Humans consuming vegetarian-based diets are observed to have reduced relative risk for many chronic diseases. Similarly, regular physical activity has also been shown to assist in preventing, and reducing the severity of these conditions. Many people, including athletes, acknowledge these findings and are adopting a vegetarian-based diet to improve their health status. Furthermore, athletes are incorporating this approach with the specific aim of optimizing physical performance. To examine the evidence for the relationship between consuming a predominately vegetarian-based diet and improved physical performance, a systematic literature review was performed using the SCOPUS database. No date parameters were set. The keywords vegetarian OR vegan AND sport OR athlete OR training OR performance OR endurance were used to identify relevant literature. Included studies (i) directly compared a vegetarian-based diet to an omnivorous/mixed diet, (ii) directly assessed physical performance, not biomarkers of physical performance, and (iii) did not use supplementation emulating a vegetarian diet. Reference lists were hand searched for additional studies. Seven randomized controlled trials and one cross-sectional study met the inclusion criteria. No distinguished differences between vegetarian-based diets and omnivorous mixed diets were identified when physical performance was compared. Consuming a predominately vegetarian-based diet did not improve nor hinder performance in athletes. However, with only 8 studies identified, with substantial variability among the studies’ experimental designs, aims and outcomes, further research is warranted.

Abstract Objectives: There are reports that vegetarians, due to the specificity of their diet, may be at risk of orthorexia nervosa (ON), although researchers' opinions are not consistent. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the motivation to use vegetarian diet and the personality traits as well as the tendency to ON. Methods: The study group comprised 480 vegetarians aged 18-40 years (414 women) divided into 3 groups: G1 - semi-vegetarians (n=60), G2 - lacto-ovo-vegetarians, ovo-vegetarians, lacto-vegetarians (n=238) and G3 - vegans, raw foodists and fruitarians (n=182). The questionnaire determining the motivation for vegetarian diet, Neuroticism-ExtraversionOpenness - Five Factor Inventory Personality Inventory and Bratman Test of Orthorexia were used. Results: No significant differences in the level of ON risk were observed between the groups. BMI was significantly lower in G3 than in G1 and G2. In G3 vegetarian diet was used for the longest time, and the highest level of ethical and health motivation to undertake this diet compared to the other respondents was seen (p<0.0001). The study revealed the lowest level of agreeableness in the G1. The neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and ethical motivation to diet were positive predictors of ON, while agreeableness and experience with diet were its negative predictors (F=9.26, p<0.001, R2=0.12).Conclusion: It is concluded that personality traits, type of motivation to undertake a vegetarian diet and diet duration are associated with the risk of ON in vegetarians.Level of Evidence: Level V, cross-sectional descriptive study

Abstract Background: Depression and sarcopenia are common diseases in the elderly population. However, the association between them is controversial. Based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) database, a cross-sectional study was conducted to explore the relationship between calf circumference, physical performance, and depression. Methods: From the 8th wave of CLHLS conducted in 2018, data on calf circumference, physical performance, depressive symptoms, and demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related characteristics were collected. A statistical analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between calf circumference, physical performance, and depressive symptoms. Confounding factors were adjusted for in the multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 12,227 participants, including 5689 (46.5%) men and 6538 (53.5%) women (mean age, 83.4 years), were included in this study. After adjusting for confounding factors, the association between calf circumference and depression disappeared (odds ratio [OR] = 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.92–1.17, p = 0.58). However, a significant inverse correlation persisted between physical performance and depressive symptoms (OR = 1.16, 95% CI: 1.13–1.20, p<0.001). The subgroup analysis revealed a significant association of calf circumference (OR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.04–1.62, p = 0.02) and physical performance (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.08–1.22, p < 0.001) with depression in the regular exercise group. Conclusions: Physical performance was significantly associated with depression in the elderly Chinese population. Attention should be paid to assess depressive symptoms in patients with poor muscle condition.

Abstract: Examination of blood creatinine levels is one of the parameters used to assess renalfunction, since serum and urinary excretion concentrations within 24 hours are relatively constant. However, in another clinical guideline, there is a type of examination that is more recommended inmost patients with the risk of kidney failure, urine albumin test. In the event of renal dysfunction, the ability of creatinine filtration will decrease and serum creatinine will increase as well as somesubstances that should not exist in the urine, such as albumin, to appear. Reduced albumin excretion in the urine may be able to slow the rate of renal failure and help to delay the body’s need forkidney or dialysis transplantation. This cross-sectional study aims to analyze the relationship between serum creatinine and albuminuria in patients with kidney disease. Serum creatinine levelexamination by Jaffe method and urine albumin examination were qualitatively performed on therespondents who met the inclusion criteria. A total of 92 data were then analyzed by Chi-squarewith α<0,05. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant relationship betweenserum creatinine and albuminuria levels in patients with general kidney disease (p = 0.000, r =0.728), and in male patients (p = 0.000, r = 0.736) and females (p = 0,000; r = 0.686) with theage level 41-50 years. There is no relationship between serum creatinine and albuminuria in maleand female patients at the age of 20-30 years and 31–40 years.

Pleural effusion is present when there is >15ml of fluid is accumulated in the pleural space. It can be divided into two types; exudative and transudative pleural effusion. Tuberculosis and parapneumonic effusion are the common cause of exudative pleural effusion whereas heart failure accounts for most of the cases of transudative pleural effusion. This study was a hospital based cross sectional study performed at Nepal Medical College during the period of January 2016-December 2016. A total of 50 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Pleural effusion was confirmed by clinical examination and radiology. After confirmation of pleural effusion, pleural fluid was aspirated and was analysed for protein, LDH, cholesterol. The Heffner criteria was compared with Light criteria to classify exudative or transudative pleural effusion. Among 50 patients, 30 were male and 20 were female. The mean age of patient was 45.4±21.85 years. The sensitivity and specificity of using Light criteria to detect the two type of pleural effusion was 100% and 90.9%, whereas using Heffner criteria was 94.87%, 100% respectively(P<0.01). There are variety of causes for development of pleural effusion and no one criteria is definite to differentiate between exudative or transudative effusion. In this study Light criteria was more sensitive whereas Heffner criteria was more specific to classify exudative pleural effusion. Hence a combination of criteria might be useful in case where there is difficulty to identify the cause of pleural effusion.
