The COVID-19 pandemic has been the single deadliest acute public health crisis in American history, and these deaths are a salient threat to the functioning of family and social networks. We assess counts and rates of parental and other in-home caregiver loss using death data published by the CDC and household composition data available through the American Community Survey's Public Use Microdata Sample. We find that, through mid-November 2021, more than 167,000 children under the age of 18 lost a parent or other in-home caregiver to COVID-19. Most of these children are under the age of 13 and, though this experience is universal across racial and ethnic groups, ages, and states, racial and ethnic disparities in caregiver loss exceed already high disparities in COVID-19 deaths. We summarize literature on the impacts of parental loss and, after reviewing potential interventions for these children, offer recommendations to policymakers and practitioners.

Abstract This paper includes a comprehensive literature review of sludge composition data from wastewater treatment plants. 722 data sets from 249 sources were used to establish typical ratios between COD and solids-based parameters and to verify rule-of-thumb values, respectively. Confirmation of these typical ratios can also be accomplished by using biochemical composition data. It is shown that a correlation between data from proteins, lipids and carbohydrates analysis can be related to COD/VSS ratios. Finally, using the findings from the literature review, the organic and inorganic conversion factors of COD fractions in activated sludge models are adjusted to solids-based parameters. It was shown that with the adjustments of the factors and a partition of the particulate inert fraction into a fraction assigned to the influent and a fraction assigned to the endogenous products, a better agreement with the ratios of COD/VSS in the individual sludge streams can be established.

Background The provision and over-consumption of foods high in energy, saturated fat, free sugars or salt are important risk factors for poor diet and ill-health. In the UK, policies seek to drive improvement through voluntary reformulation of single nutrients in key food groups. There has been little consideration of the overall progress by individual companies. This study assesses recent changes in the nutrient profile of brands and products sold by the top 10 food and beverage companies in the UK. Methods The FSA/Ofcom nutrient profile model was applied to the nutrient composition data for all products manufactured by the top 10 food and beverage companies and weighted by volume sales. The mean nutrient profiling score, on a scale of 1–100 with thresholds for healthy products being 62 for foods and 68 for drinks, was used to rank companies and food categories between 2015 and 2018, and to calculate the proportion of individual products and sales that are considered by the UK Government to be healthy. Results Between 2015 and 2018 there was little change in the sales-weighted nutrient profiling score of the top 10 companies (49 to 51; p = 0.28) or the proportion of products classified as healthy (46% to 48%; p = 0.23). Of the top five brands sold by each of the ten companies, only six brands among ten companies improved their nutrient profiling score by 20% or more. The proportion of total volume sales classified as healthy increased from 44% to 51% (p = 0.07) driven by an increase in the volume sales of bottled water, low/no calorie carbonates and juices, but after removing soft drinks, the proportion of foods classified as healthy decreased from 7% to 6% (p = 33). Conclusions The UK voluntary reformulation policies, setting targets for reductions in calories, sugar and salt, do not appear to have led to significant changes in the nutritional quality of foods, though there has been progress in soft drinks where the soft drink industry levy also applies. Further policy action is needed to incentivise companies to make more substantive changes in product composition to support consumers to achieve a healthier diet.

The goal of this work was to evaluate changes in dietary fiber measured by the traditional enzymatic-gravimetric method (AOAC 991.43) and the more recently accepted modified enzymatic-gravimetric method (AOAC 2011.25), mono- and disaccharides, and starch as a function of assessed ripeness in a controlled study of a single lot of bananas and in bananas at the same assessed stages of ripeness from bananas purchased in retail stores, from different suppliers. Sugars, starch, and dietary fiber were analyzed in bananas from a single lot, at different stages of ripeness, and in retail samples at the same assessed stages of ripeness. Mean fiber measured by the traditional enzymatic-gravimetric method (EG) was ~2 g/100g and not affected by ripeness. Mean fiber assessed with the recently modified method (mEG) was ~18 g/100g in unripe fruit and decreased to 4–5 g/100g in ripe and ~2 g/100g in overripe bananas. Slightly ripe and ripe bananas differed by ~1.1 g/100g in the controlled single-lot study but not among retail samples. There was a large increase in fructose, glucose and total sugar going from unripe to ripe with no differences between ripe and overripe. Aside from stage of ripeness, the carbohydrate composition in retail bananas is likely affected by differences in cultivar and post-harvest handling. Results from this study demonstrate the importance of measuring dietary fiber using the mEG approach, developing more comprehensive and sensitive carbohydrate analytical protocols and food composition data, and recognizing the impact of different stages of maturity and ripeness on carbohydrate intake estimated from food composition data.

The direct derivation (DD) method is a technique for quantitative phase analysis (QPA). It can be characterized by the use of the total sums of scattered/diffracted intensities from individual components as the observed data. The crystal structure parameters are required when we calculate the intensities of reflections or diffraction patterns. Intensity can, however, be calculated only with the chemical composition data if it is not of individual reflections but of a total sum of diffracted/scattered intensities for that material. Furthermore, it can be given in a form of the scattered intensity per unit weight. Therefore, we can calculate the weight proportion of a component material by dividing the total sum of observed scattered/diffracted intensities by the scattered intensity per unit weight. The chemical composition data of samples under investigation are known in almost all cases at the stage of QPA. Thus, a technical problem is how to separate the observed diffraction pattern of a mixture into individual component patterns. Various pattern decomposition techniques currently available can be used for separating the pattern of a mixture. In this report, the theoretical background of the DD method and various techniques for pattern decompositions are reviewed along with the examples of applications.
