This chapter presents a synopsis and overview of Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy (1972), which is perhaps his most nakedly autobiographical film. The director wanted to make a film told from the point of view of a psycho killer. Hitchcock's fascination with murder is well-documented but he had a distinct preference for a certain kind of English murder. He certainly seems to have had little time for the savagery of American murderers, possibly due to the fact that they lack that all-important veneer of respectability. Hitchcock's preferred killers were unassuming ‘little men’ whose carefully cultivated aura of normality masked a murderous dark side. Thus, he was particularly drawn to an unholy trinity of genteel, polite yet brutal killers, John Reginald Halliday Christie, John George Haigh, and Neville Heath. Hitchcock would go on to consider a number of writers for his cherished serial killer project. The chapter also looks at Hitchcock's Torn Curtain (1966) and Topaz (1969). It also considers his interest in Arthur La Bern's novel about a sex killer, Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square, which was published in 1966 and forwarded to the director by his UK agent.

Since social-economic systems increase interdependency, a crucial question arises: Is an interconnected world a safer or a more dangerous place to live? Over the last few years, we have witnessed the dark side of increasing interdependencies. As such, there is a growing need to focus on how to mitigate networked risk and to enhance the system resilience to the impact of a large-scale shock. The traditional engineering approach has been to design systems that are less vulnerable to damage from hazard events. On the other hand, system resilience is the ability to recover from failure and provide the continuity of system function. The goal of the present paper is to investigate the gain from risk sharing. We propose a mechanism of risk sharing that may enhance the resilience of the networked systems. The proposed risk sharing protocols are based on coordinated incentives of agents to survive collectively by absorbing external shocks. The key issue we would like to analyze is how the gain from risk sharing depends on the capacity of each agent to absorb shock and on the interconnections patterns among agents with risk sharing rules. We demonstrate that risk sharing is beneficial from a systems point of view when the agents' capacities to shocks is high and detrimental when it is low. In particular, we evaluate the effectiveness of risk sharing in two domains. In the first domain, in which networked agents have the possibility of cascading failure, risk sharing is useful in mitigating systemic failure, especially if the agents are running at high load. In the second domain, we evaluate the ratio of safe agents who invest in risky portfolios or projects collectively. In this case, risk sharing is only beneficial if the agents' risk absorbing capacity is high.

The institutional environment regulating mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is crucial for the private equity industry, especially for leveraged buyout (LBO) transactions, which are currently at the center of an intensive debate in the US, as seen in many European countries over the last decade. One of the most controversial issues of an LBO deal is associated with its ultimate economic result, often perceived as an indirect and fraudulent example of financial assistance provided by the acquired firm for the purchase of its own shares, to the detriment of its assets and stakeholders. Given the potential damage to the target’s stakeholders, LBOs have been strongly debated and even prohibited in Italy. The institutional uncertainty surrounding the legitimacy of LBOs had a negative impact on the Italian private equity market. Recently, Italy issued an innovative corporate governance reform which offered a more favorable legal environment to this type of transactions and represented an important turning point for the domestic private equity market. The institutional change, induced by the above reform, provides scholars and policy makers with guidelines on how PE transactions may be spurred with an appropriate regulation aimed at legalizing LBOs, as well as protecting the interests of the target firm and its stakeholders. Notwithstanding the new reform, several issues remain unsolved and the admissibility of certain types of LBOs is still under debate. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: a) to shed some light on the debate on the legitimacy of LBOs by emphasizing, from an economic and financial point of view, the critical features of this class of transactions, and b) to highlight unsolved problems associated with the new LBO reform, particularly with reference to the investors’ liability. The Italian buyout market, whose transactions were previously prohibited and only recently legalized, offers a unique example in order to better understand the current international debate on the admissibility of LBOs and the related consequences for the target’s stakeholders.

Purpose This paper aims to study the dark side of cooperative buyer-seller relationships to improve our knowledge of this phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach A selective definition of dark side has been adopted, linking it to relationships of a cooperative nature within which one of the two partners assumes an opportunistic behavior. Taking into account this definition, the first part of the paper critically reviews those studies which have analyzed cooperative relations along the supply chain, drawing attention to the formation of a dark side. The second part of the paper re-examines the association between cooperation and opportunism, taking the point of view of the disadvantaged partner and adopting the networking perspective developed by the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) Group. Findings The literature review enables one to identify two types of dark side. In the first case, the partner at a disadvantage is aware of what is going on, but remains trapped in the relationship because of a power imbalance and a strong dependence. In the second case, the relationship is spoilt by one partner keeping a secret from the other, exploiting an information asymmetry. The main constructs of the IMP approach have made possible to shed light on the two different types of dark side – trap and secret – that were examined from the perspective of the disadvantaged partner. Practical implications The analysis of the disadvantaged partner has made it possible to understand what strategies he can use to prevent or mitigate such a disadvantaged position. Originality/value The paper develops an original view of the phenomenon of dark side in cooperative relationships.

