ABSTRACT  Akway (Drimys piperita) is a woody, evergreen and aromatic plant that belongs to family winteraceae. This plant is used by Sougb tribe lived in Sururey village, District of Anggi, to enhance the vitality of body. The objectives of the research were to determine antimicrobial stability of akway bark extracts influenced by heating time of 100OC, levels of acidity (pH) and salt contents.. Antimicrobial assays were done by using agar well diffusion method against four species of bacteria, i.e.  Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Bacillus cereus ATCC10876, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923. The results showed that ethanolic extracts of akway bark only inhibited growth of B. cereus and S. aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration 0,99% and 0,89% . The levels of concentration and acidity of ethanol extracts  influenced the antimicrobial capacity of extracts.. Whereas heating time on 100OC during 25 minutes and salt contents  up to 5% of extract solution did not influence the antimicrobial stability of  akway bark extracts.

Aspirates of pus from perirectal abscesses in 28 children were studied for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. A total of 87 isolates (64 anaerobic and 23 aerobic) were recovered from the patients, an average of 2.3 anaerobes and 0.8 aerobes per specimen. Anaerobic organisms alone were recovered from 15 specimens (54%), and in nine specimens (32%) they were mixed with aerobic organisms. Aerobic organisms were recovered in pure culture in only four patients (14%). The predominant anaerobic organisms were Bacteroides sp (32 isolates, including 14 B fragilis group and seven B melaninogenicus group), Gram-positive anaerobic cocci(15), Fusobacterium sp (six), and Clostridium sp (three). The predominant aerobic organisms were Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (six of each), group A β-hemolytic streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus morganii (two of each). Five children had a serious underlying chronic disease; three of these had an accompanying bacteremia and two died. Incision and drainage were performed on all patients: some children also received parenteral, or oral antibiotic treatment, or both.

Often dialysis -associated peritonitis is treated before the results of cultures are known with a cephalosporin and an aminoglycoside in combination. Because there may be antagonism between the individual drugs in such combinations, we have investigated this possibility through the use of timed, killing curves in dialysate effluent. We tested various cephalosporins and aminoglycosides alone and in combination at concentrations usually instilled into the peritoneum and determined their activity against one strain each of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The results of these in-vitro studies show no evidence of antagonism but rather suggest an additive effect as evidenced by more rapid killing.

Two procedures were used to modify gauze bandages, polyester sutures, silicone tubing, and polyvinyl chloride tubing. In one procedure, the materials were first modified by in situ precipitation of metallic hydroxides and then used to adsorb silver ions. In the second procedure, the materials were soaked in sodium pyrophosphate or sodium chloride, dried, and then soaked in silver nitrate. These procedures produced materials with silver deposited on the surface of the tubing and sutures and both on the surface and within the gauze fibers. The modified materials inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. Key words: tubing, sutures, bandages, antibacterial.
