Abstract Shear horizontal (SH) guided waves are being widely considered as a promising tool for locating wall thinning corrosion in pipelike structures. One established approach to excite such waves in pipes is through the magnetostrictive transducers (MsT), which is an electromagnetic-based guided wave transducer that offers unique advantages over other transducer types. A common practice for fast screening of defects is using an automated probe positioning system. In this paper, we report the usage of a newly designed linear scanning MsT, where an iron cobalt (FeCo) strip of a predefined length wound with radio frequency (RF) coils is attached to the testing structure using shear wave couplants and a moving permanent magnet driven by a stepper motor is used to excite SH guided waves at predefined positions. In this fashion, manual manipulation of probe is minimized which significantly increases testing speed. The performance of the linear scanning MsT at corrosion inspection is evaluated experimentally by introducing “V” shaped gradual wall thinning patches of different depths and locations on a 406 mm outer diameter (OD) steel pipe with 10 mm wall thickness. The reflection and transmission amplitudes of SH modes, as well as indications from B-scan and synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) images, are extracted for corrosion detection and quantification. Numerical modeling is also conducted to facilitate the understanding of SH waves interaction with defects.

Abstract This paper investigates the interaction behaviour between the fundamental shear horizontal guided wave mode and small defects, in order to understand and develop an improved inspection system for titanium samples. In this work, an extensive range of defect sizes have been simulated using finite element software. The SH0 reflection from a defect has been shown previously to depend on its length as the total reflection consists of reflections from both the front and back face. However, for small defect widths, this work has found that the width also affects this interference, changing the length at which the reflection is largest. In addition, the paper looks at how the size of the defect affects the mode converted S0 reflection and SH0 diffraction. The relationship between the SH0 diffraction and defect size is shown to be more complex compared to the reflections. The mode converted S0 reflection occurs at an angle to the incident wave direction; therefore, the most suitable angle for the detection has been found. Simultaneous measurement of multiple waves would bring benefits to inspection.

The imaging and testing of ultrasonic SH (Shear Horizontal) guided waves may be used into testing and SHM (Structure Health Monitoring) of industrial plate with welding structure in service, which have much more important applied potential. During imaging and testing for steel plate with lap welding structure, photoelastic experiment on propagation of guided waves in Plexiglas plate was studied to clearly see the excellent advantages of SH guided waves. The mode of SH guided waves was analyzed to select the zero order mode SH0 and the SH guided waves transducer with SH0 mode was developed. Based on the synthetic aperture focusing method,a multichannel ultrasonic imaging and testing experimental system of ultrasonic SH guided waves was constructed, the imaging of plate with lap welding structure was mainly studied. The research results shows the ultrasonic SH guided waves and the transducers are fit for long distance testing for the plate with lap welding structure. The ultrasound scattering nearby the weld may cause a blind testing zone, about 150 mm wide, in which the less size corrosion defects at the blind zone could not be revealed in image, so as to lead to defects “no testing”. The imaging and testing of ultrasonic SH guided waves would be used for non-destructive testing of plate with lap welding structure, which image both can characterize the corrosion defects and lap welding structure, and realize the precise location of the weld. The proposed research provides important foundation for improving ultrasonic guided waves imaging and testing quality and SHM of industrial in-site plate with lap welding and larger size.

This work proposes the use of a Halbach magnet structure to enhance the generation efficiency of shear horizontal (SH) guided waves on a plate. SH waves are normally generated using periodic permanent magnet (PPM) electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). Two PPM configurations are designed using a Halbach magnet array and the enhancements of the static magnetic fields of the two magnet arrays are validated by the finite element method, indicating that these configurations can increase the peak flux density compared with the conventional configuration. Numerical analysis and experimental investigations indicate that a racetrack coil combined with either a rectangular or triangular Halbach magnet array can enhance the amplitude of the SH guided wave by factors of ∼1.2 and ∼1.1, respectively, and that the rectangular array performs better and is more cost effective.

This study presents a feasibility of using guided waves for a long-range inspection of pipe through investigation of mode conversion and scattering pattern from edge and wall-thinning in a steel pipe. Phase and group velocity dispersion curves for reference modes of pipes are illustrated for theoretical analyses. Predicted modes could be successfully generated by controlling frequency, receiver angle and wavelength. The dispersive characteristics of the modes from and edge wall-thinning are compared and analyzed respectively. The mode conversion characteristics are distinct depending on dispersive pattern of modes. Experimental feasibility study on the guided waves was carried out to explore wall thinning part in pipe for data calibration of a long range pipe monitoring by comb transducer and laser.

Shear horizontal (SH) guided waves have been proved to be a viable method in the Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) can excite SH waves easily. By bonding the Fe-Co alloy to the test sample, the SH guided waves based on magnetostriction effect can be used to detect the flaw in nonferromagnetic material. The principle of exciting and receiving SH waves is introduced, and an experiment is carried out to validate the result.

Ultrasonic guided waves have proven to be an effective and efficient method for damage detection and quantification in various plate-like structures. In honeycomb sandwich structures, wave propagation and interaction with typical defects such as hidden debonding damage are complicated; hence, the detection of defects using guided waves remains a challenging problem. The work presented in this article investigates the interaction of low-frequency guided waves with core–skin debonding damage in aluminum core honeycomb sandwich structures using finite element simulations. Due to debonding damage, the waves propagating in the debonded skin panel change to fundamental antisymmetric Lamb waves with different wavenumber values. Exploiting this mechanism, experimental inspection using a non-contact laser Doppler vibrometer was performed to acquire wavefield data from pristine and debonded structures. The data were then processed and analyzed with two wavefield data–based imaging approaches, the filter reconstruction imaging and the spatial wavenumber imaging. Both approaches can clearly indicate the presence, location, and size of the debonding in the structures, thus proving to be effective methods for debonding detection and quantification for honeycomb sandwich structures.

The generation of axisymmetric Lamb waves and interaction with wall thinning (corrosion) defects in hollow cylinders are simulated using the finite element method. Guided wave interaction with defects in cylinders is challenged by the multi-mode dispersion and the mode conversion. In this paper, two longitudinal, axisymmetric modes are generated using the concept of a time-delay periodic ring arrays (TDPRA), which makes use of the constructive/destructive interference concept to achieve the unidirectional emission and reception of guided waves. The axisymmetric scattering by the wall thinning extending in full circumference of a cylinder is studied with a two-dimensional FE simulation. The effect of wall thinning depth, axial extension, and the edge shape on the reflections of guided waves is discussed.
