Singapore is not known for astronomy research. However, the interest in astronomy has grown since the 1990s, when more educational institutions and observatories were built to equip students with the skills and knowledge in astronomy. The National University of Singapore (NUS) currently has a strong and rigorous astronomy and astrophysics programme that leads to an astrophysics specialization within the physics B.Sc. degree as well as four general education modules in astronomy and astrophysics. As experimental data is the final arbiter of any scientific theory, we emphasize the practical aspects of astronomy in this programme. We also have a state-of-the-art observatory equipped with a robotic telescope and a planetarium for tutorials. This paper outlines the philosophy, pedagogy and approach of how our NUS team has achieved a very successful undergraduate astronomy and astrophysics for aspiring Singaporean youth.

AbstractThe National Schools’ Observatory is an educational platform that offers free access to all schools in the UK and Ireland to the world’s largest robotic telescope, the Liverpool Telescope. The website offers activities, resources for teaching and importantly Go Observing, the telescope interface. The website receives 1.5 million visitors a year and has registered users in 80 countries. The next generation of robotic telescopes offer a unique opportunity to build in education, that is open and accessible to all.

<p>Asteroid families are groups of asteroids that are the product of collisions or of the rotational fission of a parent object.  These groups are mainly identified in proper elements or frequencies domains.   Because of robotic telescope surveys, the number of known asteroids has increased from about 10,000 in the early 90's to more than 750,000 nowadays. Traditional approaches for identifying new members of asteroid families, like the hierarchical clustering method (HCM), may   struggle to keep up with the growing rate of new discoveries. Here we used machine learning classification algorithms to identify new family members based on the orbital distribution in proper (a,e,sin(i)) of previously known family constituents. We compared the outcome of nine classification algorithms from stand alone and ensemble approaches.  The Extremely Randomized Trees (ExtraTree) method had the highest precision, enabling to  retrieve up to 97% of family members identified with standard HCM.</p>

The “Pi of the Sky” robotic telescope was designed to monitor a significant fraction of the sky with good time resolution and range. The main goal of the “Pi of the Sky” detector is to look for short timescale optical transients arising from various astrophysical phenomena, mainly for the optical counterparts of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB). The system design, the observation methodology and the algorithms that have been developed make this detector a sophisticated instrument for looking for novae and supernovae stars and for monitoring blasars and AGNs activity. The final detector will consist of two sets of 12 cameras, one camera covering a field of view of 20◦ ×20◦. For data taken with the prototype detector at the Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, photometry uncertainty of 0.018–0.024 magnitudo for stars 7–10m was obtained. With a new calibration algorithm taking into account the spectral type of reference stars, the stability of the photometry algorithm can be significantly improved. Preliminary results from the BGInd variable are presented, showing that uncertainty of the order of 0.013 can be obtained.

AbstractCS 1246 is a hot subdwarf B star discovered in 2009 to exhibit a single, large-amplitude radial pulsation. An O-C diagram constructed from this mode revealed reflex motion due to the presence of a low-mass M dwarf, as well as a long-term trend consistent with a decrease in the pulsational period. The orbital reflex motion was later confirmed with radial velocity measurements. Using eight years of data collected with the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network, we show that the pulsation amplitude of CS 1246 is decaying nonlinearly. We also present an updated O-C diagram, which might now indicate a positive Ṗ and a new 2.09 ± 0.05 yr oscillation consistent with orbital reflex motion of the entire inner sdB+dM binary, possibly due to the gravitational influence of a circumbinary planet with minimum mass
