Cambial activity and ray cell abundance in Acer saccharum

The ratio of ray and ray cell initials to fusiform initials of the vascular cambium relative to radial growth rate as reflected in the secondary xylem was studied in stems of Acer saccharum Marsh. Ray initials increased in size as they aged, slowly when growth rate was low, rapidly when it was high, but there was little fluctuation in the number of rays per unit of tangential area; as the cambium increased in circumference, the older, larger rays diverged and new small rays arose in intervening areas, thus maintaining a uniform unit area population independent of growth rate. However, since ray size increased rapidly when growth rate was high, the unit area population of ray cells rose abruptly with accelerating growth rate: the relative volume of xylem ray tissue rose from 8.6 to 12.7% of the total xylem volume when annual ring width increased from 1 to 7 mm. When fast growth was not maintained, the unit area population of ray cells declined slowly as the large rays diverged.


In certain woods, whose rays have extensive uniseriate margins, an individual marginal cell may sometimes be modified, by the perforation of its side walls, to connect two vessel segments on opposite sides of the ray. This feature does not appear to have been previously described though it is by no means uncommon; it has been observed by the authors in woods of many widely separated families. It is limited to woods with particular types of ray and vessel structure, but its occurrence seems to be primarily determined by the manner in which the vessels develop. Large ray cells which appeared to have scalariform perforations in the side walls were first observed by the authors in the wood of Lacistema aggregatum (Berg). Rusby. (Lacistemaceæ); examination of macerated material, fig. 1, has shown that the side walls of these cells are exactly similar to the end walls of the vessel segments, and though it has not been possible to demonstrate the absence of a membrane, the authors are convinced from a careful study of the sections, that these walls are actually perforated, and that each forms a link between two vertical series of vessel segments. The course of the vessel is unusual; instead of continuing up and down between the rays, it periodically passes obliquely through a ray, and continues on the other side. The ray is usually uniseriate at the point at which it is crossed, and the ray cell involved becomes slightly swollen, rather in the manner of an oil or mucilage cell but without visible contents. The lateral walls are perforated, so that the cell resembles a very short vessel segment, and presumably functions as such. From the position and shape of these cells, however, it is clear that they have been derived from ray initials and not from fusiform initials. Attention was first drawn to this phenomenon by the presence of scalariform bars in the walls of cells which, from their shape, appeared at first sight to be oil or mucilage cells; simple perforations in such cells are obviously more easily overlooked, and it was not until a special search was made that they were found to be by no means uncommon, and to occur in woods of several different families.

Vascular cambium activity was examined in Arthropitys communis (Binney) Hirmer et Knoell, and A. deltoides Cichan et Taylor, anatomically preserved calamite stems from the Pennsylvanian of Kentucky. Developmental characteristics of the meristem were inferred from changes in the size and number of tracheids and ray cells determined from serial tangential sections of the secondary xylem. In A. communis, circumferential enlargement of the cambium seems to have been accommodated primarily by the enlargement of fusiform initials. Qualitative and quantitative evidence is also presented indicating that “marginal” interfascicular ray initials were converted to fusiform initials during the early stages of cambial activity. In A. deltoides, circumferential enlargement of the meristem was accommodated by the enlargement of fusiform initials and by an increase in size and number of interfascicular ray initials. Multiplicative division of the fascicular ray initials appears to have been an important feature of cambial activity in both species. There is no qualitative or quantitative evidence that the number of fusiform initials in either species was augmented by anticlinal division as in extant seed plants.

The interrelations between varied growth rates and those phases of cambial activity involved in determination of tracheid size and ray volume were investigated in Thuja occidentalis. Length of tracheids at the time of pseudotransverse division of the initiating cambial cells was determined from the peripheral wood of stems which fell within a similar range of size but differed in their rates of growth. The circumstances which favored accelerated growth, as shown in more frequent periclinal divisions in the cambium, encouraged earlier pseudotransverse division of fusiform initials and hence the production of shorter tracheids. Among trees of similar size decline in growth rate was accompanied by lengthening of cambial cells to a maximum associated with annual radial increments of 0.7 to 0.8 mm. Tracheid diameter was only slightly influenced by the rate of growth. Tangential width underwent minor increase in suppressed trees and radial diameter was slightly augmented in fast-growing trees. A positive correlation was revealed between ray volume and rate of growth.

