Information derived from Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus harengus) released with abdominally inserted magnetic tags and recovered by an electronic tag-detection system indicated that sustained mortality due to internal damage caused by the tag or the incision wound was probably minimal. In addition, tags that have not become attached to the body wall and internal organs prior to spawning will to a large degree be extruded with the gonadal products during spawning. Key words: tagging, wounding, mortality
