A Conceptual Framework for Assessing the Potential of Ocean Mining Sites

Ocean mining is considered to be the new offshore frontier and has been the center of research and commercial focus over the past few years. The further development of the ocean mining industry posts challenges in many fields including engineering, economics, environment, law, logistics and supply chain. This research aims to understand the challenges and link these fields by developing a framework for assessing the potential of ocean mining sites. Seabed resources and associated exploration and exploitation technologies are reviewed. Based on this review, it identifies the most promising ocean mining sites, the massive sulphide deposits in inactive hydrothermal vents, along the oceanic ridge in the Exclusive Economic Zone. An online survey is conducted to obtain a broader academic and industrial view on ocean mining. The world’s first commercial ocean mining project developed by Nautilus Minerals Inc. is also analyzed as a case study. Based on the seabed resources review, online survey and case study, the major challenges in ocean mining are presented, covering engineering systems, environmental risk mitigation, economic feasibility, law, logistics and supply chain.

The lack of vulnerability control leads to organizational harm in global businesses when the exploitation of a weakness occurs. How can a global supply chain protect itself from vulnerabilities that can damage their brand and their physical property? In this qualitative case study the author shows how a multi-site corporation can use a method to learn what the vulnerabilities are in a single facility and use a framework to methodically scale the controls needed to mitigate vulnerabilities across the supply chain. This framework allows leadership to keep cost in mind so that the highest vulnerabilities are mitigated as a priority. A team of security experts was used to capture data in framework used for analysis. This framework was then used strategically to reduce the overall risk of threat vectors in the global organization.

Supply chain activity has an opportunity for the occurrence of risk. Therefore, risk management is needed in the handling of risk with the aim to minimize the risk level and impact of those risks. PT. XYZ of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) engaged in the fertilizer industry. The main product produced is urea fertilizer. In the production process, the factory is supported by adequate production facilities and international standard technology. Currently, PT XYZ does not yet have risk management which explicitly discusses the proposed risk management along with the handling strategies required by the company. By looking at the current condition of the company, in order to achieve the goals to be achieved the company needs a good supply chain planning such as by identifying the risks that exist in the supply chain and preventive measures. Performed risk analysis and evaluation of potential supply chain companies using HOR (House Of Risk) tools. After the research there were 42 risk events and 42 risk agents. With the 80/20 pareto approach, 9 risk agents are planned for mitigation action. There are 11 recommended risk mitigation actions recommended to the company in the hope of addressing the risk of urea fertilizer supply chain.

In a supply chain network, facilities are the primary components where a product is manufactured or stored. During the phase of design of a supply chain network, a company decides how to configure the supply chain over the next several years. Key driver of supply chain performance in terms of responsiveness and efficiency will be taken into consideration in the decision process and the decisions include the role assigned to each facility, its capacity to perform the assigned role, the number and location of the facilities. Since supply chain design decisions pertaining to facilities are typically made for the long term and are very expensive to alter on short notice, the decisions must take into account uncertainty in anticipated market conditions over the next few years. Decisions regarding facilities are therefore a crucial part of supply chain design. This chapter explains the practical application of theories, concepts and frameworks in the area of Supply Chain Design, Risk Mitigation and Social Networks. The practical application is based on a case study of ABC, one of the world's leading agribusiness companies with global operations that made a successful foray in emerging markets facilitated by sound decisions pertaining to the design of its global supply chain network. Certain names and other identifying information were disguised to protect confidentiality.

Purpose: The purpose of this case study is to develop and framework supply chain characteristics and risk mitigation strategies in the context of biodiesel downstream supply chain.Design/methodology/approach: This study employs an expert interview-based approach as a qualitative approach with a multi-perspectives view.Findings: There are vary strategies among perspectives, such as perspectives of organization and business types, stakeholder types, times and methods. These also shows that business strategy of collaborative, coordinative, and cooperative arise as alternative strategies for each perspective and each level of stakeholder. Those business strategies may apply in a vary operation strategies which linking through an energy security framework element as company’s competitive priorities.Research limitations/implications: The research scope includes only a certain area of the country’s territory and the target company’s supply chain areas of activity. The research method includes only internal stakeholders and experts as respondents and data sources. The level of analysis was only at corporate level in the corporate case study context. The research also targets only a downstream activities of biodiesel supply chain context. The interview-based approach as a qualitative approach faces some subjectivity challenges among respondents.Practical implications: The research result provides some positive implications for business practice, includes how to minimize the impact of supply chain risk on company’s business activities and performance, how supply chain experts and practitioners used risk mitigation practices, how to formulate strategic plans to minimize the impact of supply chain risk and enhance the effectivity and sustainability of the supply chain activities.Social implications: The implication for business practice was that company’s leaders implemented supply chain risk mitigation strategies that provide positive impacts on the more valuable relationship among supply chain actors and stakeholders.Originality/value: The first, is an activities areas and operation schemes-based of biodiesel supply chain point of view. The second, is a multi-perspectives-based biodiesel supply chain characteristics framework. The third, is an energy security framework-based biodiesel risk mitigation strategies framework.

