The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Ad Hoc Committee organized a luncheon symposium with a distinguished panel of experts to discuss how to ensure a diverse surgical workforce. The panelists discussed the current state of DEI efforts within surgical departments and societal demographic changes that inform and necessitate surgical workforce adaptations. Concrete recommendations included the following: obtain internal data, establish DEI committee, include bias training, review hiring and compensation practices, support the department members doing the DEI work, commit adequate funding, be intentional with DEI efforts, and develop and support alternate pathways for promotion and tenure.

This paper introduces the methodology RWDI has developed, tested and consolidated over the years working in close collaboration with bridge designers, owners and operators, for the multi-hazard assessment of existing bridges and the ad hoc development of a structural health monitoring programme leading to enhanced resiliency. The work is highlighted through the presentation of a case study for a 2,725 m long cantilever bridge built in 1930. The dynamics of the structure in its current state were characterised and its capacity to today and future wind loading was assessed fully following the proposed methodology prior to the initiation of a structural rehabilitation program to extend the design life of the bridge beyond its 150th anniversary.

Purpose Since Masaaki Imai coined the term Kaizen in the mid-1980s, it has been seen as a key element for the competitiveness of Japanese companies, and it is currently a widely discussed philosophy and is applied in a wide range of organizations throughout the world. The purpose of this paper is to serve as guidance for researchers who are developing their studies in the field of the Kaizen philosophy, in order to improve their knowledge on the most relevant articles, the most productive authors or the key scientific journals that make up this subject. Design/methodology/approach In order to fulfill the proposed objective, a descriptive bibliometric study was carried out with the analysis of citations from 138 articles included in the multidisciplinary database Scopus (Elsevier) until 2016. For the search of documents, a tracking strategy was chosen that allowed for the development of the ad hoc database required to analyze each of the basic variables of the bibliometric indicators. Findings The results obtained show a growing interest of the scientific community in its study in the last decade, as shown by the significant increase in citations received by articles, despite the reduction in the number of papers published in the last two years. Research limitations/implications The main limitations are derived from the choice of a specific database, as well as the specific search equation. Originality/value The study presents an in-depth analysis of the current state of research regarding the Kaizen philosophy through its bibliometric study, providing useful information for academics and professionals by providing a series of significant indicators to measure the bibliographic material.

Abstract. The present study holds the objective to observe the current state of Physical Education (PE) as a discipline through research based on the experience and the knowledge of active professionals. An ad-hoc questionnaire was completed by 36 active professionals (specialist teachers in PE) who participate in the practicum of majors of PE in the 4th year of Primary Education Bachelor. The instrument intends to bring to light the real problems of teaching, as well as the importance and the social impact that PE has as an educational subject. It also aims to share different points of view of active professionals and make proposals to improve the training of PE professionals. As conclusions of the study, most consider motivation as a factor and condition to promote the success of PE as a curricular subject and believe that cooperative work should be encouraged. The most valued characteristics of PE teachers are: knowing how to work as a PE team and the use of educational innovation projects that are flexible and adapt to the context, resulting in significant learning. Professionals consider that motor skills should be enhanced by applying active, dynamic and reflective methodologies and give great importance to ongoing learning. Therefore, proposals include training courses and exchanges of experiences.

The aim of the study is to analyze the current state of arbitration system in the Russian Federation and also the consequences of procedural legislation reform, which has become a trigger for transformations in the system of arbitration courts. The authors consider the creation mechanisms and some aspects of arbitration institution functioning, based on the norms of the current legislation. This review is given both in relation to permanent arbitration institutions and in relation to the courts created to consider one specific dispute. In the course of this study, the authors found that a gap in legal regulation remained after the arbitration legislation reform, since it remains possible to create ad hoc "pocket" courts instead of abolished arbitration courts at any institutions. And if initially it seemed that this problem would be solved, now it is necessary to fight against such a mechanical opportunity to get the necessary “comfortable” judges.

The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) promotes occupational health nursing by participating in national and state deliberations on credentialing issues. In 1995, AAOHN established the Credentialing Ad Hoc Committee to examine the impact of credentialing on occupational health nursing practice. As one effort by this Committee to clarify credentialing and the issues affecting the occupational health nurse, a series of three articles will appear in AAOHN Journal. This article defines credentialing and describes some of the issues affecting occupational health nursing. The second article will be based on the 1997 American Occupational Health Conference, Catherine Dempsey lecture elaborating on the future of credentialing in occupational health nursing. The final article will present the results of a national project conducted in 1996 asking AAOHN members for input in determining levels of competency in occupational health nursing practice.

Given the increasing quantity and impressive placement of work on Bayesian process tracing, this approach has quickly become a frontier of qualitative research methods. Moreover, it has dominated the process-tracing modules at the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) and the American Political Science Association (APSA) meetings for over five years, rendering its impact even greater. Proponents of qualitative Bayesianism make a series of strong claims about its contributions and scope of inferential validity. Four claims stand out: (1) it enables causal inference from iterative research, (2) the sequence in which we evaluate evidence is irrelevant to inference, (3) it enables scholars to fully engage rival explanations, and (4) it prevents ad hoc hypothesizing and confirmation bias. Notwithstanding the stakes of these claims and breadth of traction this method has received, no one has systematically evaluated the promises, trade-offs, and limitations that accompany Bayesian process tracing. This article evaluates the extent to which the method lives up to the mission. Despite offering a useful framework for conducting iterative research, the current state of the method introduces more bias than it corrects for on numerous dimensions. The article concludes with an examination of the opportunity costs of learning Bayesian process tracing and a set of recommendations about how to push the field forward.
