This study developed a model that predicted factors that prompt the intention to take the COVID-19 vaccine among Nigerians. Data were collected from 385 respondents across Nigeria using snowball sampling technique with online questionnaire as instrument. Results indicated that cues to action, health motivation, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control positively predicted the intention to take COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria. However, perceived susceptibility, severity, and COVID-19 vaccine benefits did not predict the intention to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Further findings showed that COVID-19 vaccine barrier and attitude was negatively associated with the intention to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Abstract Objectives: There are reports that vegetarians, due to the specificity of their diet, may be at risk of orthorexia nervosa (ON), although researchers' opinions are not consistent. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the motivation to use vegetarian diet and the personality traits as well as the tendency to ON. Methods: The study group comprised 480 vegetarians aged 18-40 years (414 women) divided into 3 groups: G1 - semi-vegetarians (n=60), G2 - lacto-ovo-vegetarians, ovo-vegetarians, lacto-vegetarians (n=238) and G3 - vegans, raw foodists and fruitarians (n=182). The questionnaire determining the motivation for vegetarian diet, Neuroticism-ExtraversionOpenness - Five Factor Inventory Personality Inventory and Bratman Test of Orthorexia were used. Results: No significant differences in the level of ON risk were observed between the groups. BMI was significantly lower in G3 than in G1 and G2. In G3 vegetarian diet was used for the longest time, and the highest level of ethical and health motivation to undertake this diet compared to the other respondents was seen (p<0.0001). The study revealed the lowest level of agreeableness in the G1. The neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and ethical motivation to diet were positive predictors of ON, while agreeableness and experience with diet were its negative predictors (F=9.26, p<0.001, R2=0.12).Conclusion: It is concluded that personality traits, type of motivation to undertake a vegetarian diet and diet duration are associated with the risk of ON in vegetarians.Level of Evidence: Level V, cross-sectional descriptive study

Abstract Background Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a simple and inexpensive method for early diagnosis of breast cancer. This study aimed to determine the effect of a smartphone application on women’s performance and health beliefs regarding BSE. Methods In this quasi-experimental study, 150 women referring to therapeutic clinics in Jahrom, Iran from December 2019 to May 2020 were randomly assigned to an intervention or a control group. The intervention group participants had access to a smartphone application including BSE reminder, training, alarm, and feedback to the therapist. The application also contained educational movies and self-assessment. The study data were collected using Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale and BSE information record form before and six months after the intervention. Then, the data were entered into the SPSS 21 software and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, independent t-test, Chi-square, ANCOVA, Mann–Whitney, and Wilcoxon tests. Results After the intervention, the largest number of BSEs was four times among 60% of the participants in the intervention group and once among 24% of the participants in the control group during four months (p = 0.001). After the intervention, the mean differences of the scores of perceived susceptibility (1.03 ± 2.65 vs. 0.01 ± 0.42, p = 0.001), BSE barriers (2.80 ± 5.32 vs.  0.04 ± 1.43, p = 0.001), self-efficacy (10.75 ± 7.63 vs. − 2.75 ± 2.44, p = 0.001), and health motivation (2.77 ± 3.70 vs. − 0.29 ± 0.63, p = 0.001) were significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group. However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups with regard to perceived severity and BSE benefits after the intervention. Conclusions Access to the smartphone application enhanced the participants’ performance and health beliefs regarding BSE in the areas of perceived susceptibility, self-efficacy, and health motivation. Therefore, we recommend using the same smartphone application to improve women’s performance and health beliefs regarding BSE.

This study aims to determine the influence of the constructs of the health belief model and fear of dementia on the behavioral intention to prevent middle-aged Korean adults’ dementia. Applying a descriptive design, 163 middle-aged adults were recruited. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data regarding fear of dementia, behavioral intention to prevent dementia, the expanded health belief model’s variables (i.e., perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barrier, cues to action, general health motivation, and self-efficacy), and other general characteristics between August and September 2019. The determinants of the behavioral intention for dementia prevention were identified through hierarchical regression analysis. The significant factors influencing the behavioral intention for dementia prevention were general health motivation and self-efficacy, accounting for 34.2% of the variance. The results revealed key factors that should be considered in future interventions to enhance adherence concerning dementia-preventive behaviors.

