To provide a quality and sustainable education, each study program needs to evaluate the effectiveness and productivity of education, one of which is using indicator of the length of the study. The length of study is influenced by various factors. In this study observations and evaluations of the factors affecting the study period of students of Study Program of Mathematics at Andalas University were conducted by using CART (Classification and Regression Tree) method. The results showed that the most significant factor influencing the length of the study is the Grade Point Average (GPA). Students with high GPA will have a higher chance of graduating on time. Another factor influencing the length of the study is student achievement during high school. Students who consistently perform well (always get the highest rank) when in high school have a high chance of graduating on time. The analysis also showed that students who joined the organization while in high school had a higher chance of graduating on time than those who did not participate. The interesting thing is the students who choose the Study Program of Mathematics at Andalas University as the third choice had a higher chance of graduating on time than the students who choose it as the first or second choice.

Abstract Objective: To estimate the prevalence of back pain in adolescent girls, and determine whether this pain is associated with socioeconomic, demographic, anthropometric, and behavioral factors. Methods: This was an epidemiological survey with a representative sample of 495 female high school students, aged 14 to 18 years, in the municipality of São Leopoldo in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire with closed, standardized, coded, and tested questions. Bivariate analysis included the chi-square test (x2) and calculation of prevalence ratios (α<0.05). Results: The prevalence of back pain was 75.2%. The thoracic-lumbar (30.4%) and lumbar (27.7%) regions of the spine were most affected. Among the students with pain, 60.5% reported the severity of their pain to be moderate to severe, and 21.2% reported that the pain prevented them from performing activities of daily living. Regarding associated factors, the pain was more prevalent in overweight/obese students (RP = 1.246, 95% CI: 1.137 to 1.366), who reported carrying a heavy school backpack/bag (PR = 1.187, 95% CI: 1.073 to 1.314) and those who had incorrect posture when picking up objects from the floor (PR = 1.138, 95% CI: 1.031 to 1.256). Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of back pain associated with body mass index, reported weight of the student's school backpack/bag, and posture when picking up objects from the floor.

This study aimed to examine the effect of sociodemographic, student and school factors on the academic achievement of high school students in Indonesia. Using the cross-sectional survey data from the 2015 Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) particularly involving 1,421 respondents (of the academic performances during their school years), the study run multiple regression analysis to examine the influences of their parents’ sociodemographic, students and other school-related factors on their academic achievements during their school years. As the results, it was revealed that the sociodemographic factors, students and schools predict significantly academic achievement of students in Indonesia. The results provided feedback to students and parents, schools and education policymakers in improving student academic achievement.

Background:Commuting reflects an important opportunity for youth to engage in physical activity. This study aimed to compare modes of commuting to school and to work and to identify sociodemographic factors associated with various modes of transportation. Methods:Epidemiologic study with a repeated cross-sectional design. Participants included high school students (15–19 years of age) from Santa Catarina state, Brazil, in 2001 (n = 5028) and 2011 (n = 6529). A questionnaire containing information on the type of transport used to commute to school and to work was administered.Results:Walking/bicycling and the use of the bus to commute to school and to work remained stable after a decade; however, the use of car/motorcycle to school (6.4% versus 12.6%) and to work (10.2% versus 19.7%) increased significantly. In both cases, females more frequently used buses, whereas males commuted to work by car/bus. Students from rural areas more commonly commuted to school by car/motorcycle, whereas those from urban areas traveled to work more by bus. There was a greater use of cars/motorcycles by young people from higher-income families. Conclusions:The use of cars/motorcycles to commute to school/work has almost doubled in the last decade. Sex, residential area and income were associated with passive commuting.