Variability of anatomical characters within a 15 year old stem is presented by the method of contour lines, where against a schematic longitudinal section of a stem points corresponding to the same values for a character are joined by lines, similarly as altitudes in cartography. The method permits prediction of future trends in character changes. It was thus established that tracheid dimensions and diameter of bordered pits in early wood tracheids increase with age of tree and do not reach maximal values before the 15th year. The annual ring width and the height of the rays attain maximal values before the 15th year while the dimensions of ray cells and the percentage of late wood reach almost constant values during the first year or two.

The forests on the natural distribution area from the silvosteppe zone, under the influence of climate change will experience major changes in their structure and functioning. The analysis of growth parameters for Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus petraea, Q. robur in three experimental areas from center of the Republic of Moldova indicates that the radial growth processes are influenced by the same complex of climatic factors, which differ being dendroclimatic response intensity. It has been shown that between the annual tree growth and forest aridity index - FAI, there are close correlations: the higher FAI values indicate the lower annual growth of the trees, and vice versa, low FAI values identify good development conditions of the stands (higher increases in the annual ring width).

Two tropical tree species viz. Alstonia venenata Br. and Alstonia neriifolia Don. (Apocynaceae) were investigated to detect size variation in different elements of the cambium and its derivative tissues. Although these two species were grown under identical climatic and edaphic conditions, fusiform initial dimensions and the elements derived from them were larger in A. venenata than in A. neriifolia. Ray initials are rectangular in A. venenata but isodiametric in A. neriifolia. An appreciable increase in length was observed in the phloem and xylem ray cells when compared to the mother cells. Maximum elongation was observed in xylem fibers during differentiation from the respective fusiform initials.

Abstract Common horse-chestnut is frequently infested by the insect pest horse-chestnut leaf miner [HCLM; Cameraria ohridella (Deschka & Dimić, 1986), Gracillariidae, Lepidoptera]. The larvae, feeding on leaf parenchyma, cause browning and dehydration of leaves, which may be shed as early as in summer. The major aims of this study were: (1) to assess the effect of infestation by HCLM on ring-width dynamics in common horse-chestnut; (2) to determine the date of invasion of the pest; and (3) to compare the growth-climate response in the period before and after the invasion of HCLM. In 2017 in north-western Poland, samples from 30 horse-chestnut trees for the dendrochronological analysis were taken with help of a Pressler increment borer. The ring-width chronology was developed using standard dendrochronological methods. Dendroclimatological analyses were made in 2 periods: before the determined date of HCLM invasion (till the year 1999) and after the invasion (in 20002016). In 2000, in spite of favourable weather conditions, a reduced growth rate was observed in 91% of the analysed trees. The period of strong reductions lasted till 2010. Before the invasion, radial growth rate was dependent on temperature and precipitation in May and June of the current year, whereas after the invasion, the growth-climate response was dependent on temperature and precipitation in the preceding year and the correlation was stronger. Surprisingly, in recent years (2011–2016), in spite of infestation by HCLM every year, the health condition of the analysed trees has improved and tree-ring width has increased.

The paper considers the variation o f annual ring parameters and physical properties of wood of the pine species prevailing in Latvia’s forests, depending on the forest type (bog-land, vacciniosa) and the growth region in Latvia (Vidzeme, Latgale). Wood samples were taken from the stem butt-end, the middle and 3 A o f the height, in its sapwood or core part. An average annual ring width, latewood and earlywood width in the year ring, the percentage of latewood in the annual ring, wood density in oven-dry state (0), tangential swelling (tg) and radial swelling (rad) o f wood, as well as volume swelling (v) and swelling anisotropy coefficient (k) o f wood were determined for the samples. A comparison of these data shows that, in the majority of cases, the indices for the wood of pines grown in vacciniose have higher values, which suggests the advantage of pine wood over the bog-land pine wood. In its turn, no unambiguous distinctions between the parameter values for pine wood o f Latgale and Vidzeme origin were found, although the pine wood of Vidzeme origin had a somewhat higher indices. It may be concluded that the greatest impact on the leading pine wood properties is caused by the forest types regarded herewith, and not the belonging o f the pine wood site to its different growth regions in Latvia.

