Effects of the Insecticide Sevin on Various Stages of the Dungeness Crab, Cancer magister

Of the life-history stages of the Dungeness crab, Cancer magister, the early larvae are more sensitive to Sevin than are juveniles and adults. A concentration of 1.0 mg/liter did not affect egg hatching but prevented molting of all prezoeae to zoeae. The concentration that killed 50% of the first stage zoeae during a 96-hr exposure (96-hr EC50 for death) was estimated to be 0.01 mg/liter. Few zoeae were killed in 24 hr by 82.0 mg/liter, but the 24-hr EC50 for death within 15 days after the exposure was estimated to be 0.015 mg/liter. The 24-hr EC50 for cessation of swimming, which was not always permanent, was 0.0065 mg/liter. Survival of zoeae after 25 days exposure to concentrations of 0.0001, 0.00032, 0.001, 0.0032, and 0.01 mg/liter were 83, 60, 69, 21, and 0%, respectively, and control survival was 79%. Molting was delayed at a concentration as low as 0.0001 mg/liter.Young juvenile crabs are more sensitive to Sevin than are older juveniles or adults. The 24-hr EC50's for death or irreversible paralysis were estimated to be 0.076 and 0.35 to 0.62 mg/liter for second and ninth stage juveniles, respectively. The behavior, growth, and survival of juvenile crabs were not affected when the animals were exposed to 0.032 mg/liter of Sevin for 24 hr and then held in clean sea water for 44 days. The 24-hr and 96-hr EC50's for death or irreversible paralysis were 0.49 and 0.26 mg/liter, respectively, for adult crabs. After eating cockle clams that had just been exposed for 24 hr to 1.0, 3.2, and 10.0 mg/liter of Sevin, 22, 77, and 100% of adult crabs, respectively, were irreversibly paralyzed within 6 hr. The significance of these findings in field application of Sevin to control oyster pests and predators is discussed.

This study describes the close association of epibiotic microbial fouling on the eggs of Cancer magister and egg mortalities. Laboratory experiments showed that nutrient enriched sea water increased the number of measurable filaments on the egg surface and increased the number of egg mortalities. Chemotherapeutic treatment of the sea water decreased the number of filaments and mortalities. The use of antibiotics decreased the number of mortalities while the number of filaments steadily increased, suggesting that antibiotic-sensitive, nonfilamentous forms may be substantially responsible for mortalities caused by microbial fouling. Darkness and ultraviolet irradiation of the sea water had no significant effects on filaments or egg mortalities. Both filamentous fouling and egg mortalities described exponential declines with increased depths into the egg masses.

This study shows that larvae of the Dungeness crab (Cancer magister Dana) reared in the laboratory are susceptible to epibiotic microbial infestation similar to that described for eggs of the same species. Larval survival in the laboratory was increased by increased additions of antibiotics to the sea water; however, the chemotherapeutic agent, malachite green, was unsuccessful due to its toxicity to the sensitive larval stages. The addition of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum was beneficial to larval survival in the light but detrimental in dark conditions, supporting the suggestion of a photosynthetic excretion from the algae capable of antibiotic activity. Chronic antibiotic treatment was observed to reduce the size of the larvae. Demonstration of larval susceptibility to epibiotic microbial infestation in the laboratory coupled with its occurrence on egg stages in nature provides reasonable evidence that the disease can occur on larval stages in nature.

In order to improve the information management of the modern digital agriculture, combined several modern digital agriculture technologies, namely wireless sensor network (WSN), global positioning system (GPS), geographic information system (GIS) and general packet radio service (GPRS), and applied them to the information collection and intelligent control process of the modern digital agriculture. Combining the advantage of the local multi-channel information collection and the low-power wireless transmission of WSN, the stable and low cost long-distance communication and data transmission ability of GPRS, the high-precision positioning technology of the DGPS positioning and the large-scale field information layer-management technology of GIS, such a hybrid technology combination is applied to the large-scale field information and intelligent management. In this study, wireless sensor network routing nodes are disposed in the sub-area of field. These nodes have GPS receiver modules and the electric control mechanism, and are relative positioned by GPS. They can real-time monitor the field information and control the equipment for the field application. When the GPS position information and other collected field information are measured, the information can be remotely transmitted to PC by GPRS. Then PC can upload the information to the GIS management software. All the field information can be classified into different layers in GIS and shown on the GIS map based on their GPS position. Moreover, we have developed remote control software based on GIS. It can send the control commands through GPRS to the nodes which have control modules; and then we can real-time manage and control the field application. In conclusion, the unattended automatic wireless intelligent technology for the field information collection and control can effectively utilize hardware resources, improve the field information intelligent management and reduce the information and intelligent cost.

