Increased global trade coupled with diversified employment opportunities have generated demand for college graduates to possess enhanced interpersonal and foreign communication skills and a well-developed understanding of foreign culture. Horticultural employment opportunities also require students to possess a mastery of horticultural theory with an established record of direct, hands-on experience. Despite these needs, financial limitations of students and academic departments coupled with a lack of available opportunities may restrict students from developing these critical skills. Through development of cooperative learning programs, students have an opportunity to master and refine their horticultural skills while simultaneously raising funds, which are allocated for professional development including an international learning program. This article provides a successful overview of a student-based cooperative learning program that enhances student learning opportunities.

As several recent National Academies of Sciences reports have highlighted, greater science communication research is needed on 1) communicating chemistry, and 2) building research-practice partnerships to advance communication across science issues. Here we report our insights in both areas, gathered from a multi-year collaboration to advance our understanding of how to communicate about chemistry with the public. Researchers and practitioners from science museums across the U.S. partnered with academic social scientists in science communication to develop and conduct multi-strand data collections on chemistry communication and informal education. Our focus was on increasing interest in, the perceived relevance of, and self-efficacy concerning chemistry through hands-on activities and connecting chemistry to broader themes concerning everyday life and societal impacts. We outline challenges and benefits of the project that future collaborations can gain from and illustrate how our strands of work complemented each other to create a more complete picture of public perceptions of chemistry.


This chapter presents the recommendations of the Puttnam Report. It covers recommendations for the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, and Channel 5. It proposes the establishment of a new fund for public service content. It also discusses the dissatisfaction with the performance of public service television from ethnic, regional, national and faith-based minorities; the failure of the public service television system to reflect the changing constitutional shape of the UK such that audiences in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the English regions; the decline in investment in some of the genres traditionally associated with public service television: arts, current affairs and children's programming; and the need for a more consolidated approach to maximising entry-level opportunities and increasing investment in training and professional development at all levels of the industry.

<p>This report explores the first iteration of a teacher professional development courselet grounded in constructionist theory and activities. This online teacher professional development (oTPD) courselet provided opportunities for teachers to engage in just-in-time, ongoing TPD within a social networking site for educators. The topic of the oTPD was Robotics and Hands-on Activities in the Classroom. The courselet was designed for teachers who are interested in integrating constructionist pedagogies into their practice. Key findings of the first delivery of the oTPD courselet point to a need for flexible access, sharing of resources, and support for constructionist pedagogical activities as a PD value for participants. Findings further support the potential for an ongoing online community of practice around robotics in the classroom. The approach taken in this oTPD courselet of study continues to inform a model of oTPD delivery within a social-networking-enabled environment.</p>

In keeping with the new era of information and ecology, the urgent mission of the architect is how to provide the latest green house information and some of the practices and relevant hands-on experiences for the public. In 2012, the Museum of Science and Industry of Chicago built a green house in its yard. The green house exhibition-Smart Home: Green + Wired highlights the importance of environmentally friendly effort. The exhibition intents to present for residents and visitors on how green house could help improve the environment as well as save money. The exhibition also focuses on the purpose of working together: the academia of architecture, the industrial companies and the public, trying to conserve and protect Chicago for future generations. Furthermore, with the introduction of Smart Home, this essay aims to inspire the deeper thinking about popularity of green architecture in China.

This article describes a model program designed to increase involvement of gifted girls in science with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of women in scientific and science related fields. This article discusses background information and related research concerning why we started a ‘girls only’ program. Basic components of the program include parental involvement, female role models, hands-on investigations and enjoyment of science activities. There are brief descriptions of two sample activities which stress self-confidence, use of equipment and the process of investigation. This model has been implemented at this institution as well as being adapted and modified in the public sector.

In the developed world, teachers are compelled to be professional in handling instructional process for students’ optimum learning. There are many ways for teacher professionalism. This study deals with an exploratory survey to probe EFL teachers’ views of teacher professionalism at the public and private lower secondary levels of education on the areas for professional development or learning. A number of  302 EFL teachers of the lower secondary level of education are conveniently drawn from a number of cities/regencies as samples of the present study representing EFL teachers with diverse teaching experiences in East Java. A questionnaire was developed to collect data on their ideas connected with aspects of developing themselves professionally. The results of the present study are discussed pertaining  to EFL teacher normative responsibilities and concepts on professional development/learning. Pedagogical and theoretical implications of the findings are drawn with reference to the context of English instruction.