Purpose The competitiveness of mining regions largely depends on the performance of the regional supply chains that provide services to mining companies. These local supply chains are often highly intertwined and represent a regional supply network for the industry. Individual companies often use supply chain strategies that are sub-optimal to overall supply network performance. To effectively respond to an uncertain business environment, policy-makers and supply chain participants would benefit by a governance framework that would allow to incentivise the formation of supply networks structures enabling effective operations. The purpose of this paper is to offer an empirically grounded conceptual framework based on Complex Adaptive Systems (CASs) governance principles, which links network governance mechanisms with supply network structure and operational performance to incentivise the formation of adaptive and resilient supply networks in the mining industry. Design/methodology/approach A mixed method research design and a case study of the South Australian mining sector were used to collect empirical data. Qualitative interviews and network analysis of the SA mining industry regional supply network structure were conducted. The relationships between network parameters were interpreted using CAS theory. Findings An empirically grounded conceptual framework based on CAS governance principles is developed. The case study revealed that supply chain strategies and governance mechanisms in the SA mining industry have led to the formation of a hierarchical, scale-free structure with insufficient horizontal connectivity which limits the adaptability, responsiveness and resilience of the regional supply network. Research limitations/implications The findings are drawn from a single case study. This limits generalisability of the findings and the proposed framework. Practical implications The proposed framework draws the attention of the policy-makers and supply chain participants towards the need for utilising CAS governance principles to facilitate the formation of adaptive, responsive and resilient regional supply networks in the mining industry. Originality value The proposed conceptual framework is an attempt to parameterise the governance of the regional supply networks in the mining industry.

The Best Value Approach (BVA) is a new project delivery method that has been documented to increase performance and value. It does this by changing the traditional project delivery characteristics of managing the expert and focusing on the technical side of the project, to utilizing the expertise of the experts and using performance information and risk mitigation to manage the project. Large organizations have had difficulty in sustaining the BVA. A large private organization agreed to test the BVA on the replacement of a roofing system on one of its facilities. A case study research was performed on this project, using the grounded research approach, to identify if a large supply chain stakeholder can utilize the BVA to sustain high performance, value, and low price at the same time in a highly competitive marketplace. The research proposal is to document issues and benefits of utilizing the BVA. Identifying why large organizations have an issue with sustaining the approach and being utilized on more projects. The results of the paper will identify issues organizations have with implementing the BVA and the benefits in using the delivery system on construction services. The case study utilizes a stakeholder in the roofing industry supply chain and shows an approach to construction services that utilizes performance information and risk mitigation.

Malaysia has faced many supply chain issues that not only have affected enterprises but also the overall economy. Natural disasters that badly affect the performance of Malaysian enterprises strongly demand a comprehensive investigation of supply chain risks. Effective mitigation strategy can only be operationalized when risks are appropriately identified and assessed. Supply chain collaboration has been verified to have a positive impact on the performance but only a limited number of studies investigate it as a risk mitigation tool. The current study presents a guiding framework for identification, assessment, and migration of environment side risks for Malaysian manufacturing. A questionnaire has been developed and distributed by systemic probability sampling. Data have been collected from the Federation of Manufacturing Malaysia through an online survey. The data were purified from missing values and outliers and were analyzed through structural equational modeling through Smart PLS. A total of nine environment side risks were identified. In risk assessment, it has been found that an environment side risk has negative effects on supply chain performance. While these risks can be mitigated through supply chain collaboration, they cannot be mitigated completely. This study will help managers to understand how environment side risks are affecting enterprise performance and how they can avoid these risks. This study covers only environment side risks while future research can be on operational risks and various other approaches that can be proposed for mitigation.
