In situ ATR-SEIRAS study of adsorption and phase formation of trimesic acid on Au(111-25 nm) film electrodes

The adsorption and phase formation of 3 mmol L–1 trimesic acid (TMA) on Au(111-25 nm) film electrodes in contact with aq. 0.1 mol L–1 HClO4 electrolyte have been investigated by in situ ATR-SEIRAS, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and STM measurements. Depending on the applied electrode potential, TMA molecules assemble in three distinctly different 2D ordered adlayers. In the range 0.10 < E < 0.50 V, planar-oriented molecules form an open ring honeycomb pattern (phase I) stabilized by directional hydrogen bonds. Interfacial water molecules are being replaced. A close-packed, physisorbed adlayer II forms at higher potentials in the range 0.58 < E < 0.75 V. Further increase of the electrode potential causes an orientation change. An initially disordered phase transforms into an ordered, stripe-like chemisorbed adlayer III of perpendicularly oriented TMA molecules (0.90 < E < 1.20 V). One carboxylate group per molecule is bound to the electrode surface, while the two other protonated carboxyl groups are directed toward the electrolyte, and act as structure-determining components of a hydrogen-bonded molecular ladder network. Strongly hydrogen-bonded and isolated water species are co-adsorbed. The potential-induced formation of chemisorbed TMA proceeds in two steps: (i) orientation change from planar to a disordered tilted and (or) perpendicular phase IIIa (τ < 5 ms) according to a Langmuir-type kinetics; (ii) subsequently, the chemisorbed TMA molecules align into a highly ordered, stripe-like phase IIIb with co-adsorbed water species. Purpose The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer conducted a randomized trial investigating the role of radiotherapy (RT) after local excision (LE) of ductal carcinoma-in-situ (DCIS) of the breast. We analyzed the efficacy of RT with 10 years follow-up on both the overall risk of local recurrence (LR) and related to clinical, histologic, and treatment factors. Patients and Methods After complete LE, women with DCIS were randomly assigned to no further treatment or RT (50 Gy). One thousand ten women with mostly (71%) mammographically detected DCIS were included. The median follow-up was 10.5 years. Results The 10-year LR-free rate was 74% in the group treated with LE alone compared with 85% in the women treated by LE plus RT (log-rank P < .0001; hazard ratio [HR] = 0.53). The risk of DCIS and invasive LR was reduced by 48% (P = .0011) and 42% (P = .0065) respectively. Both groups had similar low risks of metastases and death. At multivariate analysis, factors significantly associated with an increased LR risk were young age (≤ 40 years; HR = 1.89), symptomatic detection (HR = 1.55), intermediately or poorly differentiated DCIS (as opposed to well-differentiated DCIS; HR = 1.85 and HR = 1.61 respectively), cribriform or solid growth pattern (as opposed to clinging/micropapillary subtypes; HR = 2.39 and HR = 2.25 respectively), doubtful margins (HR = 1.84), and treatment by LE alone (HR = 1.82). The effect of RT was homogeneous across all assessed risk factors. Conclusion With long-term follow-up, RT after LE for DCIS continued to reduce the risk of LR, with a 47% reduction at 10 years. All patient subgroups benefited from RT.

Mg-4Nd base alloys with Zn additions of 3, 5 and 8 wt % were investigated with in situ synchrotron radiation diffraction during solidification. This method enabled the investigation of phase formation and transformation in the alloys. The diffraction results were supported with TEM observations on the as-solidified samples. The results show the effect of increased Zn addition on stabilizing the Mg3RE phase (RE—rare earth). The experimental results agree only partially with the theoretical calculations indicating the need to improve the existing thermodynamic database on the alloy system.