Purpose A Chinese proverb states: “Able people should do more work.” Although working hard is a common workplace phenomenon, does it lead to burnout in capable people? This study aims to examine the interactive effects of superior-perceived capability and subordinates’ self-efficacy on subordinate job demands, job involvement and burnout in frontline employees in the hospitality industry. Design/methodology/approach Data on 41 superiors and 161 subordinates from 16 hotels in Taiwan were collected. Hierarchical linear modeling is used to examine the research hypotheses. Findings The findings support the hypothesis that self-efficacy leads to high levels of burnout and job involvement. However, superior-perceived capability has no impact on subordinate job demand, job involvement or burnout. While job demands are positively related to the emotional exhaustion of burnout, job involvement is negatively related to depersonalization of burnout. In addition, job involvement partially mediates the relationship between self-efficacy and depersonalization of burnout. Originality/value Based on the job demands–resources theory, this study reveals the fresh point of view for the effect of self-efficacy on burnout. This paper explores the dark-side role of self-efficacy for burnout – higher self-efficacy leads to higher burnout – that is contrary to the findings from previous studies and hinges on Chinese cultural values. In addition, the current study provides guidelines for top managers to protect capable employees from burnout by enhancing intrinsic motivation and job involvement.

In this paper the effect of typical outdoor LED lamps on star visibility index SVI was analyzed. For those lamps the spectral power distribution SPD, the nearest color temperature CCT [K] and efficacy n [lm/W] are provided. For given lamp, the SVI has been defined as ratio of its scotopic flux to scotopic flux created by full moon. The calculations shows that, the use of lamps with low CCT does not significantly affect the of the value SVI. Apart from speculating about a series of issues open to debate, such as the dark side of progress and globalization or the conflict between science and morality, Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake (2003) offers a feasible insight into the state of the English language in the near future as far as the development of the lexicon is concerned. In the light of Foucault's theories on power, knowledge and discourse, this article approaches the novel from a linguistic perspective and undertakes an analysis of lexical innovation which comprises fields of interest, devices, motivations and users. The conclusions drawn from the analysis can be summarized as follows: in the first place, it is verified that the major fields of development for lexical creativity are science and technology, learning, consumerism, and media and entertainment, in other words, the fields through which number people (the group in control) exert power; secondly, from a strictly linguistic point of view, new vocabulary arises from the use of existing bases and productive word-formation devices like derivation, shortening and compounding; thirdly, the motivations behind the use of these mechanisms are critical, pragmatic, communicative and connotative, but new words are also created to ensure the perpetuation of the system; lastly, inasmuch as they form part of discourse, new items also contribute to the creation of individual and collective identities.

Resumo: O presente artigo pretende ser um duplo movimento de reflexão sobre as categorias utilizadas para tratar da história do constitucionalismo moderno. Primeiramente, apresentará a categoria de “Atlântico Negro” e suas respectivas contribuições para uma “reperiodização” da modernidade, especificamente quanto aos movimentos sociais de reivindicação de direitos. Em seguida toma um evento particular desse Atlântico Negro, a Revolução Haitiana, como prisma hermenêutico e metodológico para pensar as disputas constitucionais. Busca-se, desse modo, adotar o ponto de vista de uma filosofia da história que lide, de maneira integrada, com a modernidade e o colonialismo. Por fim, tecerá breves comentários sobre como esse duplo movimento poderá contribuir para a reflexão sobre o direito constitucional contemporâneo. Abstract: The present paper aims to be a double movement of reflection about the history of modern constitutionalism. Firstly, it introduces the “Black Atlantic” category and its respective contributions to perform a “re-periodization” of modernity, specifically in relation to social movements of human rights. Then, it takes one particular event of this Black Atlantic, the Haitian Revolution, to be a methodological and hermeneutical prism to think the constitutional struggles. Thereby, the paper intends to embrace a point of view of the philosophy of history that deals with modernity and colonialism in an integrated manner. Lastly, it shows how this double displacement can contribute to the contemporary constitutional thought.

Leader forgiveness refers to the abandonment of anger, resentment, and the desire to revenge against the offender, and it not only means forgiving errors or mistakes made by employees, but also means empathizing and understanding employees, and to see things from another point of view. This research examines the possible “dark side” of leader forgiveness by examining its influence on employee’s unethical pro-organizational behavior, as well as the mediating effect of gratitude and the moderating effect of moral identity. We used questionnaire survey methodology to collect data from 263 Chinese employees to test our hypotheses. Results show that leader forgiveness had a positive influence on employee’s unethical pro-organizational behavior, and gratitude mediated the influence of leader forgiveness on unethical pro-organizational behavior. The relationship between gratitude and unethical pro-organizational behavior, and the indirect influence of leader forgiveness on unethical pro-organizational behavior through gratitude, were moderated by moral identity. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
