However, the indirectly identified unit-step or unit-impulse response function may fail to capture the underlying discontinuity in the stability curve due to the prespecified expression for fluid-memory effects.

Generally speaking, a vibration system consists of three parts: vibration resource, vibration transfer path, and vibration receiver. Based on the dynamic sensitivity technique, this paper proposes a method for evaluating the contribution of each vibration transfer path to the dynamic response of the vibration receiver. Nonlinear stiffness is an important factor in causing the nonlinearity of vibration systems. Taking sensitivity as the evaluation criteria, we present an effective approach for estimating the influence of nonlinear stiffness in vibration transfer paths on the dynamic response of the vibration receiver. Using the proposed method, the sensitivity of the vibration system with multiple and/or multidimensional transfer paths could be determined in the time domain.

Dynamic analyses of slender marine structures are computationally expensive. Recently it has been shown how a hybrid method which combines FEM models and artificial neural networks (ANN) can be used to reduce the computation time spend on the time domain simulations associated with fatigue analysis of mooring lines by two orders of magnitude. The present study shows how an ANN trained to perform nonlinear dynamic response simulation can be optimized using a method known as optimal brain damage (OBD) and thereby be used to rank the importance of all analysis input. Both the training and the optimization of the ANN are based on one short time domain simulation sequence generated by a FEM model of the structure. This means that it is possible to evaluate the importance of input parameters based on this single simulation only. The method is tested on a numerical model of mooring lines on a floating off-shore installation. It is shown that it is possible to estimate the cost of ignoring one or more input variables in an analysis.

Abstract Viscoelastic materials are widely used for vibroacoustic solutions due to their ability to mitigate vibration and sound. Wave propagation methods are based on the measurement of the waveform pattern of a transitory pulse in one-dimensional structures. The time evolution of the pattern can be used to deduce the material elasticity and damping characteristics. The most popular propagation methods, namely Hopkinson bar methods, assume no dispersion, i.e. the complex elasticity modulus is not frequency-dependent. This is not significant for resilient materials such as elastomers. More recent approaches have been developed to measure frequency-dependent properties from a pulse propagating in a slender bar. We showed in previous works how to adapt these techniques for shorter samples of materials, representing a real advance, as extrusion is a cumbersome process for many materials. The main concept was to reconstruct the time history of the wave propagating in a composite structure composed of a long incident bar made of a known material and extended by a shorter sample bar. Then the viscoelastic properties of the sample material were determined in the frequency domain within an inverse method held in the time domain. In industry, most isolation solutions using mounts or bushings must support structural weights. This is why it is particularly interesting to know the viscoelastic properties of the material in stressed state. Here, we show how to overcome this challenging issue. The theoretical framework of the computational approach is detailed and the method is experimentally verified.

With the introduction of the polyester ropes as mooring lines of large systems such as semi-submersibles, the need to simulate these lines in model tests became a necessity. Although the non-linear behavior is clear, depending on the type of cycling, the polyester rope responds in ways that may be considered linear as a steel wire rope. Because of that, the early model tests have been performed using a linear restoring capability, with different restoring coefficients. The use of equivalent springs seemed the proper way. However, with the help of fundamental investigation on the similarity laws, the present work shows that the use of very thin polyester lines in model scaling is feasible and will indeed allow a closer physical representation. By avoid using springs, but using the same material as in full scale, the same non-linear behavior is present during the tests and even the response to random excitation due to random waves is better represented. The paper closely describes the application of these ideas in a model test of a FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) comparing both the linear springs and new approach with the model scale equivalent polyester line.

As the offshore industry is developing into deeper and deeper water, station keeping technics are becoming more and more important to the industry. Based on the dynamic positioning system, the thruster assisted mooring system (TAMS) is developed, which consisted of mooring lines and thrusters. The main function of the TAMS is to hold a structure against wind wave and current loads with its thruster and cables, which is mainly evaluated by the holding capacity of the system. The arrangement of the mooring lines (location of anchor or the mooring line angle relative to platform) will directly affect the TAMS holding capacity because of the influence of the directions of the mooring forces. So finding out an optimum arrangement of the mooring lines is essential since the performance of the TAMS depends greatly on the arrangement of the mooring lines. The TAMS of a semi-submersible platform, which is studied in this paper, consisted of eight mooring lines. By fixing the layout of the thrusters and changing the location of each mooring line for every case, the performances of the TAMS are analyzed. The platform motions, mooring line tensions and power consumptions are compared to obtain the optimum arrangement of mooring lines, and thus a thruster assisted mooring system with a better performance can be achieved. Time domain simulation is carried out in this paper to obtain the results.

In order to replace hazardous molten lead baths in the heat treatment of carbon steel wire with environmentally friendly fluidized bed furnaces a better understanding is needed of their heat transfer rates. There has been considerable work done in examining heat transfer rates to large cylinders immersed in fluidized beds, and some on wire sized ones as well, but all previous studies have been conducted on static cylinders. In order to gain a deeper understanding of heat transfer rates to a moving wire immersed in a fluidized bed furnace an apparatus has been constructed to move a wire through a fluidized bed. The heat transfer rates were calculated using the difference in inlet and outlet temperatures, wire speed and the bed temperature. As predicted, correlations for static wire were found to under-predict heat transfer rates at higher wire speeds, so a new correlation was developed by modifying an existing one.