Subsoiling has been acknowledged worldwide to break compacted hardpan, improve soil permeability and water storage capacity, and promote topsoil deepening and root growth. However, there exist certain factors which limit the wide in-field application of subsoiling machines. Of these factors, the main two are poor subsoiling quality and high energy consumption, especially the undesired tillage depth obtained in the field with cover crops. Based on the analysis of global adoption and benefits of subsoiling technology, and application status of subsoiling machines, this article reviewed the research methods, technical characteristics, and developing trends in five key aspects, including subsoiling shovel design, anti-drag technologies, technologies of tillage depth detection and control, and research on soil mechanical interaction. Combined with the research progress and application requirements of subsoiling machines across the globe, current problems and technical difficulties were analyzed and summarized. Aiming to solve these problems, improve subsoiling quality, and reduce energy consumption, this article proposed future directions for the development of subsoiling machines, including optimizing the soil model in computer simulation, strengthening research on the subsoiling mechanism and comprehensive effect, developing new tillage depth monitoring and control systems, and improving wear-resisting properties of subsoiling shovels.

Abstract Background Wolbachia is an obligate intracellular maternally transmitted, gram-negative bacterium which forms a spectrum of endosymbiotic relationships from parasitism to obligatory mutualism in a wide range of arthropods and onchocercid nematodes, respectively. In arthropods Wolbachia produces reproductive manipulations such as male killing, feminization, parthenogenesis and cytoplasmic incompatibility for its propagation and provides an additional fitness benefit for the host to protect against pathogens, whilst in onchocercid nematodes, apart from the mutual metabolic dependence, this bacterium is involved in moulting, embryogenesis, growth and survival of the host. Methods This review details the molecular data of Wolbachia and its effect on host biology, immunity, ecology and evolution, reproduction, endosymbiont-based treatment and control strategies exploited for filariasis. Relevant peer-reviewed scientic papers available in various authenticated scientific data bases were considered while writing the review. Conclusions The information presented provides an overview on Wolbachia biology and its use in the control and/or treatment of vectors, onchocercid nematodes and viral diseases of medical and veterinary importance. This offers the development of new approaches for the control of a variety of vector-borne diseases. Graphic Abstract

To counter disease problems caused by vibriosis in shrimp hatchery, this recent study used three different probiotics to be tested on tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) postlarvae. The study arranged four treatments as follows: A: a combination of three liquid-form probiotics Brevibacillus laterosporus BT951, Bacillus subtilis BM12, and B. licheniformis BM58; B: a combination of three powder-form probiotics Brevibacillus laterosporus BT951, Bacillus subtilis BM12, and B. licheniformis BM58; C: a commercial powder probiotic containing Bacillus subtilis; and D: control (without probiotic), each treatment with three replications. This study was set up in a completely randomized design experiment using twelve fiberglass tanks filled with 750 L sterile sea water and stocked with 30,000 nauplii in the Awarange shrimp hatchery of the Research Institute for Brackishwater Aquaculture and Fisheries Extension Installation in Barru. Variables observed in this study were the survival rate of the shrimp postlarvae at the end of the experiment, total vibrio count (TBV) and total plate count of common bacteria (TPC) in the culture water. The results showed that the survival rate of tiger shrimp applied either in liquid (A: 61.5±4.7%) or powder form (B: 48.6±6.8%), and control (without probiotic) (D: 51.2±4.4%) were not significantly different (P>0.05). However, survival rates in these three treatments differed (P<0.05) with that of the commercial probiotic (C: 21.7±9.9%). TBV/TPC ratio in the tank waters treated with the commercial probiotic (2.26-37.52%) was much higher than that of the liquid form probiotic (0.86-1.98%), powder form probiotic (1.25-8.37%), and control (1.93-2.84%). Ammonia-nitrogen in treatment C (1.462-2.989 mg/L) was relatively higher than that of in treatment A (1.595-2.435 mg/L), treatment B (1.644-2.115 mg/L), and treatment D (1.051-1.858 mg/L).

ABSTRACT Feed management is a critical factor in the nursery activities because food serves as an energy for growth and survival rates. The study aimed to determine the best feeding to improve growth and survival rates. Cultured of coral trout grouper seeds were used for this research in 9 fiber tubs each of  0.8 tonnes of sea water volume with 3 treatments and 3 replicates. The feeding treatments were (a) commercial feeding pelle; (b) trash fish; and (c) feeding combinations (50% pellets and 50% trash fish). The initial length of coral trout grouper seeds were 3 cm long. The pellet used was a commercial pellet with dose of 5-10% biomass, while the trash fish was clupeid fish. Feeding times were twice a daya at 08:00 and 16:00 local time. A complete random design was used as an experiment design. Data was analysed using ANOVA and descriptive statistics. Water qualities during larva rearing included water temperature, pH, salinity, DO, ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate. The results showed that growth dan survical rates was significantly affected by combination feeding method (50% pellet and 50% trash fish) with growth rate of 0.08% cm/day and survival rate of 60.20±2.34%.