The balance between allocating energy resources to reproduction or growth has considerable theoretical interest. Conflicting ecological requirements and evolutionary pressures often necessitate a trade-off in energy allocation. We obtained measurements on seed-cone production and annual ring width of 365 Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) trees from 29 open-pollinated families for 8 years. Phenotypic, genetic, and environmental correlations were computed for seed-cone production and ring width for each year. Five of the eight environmental correlations were negative (range −0.077 to −0.305), reflecting the reality of the trade-off in physiological terms. Six of the eight genetic correlations were negative (range −0.199 to −0.776), indicating that a trade-off exists at the genetic level between energy allocation to reproduction and to somatic growth. These findings agree with the current theory of life-history evolution. Key words: Pseudotsuga menziesii, cone production, annual ring width, genetic correlation.

Interaksi polar dapat dinyatakan secara berasingan sebagai tekanan penghidratan, interaksi hidrofobik dan intekrasi asid-bes. Jumlah tenaga lebihan bebas Gibb per unit luas (ΔG) bagi satu saput nipis pada satu lapisan bergantung kepada ketebalan saput, dan angkali penyebaran apolar dan polar untuk sistem tersebut. Saput dimodelkan sebagai cecair Newtonian 2-dimensi dengan ketumpatan tetap, ρ, dan kelikatan, μ, mengalir di atas satu permukaan mengufuk. Ketebalan purata saput cecair, h0, dianggapkan cukup nipis supaya kesan graviti boleh diabaikan dan melambung atas oleh gas pasif dan menyambung secara lateral hingga infiniti (Model dua-dimensi). Daya badan yang disebut dalam persamaan Navier-Stokes adalah diubahsuaikan oleh kandungan interaksi antara molekul lebihan (daya apolar dan polar) antara saput bendalir dan permukaan pepejal bergantung kepada daya-daya apolar dan polar. Persamaan Navier-Stokes telah diubahsuai dengan keadaan sempadan berkaitan diselesaikan bawah kaedah pendekatan gelombong panjang untuk memperolehi persamaan perkembangan tak-linear bagi saput antara permukaan. Daya apolar dan polar telah didapati memainkan peranan pencirian atas saput nipis dan kesan utama pada sifat tenaga lebihan bebas, kadar penubuhan, kadar penubuhan maksimum, gelombong neutral, nombor gelombang yang dominan, jarak gelombong dominan dan masa memecah. Oleh demikian, teori linear adalah kurang sesuai untuk menyatakan kestabilan pencirian selaput. Kata kunci: Daya apolar, daya polar, kestabilan linear, kadar pertumbuhan, masa memecah The total excess free energy per unit area (ΔG) of a pure, uncharged thin film on a support is solely derived from the apolar (Lifshitz - van der Waals) and polar (acid-base) intermolecular interactions. Polar interactions are variously described as the hydration pressure, hydrophobic interaction and acid base interaction. The total free excess energy (per unit area) of a thin film on a substrate depends on the film thickness, and the apolar and polar spreading coefficients for the system. The film is modelled as a two-dimensional Newtonian liquid of constant density, ρ and viscosity, μ, flowing on a horizontal plane. The liquid film of mean thickness, h0, is assumed to be thin enough to neglect the gravity effect and bounded above by a passive gas and laterally extends to infinity (two-dimensional model). The body force term in the Navier-Stokes equation is modified by the inclusion of excess intermolecular interactions (apolar and polar forces) between fluid film and the solid surface owing to apolar and polar forces. The modified Navier-Stokes equation with associated boundary conditions is solved under long wave approximation method to obtain a nonlinear equation of evolution of the film interface. The apolar and polar forces were found to play the dominant role in characteristic of thin films and the main effect on the behavior of the excess free energy, growth rate, maximum growth rate, neutral wave, dominant wavenumber, dominant wavelength and rupture time.
