The present study concerns the prosodic structure of Greek as a function of word stress and focus as well as statement and yes/no question sentence type distinctions. It is argued that the word stress distinction has a local domain whereas focus, statement and question distinctions have a global domain. Word stress has a lengthening effect on all segmental constituents of the stressed syllable and especially on vowel in combination with an intensity increase whereas the tonal pattern is variable in accordance with the global context. The focus distinction has no lengthening effect locally and may show variable tonal patterns locally and globally depending on the global context. The statement and yes/no sentence type distinction has variable prosodic patterns locally and globally and shows multiple interactions with variable focus applications.

 Tujuan PKM ini untuk memberikan pemahaman  tentang pentingnya word stress  dan membantu guru bahasa Inggris  dalam melatih  siswa SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang dalam menyebutkan kosakata buah-buahan dengan penekanan kosakata yang tepat  dalam bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang menyenangkan dan menarik.Hasil dari angket yang didistribusikan kepada kepalsa sekolah, guru dan 25 siswa menunjukan (1)Semua respondent (100%) menyatakan  pembuatan  media pembelajaran audio-visual  untuk  pengajaran word stress-oriented bertemakan fruits ini  bermanfaat  dalam membantu para guru dan para siswa SD Muhammadiyah 16 menumbuhkan pemahaman tentang pentingnya word stress pada pronunciation (2)Media pembelajaran audio visual yang dibuat tim PKM merupakan media pembelajaran yang menarik  dan  para siswa merasa lebih tertarik , senang dan santai  saat pembelajaran  berlangsung. Dari segi kebermanfaatan dan tujuannya, hasil angket menunjukan  kegiatan PKM ini mampu  menumbuhkan motivasi para guru bahasa Inggris pada SD Muhammadiyah 16 Palembang untuk  membuat media pembelajaran yang kreatif dan inovatif  untuk pembelajaran bahasa inggris  yang lebih  variatif.       Keywords: audio visual, fruits, media, word stress-oriented.

This chapter examines expressions of commands (imperatives) in Wolaitta and the ways in which the imperative is distinguished from statements and questions. Although each sentence type is formally distinct, imperatives and questions share a number of morpho-syntactic properties. Similar to declarative and interrogative sentences, imperatives in Wolaitta involve verbal grammatical categories such as the distinction of person, number, and gender of the subject as well as negative and positive polarity. In contrast to previous studies, the present contribution establishes the function of a set of morphemes based on -árk and -érk to be the expression of plea or appeal to an addressee rather than politeness when issuing a command. Instead, politeness in commands is expressed by using plural (pro)nominal and verbal elements. The imperative in Wolaitta is a robust construction which is also used in formulaic speeches such as leave-taking as well as in blessing, curses, and advice.

In this study, we examined eye movements and comprehension in sentences containing a relative clause. To date, few studies have focused on syntactic processing in dyslexia and so one goal of the study is to contribute to this gap in the experimental literature. A second goal is to contribute to theoretical psycholinguistic debate concerning the cause and the location of the processing difficulty associated with object-relative clauses. We compared dyslexic readers (n = 50) to a group of non-dyslexic controls (n = 50). We also assessed two key individual differences variables (working memory and verbal intelligence), which have been theorised to impact reading times and comprehension of subject- and object-relative clauses. The results showed that dyslexics and controls had similar comprehension accuracy. However, reading times showed participants with dyslexia spent significantly longer reading the sentences compared to controls (i.e., a main effect of dyslexia). In general, sentence type did not interact with dyslexia status. With respect to individual differences and the theoretical debate, we found that processing difficulty between the subject and object relatives was no longer significant when individual differences in working memory were controlled. Thus, our findings support theories, which assume that working memory demands are responsible for the processing difficulty incurred by (1) individuals with dyslexia and (2) object-relative clauses as compared to subject relative clauses.

The Russian pentameter is historically associated with the English and German traditions, but typologically it has with some justice been compared to the French decasyllable. The present article analyzes the structure and cultural context of Russian pentameter and examines in detail the use of caesura in a small corpus of iambic pentameter poems by Afanasy Fet. It is shown that the use of caesura correlates with patterns of word stress. In particular, the appearance of caesuraed lines in poems in which caesura is relatively weak correlates with the stress patterns of the lines in question: caesuraed lines are less heavily stressed than uncaesuraed ones, a correlation that theoretically should promote equalization of line length across the text. Russian poetry has a general tendency to promote equality of line length, and the intrusion of occasional I6 lines into I5 texts, a phenomenon known in many Russian I5 poems, can be viewed as a related strategy for handling ragged I5 lines.
