Dynamic Response Comparison of Mono and Dual Submerged Floating Tunnels

Abstract Submerged floating tunnel (SFT) concept has been studied by many researchers as an alternative of conventional or floating bridges, especially in the fjord or as a connection between island and land. One of the major challenges is large dynamic responses under extreme wave and earthquake excitations. In this regard, two different types of SFT, which are mono and dual SFTs, are suggested in this study, and the global performance of them is compared through tunnel-mooring fully-coupled time-domain numerical simulations. The tunnel and mooring lines are modeled by the lumped-mass-based line model. The Morison equation is utilized for hydrodynamic load estimations of the tunnel and mooring lines at their instantaneous positions. To check dynamic response of SFT under operating condition, 10-yr waves with the current are considered as an environmental condition. Dynamic responses, mooring tensions, and inertial and drag forces are systematically compared.

In order to discuss the effect of earthquake and dynamic ice loads to a bridge pier, this paper considered the effect of added mass of dynamic water, and it deduced the dynamic equilibrium equations for a bridge pier subject to earthquake and dynamic ice loads on the basis of nonlinear Morision equation. Using numerical analysis method, it discussed the dynamic response of a bridge pier subject to different types of earthquake loads, forced ice loads, and both earthquake and forced ice loads. Through comparing the pier responses in different work conditions, it discovered that the dynamic responses of the bridge pier subject to forced dynamic ice loads rise and fall severely at the time of ice buckling broken periodic change. The coupling effects of forced dynamic ice loads and earthquake especially near-fault earthquake enhance the dynamic response of bridge pier significantly.

The paper discusses the effects of mooring configurations on the dynamic response of a submerged floating offshore wind turbine (SFOWT) for intermediate water depths. A coupled dynamic model of a wind turbine-tower-floating platform-mooring system is established, and the dynamic response of the platform, tensions in mooring lines, and bending moment at the tower base and blade root under four different mooring configurations are checked. A well-stabilized configuration (i.e., four vertical lines and 12 diagonal lines with an inclination angle of 30°) is selected to study the coupled dynamic responses of SFOWT with broken mooring lines, and in order to keep the safety of SFOWT under extreme sea-states, the pretension of the vertical mooring line has to increase from 1800–2780 kN. Results show that the optimized mooring system can provide larger restoring force, and the SFOWT has a smaller movement response under extreme sea-states; when the mooring lines in the upwind wave direction are broken, an increased motion response of the platform will be caused. However, there is no slack in the remaining mooring lines, and the SFOWT still has enough stability.

Floating spar platform has been proven to be an economical and efficient type of offshore oil and gas exploration structure in deep and ultra-deep seas. Associated nonlinearities, coupled action, damping effect and extreme sea environments may modify its structural responses. In this study, fully coupled spar–mooring system is modelled integrating mooring lines with the cylindrical spar hull. Rigid beam element simulates large cylindrical spar hull and catenary mooring lines are configured by hybrid beam elements. Nonlinear finite element analysis is performed under extreme wave loading at severe deep sea. Morison's equation has been used to calculate the wave forces. Spar responses and mooring line tensions have been evaluated. Though the maximum mooring line tensions are larger at severe sea-state, it becomes regular after one hour of wave loading. The response time histories in surge, heave, pitch and the maximum mooring tension gradually decreases even after attaining steady state. It is because of damping due to heavier and longer mooring lines in coupled spar–mooring system under deep water conditions. The relatively lesser values of response time histories in surge, heave, pitch and the maximum mooring tension under extreme wave loading shows the suitability of a spar platform for deep water harsh and uncertain environmental conditions.

