Diagnostic histopathology departments are experiencing unprecedented economic and service pressures, and many institutions are now considering digital pathology as part of the solution. In this document, a follow on to our case for adoption report, we provide information and advice to help departments create their own clear, succinct, individualised business case for the clinical deployment of digital pathology.

This document clarifies the strategic context of digital pathology adoption, defines the different use cases a healthcare provider may wish to consider as part of a digital adoption and summarises existing reasons for digital adoption and its potential benefits. The reader is provided with references to the relevant literature, and illustrative case studies. The authors hope this report will be of interest to healthcare providers, pathology managers, departmental heads, pathologists and biomedical scientists that are considering digital pathology, deployments or preparing business cases for digital pathology adoption in clinical settings. The information contained in this document can be shared and used in any documentation the reader wishes to present for their own institutional case for adoption report or business case.

BackgroundWhole slide imaging (WSI) has diverse applications in modern pathology practice, including providing histopathology services to remote locations.Materials and methodsUtilising an existing contractual partnership with a Northern Ontario group of hospitals, the feasibility of using WSI for primary diagnostic services from Toronto was explored by the dedicated working group. All aspects explored from information technology (IT), laboratory information system (LIS) integration, scanning needs, laboratory workflow and pathologist needs and training, were taken into account in the developing the rationale and business case.ResultsThe financial outlay for a scanner was $CA180K (approximately £105.6 k) after discounts. There were no human resource requirements as staff were reorganised to cater for slide scanning. Additional IT/LIS costs were not incurred as existing connectivity was adapted to allow two site groups (gastrointestinal and skin) to pilot this study. Scanned slides were available for pathologist review 24–96 hours sooner than glass slides; there was a 2-day improvement for final authorised cases, and per annum savings were: $CA26 000 (£15.2 k) in courier costs, $CA60 000 (£35.2 k) travel and $CA45 000 (£26.4 k) in accommodation, meals and car rental expense.ConclusionWSI is a viable solution to provide timely, high-quality and cost efficient histopathology services to underserviced, remote areas.

Identification of cellular phenotype by cell surface antigens in conjunction with ultrastructural analysis of cellular morphology can be a useful tool in the study of biologic processes as well as in diagnostic histopathology. In this abstract, we describe a simple pre-embedding, protein A-gold staining method which is designed for cell suspensions combining the handling convenience of slide-mounted cell monolayers and the ability to evaluate specimen staining specificity prior to EM embedding.

Current supply chain methods are having difficulties in resolving problems arising from the lack of trust in supply chains. The root reason lies in two challenges brought to the traditional mechanism: self-interests of supply chain members and information asymmetry in production processes. Blockchain is a promising technology to address these problems. The key objective of this paper is to present qualitative analysis for blockchain in supply chain as the decision-making framework to implement this new technology. The analysis method used Val IT business case framework, validated by the expert judgements. The further study needs to be elaborated by either the existing organization that use blockchain or assessment by the organization that will use blockchain to improve their supply chain management.

Linking with the business case for diversity, this study examines whether the top management team (TMT) and the board of directors (BODs) diversity has a positive impact on financial institution (FI) performance in select countries of Asia least researched domain. We use data from 119 financial institutions across Asia for the year 2015, initially 1,447 institutions; however, incomplete data was excluded from final analysis. We use three proxies for diversity, that is, nationality diversity, gender diversity, and age diversity of TMT and BODs. To investigate the impact of TMT and BODs diversity, cross-sectional ordinary least-squares estimation is applied, using Return on Average Assets (ROAA%) as a measure of performance.  We find that nationality diversity and age diversity is positively and significantly related to FIs performance. Our evidence indicates that executives and board members with diverse exposure and younger age improve FIs profitability. However, there is no significant relationship between gender and FIs performance.