PurposeThis research was planned and applied as a descriptive study in order to determine the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about testicular cancer (TC) and testicular self-examination (TSE) of male students who receiving health education.Design/methodology/approachThis descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between May and August 2019 with male students. Early diagnosis of TC is quite important in terms of prognosis of the disease. The data were collected by using the questionnaire prepared by the researchers in accordance with the literature and the Turkish version of health belief model scale (HBMS) for TSE. The data were analyzed by number, percentage, mean and standard deviation and t test.FindingsTSE HBMS, it was observed that the mean score of susceptibility subscale was 11.23 ± 3.73, the mean score of seriousness subscale was 28.20 ± 7.66, the mean score of benefit subscale was 21.57 ± 5.90, the mean score of the barriers subscale was 22.74 ± 5.16, the mean score of self-efficacy subscale was 9.91 ± 3.13 and the mean score of the health motivation subscale was 8.92 ± 2.84.Originality/valueThere was a statistically significant relationship between having heard of TC and health motivation (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant relationship between the knowledge of TC and self-efficacy and health motivation (p < 0.05). There was a significant relationship between self-efficacy and TSE performing status (p < 0.05). There was also a significant relationship between the desire to obtain information about TSE and seriousness, barriers, self-efficacy and health motivation (p < 0.05). It was determined that majority of university students did not have any information about TC and TSE.

Objective The College Students’ Health Motivation Questionnaire (CSHM-Q) is used to measure motivation for a healthy lifestyle among emerging adults. This study sought to validate the CSHM-Q using the Rasch measurement model. Methods 322 participants were recruited based on a convenience sampling method. The Rasch analysis was carried out using the RUMM2030 software. Results Local item dependency was accommodated using the ‘super item’ approach. Disordered thresholds were resolved by collapsing some response options. After modification, each component of the CSHM-Q showed acceptable overall fit, item and person fit, internal consistency, and targeting. Unidimensionality was supported at the subscale level. Items did not exhibit disordered threshold, local item dependency, or differential item functioning. Transforming tables were also created to help convert the raw score into an interval scale. Conclusions Results of the Rasch analysis supported the interval scale measurement properties of the CSHM-Q and offered health education researchers an instrument to measure emerging adults’ health motivation in the higher education context.

Background and PurposeThe global increase in prevalence of individuals with end-stage renal disease is a rising concern. Self-care is an essential and important component of chronic disease management. Poor self-care in patients receiving hemodialysis is associated with an increased risk of mortality and hospitalization. This study aimed to identify predictive factors for self-care in patients receiving hemodialysis based on a middle-range theory of self-care for chronic illness.MethodsAdult patients with end-stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis were recruited at an artificial kidney unit in a general hospital. Data from 131 patients were analyzed. Self-report questionnaires assessed hemodialysis-related knowledge, health motivation, self-efficacy, social support, access to care, and self-care.ResultsParticipants who had a family caregiver showed significantly higher selfcare scores than those who did not, and self-care scores were higher in patients who reported hypertension as a causal disease of end-stage renal disease than in those who did not. Self-care was significantly correlated with knowledge, health motivation, self-efficacy, social support, and access to care. The study’s regression model showed that self-efficacy, health motivation, and knowledge were predictive variables influencing self-care, and the explanatory power of this model was 55.9%.Implications for PracticeThe results support the middle-range theory of self-care for chronic illness. Strategies and education to improve self-efficacy, health motivation, and knowledge must be incorporated when designing self-care programs. Nursing interventions that patients can participate in with their family members might facilitate improving self-care.

Abstract BackgroundAromatase inhibitor therapy induces bone loss and risk of fracture in postmenopausal breast cancer survivors (PBCS). Targetable patient-level factors to mitigate osteoporosis risk in this population are underreported. Here, we assessed the association between osteoporosis knowledge and beliefs, receipt of bone mineral density, and osteoporosis preventive behaviors among PBCS. MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, early stage PBCS with diabetes mellitus (ages 55-86 years) completed the Facts on Osteoporosis Quiz, Osteoporosis Health Beliefs Scale, and Osteoporosis Preventive Behaviors cross-sectional questionnaires. Multivariate logistic regression assessed factors associated with engagement in strength-training exercise.ResultsMean age was 66.1 years with 20% self-reporting as non-Hispanic White, 40% non-Hispanic Black, 27% Hispanic, and 13% other. Osteoporosis knowledge (10.5±3.4), seriousness (14.9±3.8), and susceptibility (14.0±3.5) mean scores were low. Most (75%) PBCS were adherent to calcium and vitamin D supplements, but only 47% reported engagement in strength-training exercises. Married/partnered, higher osteoporosis knowledge and health motivation scores were associated with exercise. After adjustment of marital status and osteoporosis knowledge, only health motivation was associated with exercise (OR 5.56, 95% CI 1.35-22.93). ConclusionsPBCS are motivated to keep a healthy lifestyle despite limited osteoporosis knowledge, perceived risk, and susceptibility. However, <50% participated in strength-training exercise. Oncologic care should include osteoporosis and fracture prevention strategies, directed at encouraging cancer survivors to increase engagement in strength-training exercises and calcium intake.