A submerged floating tunnel (SFT) is considered an innovative alternative to conventional bridges and underground or immersed tunnels for passing through deep water. Assessment of hydrodynamic performance of SFT under regular wave loading is one of the important factors in the design of SFT structure. In this paper, a theoretical hydrodynamic model is developed to describe the coupled dynamic response of an SFT and mooring lines under regular waves. In this model, wave-induced hydrodynamic loads are estimated by the Morison equation for a moving object, and the simplified governing differential equation of the tunnel with mooring cables is solved using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta and Adams numerical method. The numerical results are successfully validated by direct comparison against published experimental data. On this basis, the effects of the parameters such as the cable length, buoyancy-weight ratio, wave period, wave steepness, and water/submergence depth on the dynamic response of the SFT under wave loading are studied. The results show that tunnel motions and cable tensions grow with wave height and period and decrease with submergence depth. The resonance of the tunnel will be triggered when the wave period is close to its natural vibration period, and the estimation formula of wave period corresponding to tunnel resonance is proposed in this paper.

Presented in this study is investigation of dynamic behavior of a helical gear reduction by experimental and numerical methods. A closed-loop test rig is designed to measure vibrations of the example system, and the basic principle as well as relevant signal processing method is introduced. A hybrid user-defined element model is established to predict relative vibration acceleration at the gear mesh in a direction normal to contact surfaces. The other two numerical models are also constructed by lumped mass method and contact FEM to compare with the previous model in terms of dynamic responses of the system. First, the experiment data demonstrate that the loaded transmission error calculated by LTCA method is generally acceptable and that the assumption ignoring the tooth backlash is valid under the conditions of large loads. Second, under the common operating conditions, the system vibrations obtained by the experimental and numerical methods primarily occur at the first fourth-order meshing frequencies and that the maximum vibration amplitude, for each method, appears on the fourth-order meshing frequency. Moreover, root-mean-square (RMS) value of the acceleration increases with the increasing loads. Finally, according to the comparison of the simulation results, the variation tendencies of the RMS value along with input rotational speed agree well and that the frequencies where the resonances occur keep coincident generally. With summaries of merit and demerit, application of each numerical method is suggested for dynamic analysis of cylindrical gear system, which aids designers for desirable dynamic behavior of the system and better solutions to engineering problems.

The numerical procedures for dynamic analysis of mooring lines in the time domain and frequency domain were developed in this work. The lumped mass method was used to model the mooring lines. In the time domain dynamic analysis, the modified Euler method was used to solve the motion equation of mooring lines. The dynamic analyses of mooring lines under horizontal, vertical, and combined harmonic excitations were carried out. The cases of single-component and multicomponent mooring lines under these excitations were studied, respectively. The case considering the seabed contact was also included. The program was validated by comparing with the results from commercial software, Orcaflex. For the frequency domain dynamic analysis, an improved frame invariant stochastic linearization method was applied to the nonlinear hydrodynamic drag term. The cases of single-component and multicomponent mooring lines were studied. The comparison of results shows that frequency domain results agree well with nonlinear time domain results.

According to the actual working condition of the gear, the supporting gear shaft is treated as an elastic support. Its impact on the gear body vibration is considered and investigated and the dynamic response of elastic teeth and gear body is analyzed. On this basis, the gear body is considered as a three-dimensional elastic disc and the gear teeth are treated as an elastic cantilever beam. Under the conditions of the elastic boundary (support shaft), combining to the elastic disk and elastic teeth, the influence of three-dimensional elastic discs on the meshing tooth response under an elastic boundary condition is also included. A dynamic model of the gear support system and calculated model of the gear tooth response are then established. The inherent characteristics of the gear support system and dynamics response of the meshing tooth are presented and simulated. It was shown by the results that it is correct to use the elastic support condition to analyze the gear support system. Based on the above three-dimensional elastic dynamics analysis, this paper set up a dynamics coupling model of a cracked gear structure support system that considered the influence of a three-dimensional elastic disc on a cracked meshing tooth under elastic conditions. It discusses the dynamic characteristic of the cracked gear structure system and coupling dynamic response of the meshing tooth, offering a three-dimensional elastic body model of the tooth root crack and pitch circle crack with different sizes, conducting the three-dimensional elastic dynamic analysis to the faulty crack. ANSYS was employed to carry out dynamic responses, as well as to simulate the acoustic field radiation orientation of a three-dimensional elastic crack body at the tooth root crack and pitch circle with different sizes.
