The Efficiency of Tidal Fences: A Brief Review and Further Discussion on the Effect of Wake Mixing

Recent discoveries on the limiting efficiency of tidal fences are reviewed, followed by a new theoretical investigation into the effect of wake mixing on the efficiency of ‘full’ tidal fences (i.e. turbines arrayed regularly across an entire channel span). The new model is based on the momentum and energy balance equations but includes several unclosed terms, which depend on the actual (three-dimensional) characteristics of turbine near-wake mixing and therefore need to be modelled empirically. The new model agrees well with three-dimensional actuator disk simulations when those unclosed terms are assessed based on the simulations themselves, suggesting that this low-order model could serve as a basis to analyse how various physical factors (such as the design of turbines) affect the limiting efficiency of tidal fences via changes in those terms describing the characteristics of turbine near-wake mixing. Also discussed is the effect of wake mixing on the efficiency of ‘partial’ tidal fences.

AbstractThe characteristics of flow past a partial cross-stream array of (idealized) tidal turbines are investigated both analytically and computationally to understand the mechanisms that determine the limiting performance of partial tidal fences. A two-scale analytical partial tidal fence model reported earlier is further extended by better accounting for the effect of array-scale flow expansion on device-scale dynamics, so that the new model is applicable to short fences (consisting of a small number of devices) as well as to long fences. The new model explains theoretically general trends of the limiting performance of partial tidal fences. The new model is then compared to three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) computations of flow past an array of various numbers (up to 40) of actuator disks. On the whole, the analytical model agrees well with the RANS computations, suggesting that the two-scale dynamics described in the analytical model predominantly determines the fence performance in the RANS computations as well. The comparison also suggests that the limiting performance of short partial fences depends on how much of device far-wake mixing takes place within the array near-wake region. This factor, however, depends on the structures of the wake and therefore on the type/design of devices to be arrayed.

AbstractWe have improved previous model calculations of the prominence-corona transition region including the effect of the ambipolar diffusion in the statistical equilibrium and energy balance equations. We show its influence on the different parameters that characterize the resulting prominence theoretical structure. We take into account the effect of the partial frequency redistribution (PRD) in the line profiles and total intensities calculations.

Photovoltaic Thermal Solar Collector (PVT) is a hybrid technology used to produce electricity and heat simultaneously. Current enhancements in PVT are to increase the electrical and thermal efficiencies. Many PVT factors such as type of absorber, thermal conductivity, type of PV module and operating conditions are important parameters that can control the PVT performance. In this paper, an analytical model, using energy balance equations, is studied for PVT with an improved parallel flow absorber. The performance is calculated for a typical sunny weather in Malaysia. It was found that the maximum electrical and thermal efficiencies are 12.9 % and 62.6 %, respectively. The maximum outlet water temperature is 59 oC.

The near wake of a blunt-base cylinder at 10° angle-of-attack to a Mach 2.46 free-stream flow is visualized at several locations to study unsteady aspects of its structure. In both side-view and end-view images, the shear layer flapping grows monotonically as the shear layer develops, similar to the trends seen in a corresponding axisymmetric supersonic base flow. The interface convolution, a measure of the tortuousness of the shear layer, peaks for side-view and end-view images during recompression. The high convolution for a septum of fluid seen in the middle of the wake indicates that the septum actively entrains fluid from the recirculation region, which helps to explain the low base pressure for this wake compared to that for a corresponding axisymmetric wake.

A cross-sectionally averaged one-dimensional long-wave model is developed. Three-dimensional equations of motion for inviscid and incompressible fluid are first integrated over a channel cross-section. To express the resulting one-dimensional equations in terms of the cross-sectional-averaged longitudinal velocity and spanwise-averaged free-surface elevation, the characteristic depth and width of the channel cross-section are assumed to be smaller than the typical wavelength, resulting in Boussinesq-type equations. Viscous effects are also considered. The new model is, therefore, adequate for describing weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive wave propagation along a non-uniform channel with arbitrary cross-section. More specifically, the new model has the following new properties: (i) the arbitrary channel cross-section can be asymmetric with respect to the direction of wave propagation, (ii) the channel cross-section can change appreciably within a wavelength, (iii) the effects of viscosity inside the bottom boundary layer can be considered, and (iv) the three-dimensional flow features can be recovered from the perturbation solutions. Analytical and numerical examples for uniform channels, channels where the cross-sectional geometry changes slowly and channels where the depth and width variation is appreciable within the wavelength scale are discussed to illustrate the validity and capability of the present model. With the consideration of viscous boundary layer effects, the present theory agrees reasonably well with experimental results presented by Chang et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 95, 1979, pp. 401–414) for converging/diverging channels and those of Liu et al. (Coast. Engng, vol. 53, 2006, pp. 181–190) for a uniform channel with a sloping beach. The numerical results for a solitary wave propagating in a channel where the width variation is appreciable within a wavelength are discussed.

This paper describes the results of numerical work to determine the flow structures of the slipstream and wake of a high speed train on platforms of underground rail station using three-dimensional compressible Euler equation. The simulations were carried out on a model of a simplified three-coach train and typical cross-section of Chinese high-speed railway tunnel. A number of issues were observed: change process of slipstreams, longitudinal and horizontal distribution characteristics of train wind. Localized velocity peaks were obtained near the nose of the train and in the near wake region. Maximum and minimum velocity values were also noticed near to the nose rear tip. These structures extended for a long distance behind the train in the far wake flow. The slipstream in platform shows the typical three-dimensional characteristics and the velocity is about 4 m/s at 6 m away from the edge of platform.
